Carly you really have nasty bug there. Continue to take it easy.

Tara, what a sweetheart. As you say it was meant to be, you're the perfect match for Indy.

Seabreezes aI stick to LC now, I find it works so well with JUDDD. And good old JUDDD doesn't mind what eating plan you choose.

Thank you Ms Latte! I agree with you, Kissa. Low carb and JUDDD work so well together. This time around (5 years ago I lost 40lbs doing JUDDD and "whatever" up days) LC is my game. Of course I gained it all back and then some and started doing a strict "primal-like" lifestyle, and counting calories. I've lost 53lbs but have stalled for several months. Hoping the JUDDD will kickstart me back into weight loss while using all the great tools I've gained in the last year or so.

I just tried to get on the up day down day site to check my numbers again since I plan on being strict with my up day numbers and it has been suspended. I was wondering if any one knows how to figure the numbers without the calculator? I have never read the book(which I probably should), but I was wondering if he gives a formula to figure you calories.

Try googling Johnson Up Day Down Day Calculator.
Click on the link and Scroll down on the page and you should see the calculator.
I don't know why they changed how to locate it but others
have had this issue too.

AAAHHHH Tara Indy is adorable!!!! So so glad you decided to adopt a new member of your family!

Carly- hang in there! Lots of people around me are fighting off the same or similar- its a nasty bug that just won't let go. Hope you can stay home from work to recover.

Slow, funny you mentioned the BochaSweet as I just bought some. Although I Used to be a regular with artificial sweeteners in my former LC days, I have since wanted to give up the artificial stuff and so lost my taste for it. The BochaSweet intrigued me though and I ordered a very expensive pouch of it.I have only just tasted it by dipping in a finger but yeah wow it tastes just like sugar! with a bit of cooling to it. I'm trying very hard to change my taste buds to not want so much sweet so I haven't used a lot of it but I want to try baking something with it soon... now that I brought it up I will try some in coffee or yogurt just to give it a go.

The weather has changed from frigid negative numbers to nearly 50 degrees F!!! it feels so warm to my cold adapted self that on my walk this morning with DP I actually was down to just a t-shirt by the end of it. Unbelievable. of course the melting foot of snow will be accompanied by lots of rain so everyone is now worried about flooding. yay.

Have a great day all!

Yes sure looks like it. That link I posted didn't work...well, the link worked but the calculator didn't. dang.
Actually it looks like Dr Johnson has disappeared from the internet. Wonder what he's up to.

I remember my numbers though. And I think I'm going to mix things up now and do a JUDDD style fast. 300 cal on DD, 1500 cal on UD. I can have up to 1800 on UD so some days I might go with that.

I've been doing mostly OMAD for months now and just feel like a change, mostly from boredom I guess.

I'm finally feeling back to my self. My stamina is still a bit low, but otherwise pretty good. This flu has been knocking people down big time.

Right now it is 58 degrees in NYC which is crazy, since less than a week ago it was in the single digits and after the next day or so of rain it's headed back down to those numbers. The low for Saturday and Sunday is supposed to be 10 degrees.

I think it really might be the end of Dr. Johnson's run with JUDDD. However, he came out with the second edition not that long ago, so who knows

It's probably pretty safe to use your TDEE (or a bit lower) for UD and then just take the percentage you want for DDs. TDEE will take into account your activity, so probably safer to underestimate if you are not really sure or not really consistent.

I have recreated the calculator in Excel, based on information from the book.

I can't seem to upload it here - any advice?

Hi lovely ladies - seems I can't because it's in Excel. If you are happy to pm me your email address, I can share it with you (again, hope that is okay Admin!!)

If you ever had the book, how you work it out is there. I'll put the sums here and in a separate thread!

Determining your RMR from the book (Chapter 6)

The Harris-Benedict Equation:

RMR for Men: = 66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) – (6.8 x age)
RMR for Women: = 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age)

Eg Man who weights 150lbs and is 6ft tall.
66 + (6.23 x 150) + (12.7 x 72) – (6.8 x 30)
66 + 934.50 + 914.40 – 204 = 1710.90

A woman who is 30 and weights 125lbs and is 5’6” tall.
655 + (4.35 x 125) + (4.7 x 66) – (4.7 x 30)
655 + 543.75 + 310.20 – 141 = 1367.95

From here you add in your ‘activity’ level – although it seems the best results are achieved if you just stay at level one.

However, for those training for a marathon….

(the recommendation is that you go one level below the level that you think you are at – why eat back the calories you’ve burned?)

Sedentary (little or no exercise, you work at a desk job) RMR x 1.2
Lightly active (light exercise or sports 1 to 3 days a week) RMR x 1.375
Moderately active (moderate exercise or sports 3 to 5 days a week) RMR x 1.55
Very active (hard exercise or sports 6 to 7 days a week) RMR x 1.725
Extra active (hard exercise or sports daily, working at a physical job, or training for a marathon or other competitive sport twice a day) RMR x 1.9

There is a margin of error of 20% here, as no two individuals are the same – and this is a lot when we’re talking about your RMR, however, by the time we work out 20% of your RMR it may be 100 calories or less – so the average (and upto 500 or 800!) will be fine.

So remember on a DD = (RMR + Activity Level adjustment) x 20% = your approximate calorie intake; on an UD though – eat to satiety, not to your RMR!

Weight loss mode is anything upto 45% of your RMR + Activity Level.

Hope this works.

I'm leading some other people on a FB page through ADF - and they're all having success. We all eat low carb.

Now for me. I see the last time I posted here I weighed 178lbs. Today I weight 186. Even though I was eating to my plan (low carb and IF) suddenly in November I jumped up from about 183 (after visitors for 3 weeks) to 195+, I think I went up to 198 (but ignored that number determinedly). It was stress, too much partying and too much vino! In the end, I relaxed decided I'd get through Christmas and New Year and had intended to do another round of the 8 Week Blood Sugar diet, which started my successful weight loss journey (at one point I had lost 88lbs! Currently at 77lbs - 10lbs gone this year) but I was asked to lead a group in ADF and I am loving it. Dieting half the time - can't be bad!!!

I've had a look at a couple of posts and need to come here more for your great advice and knowledge!

Here's to a fantastic 2018. I have announced my goals as 50 by the time I'm 50 (August), and am already 20% of the way there!

Thank you, Vicky! I'm curious about the order-of-magnitude difference in the the 66 for men and 655 for women. (And what do you call that type of number, anyway? Y'know, the number that makes the formula work?)

Terrific news! Keep us posted on this, too, as time passes. I'm curious to see comparisons (my A1C also dropped like a rock in to the mid-5's very quickly. It's 5.3 now [yay!] and of course I want it to be 4.9 ).

Mine had gotten as high as 8 something and I was diagnosed diabetic, then with meds and some diet changes got it to the mid 6s, adding JUDDD and IF and now here. According to the interwebs, doesn't meet pre-diabetic anymore- gonna keep doing what I'm doing!

Woot! We travel in a similar boat. Mine topped out at 7.6 or so, with a diagnosis of "diabetes" rather than "pre-diabetes". I didn't have any symptoms, so my doc never got me on drugs, but promised to if I didn't lower my BF%. The rest is history.

Here's a tip: Like you, I am also no longer either diabetic or even pre-diabetic. But it turns out that both medical and insurance types have another class that I call "once a diabetic". Because of this, I get alerts to have my eyes examined for diabetes-related diseases and various other tests. Which is fine, but it surprised me the first time it happened.

Thanks Alcestis. Feeling great. Loving picking up U.S. Size 10s and 12s!

P0rtia, no idea about numbers but thems the ones from the book.

Congrats ladies on your hba1c numbers. DH doesn't IF or LC really, but has been making an effort to cut back and numbers down to 5.4 and off his cholesterol tablets. Still on metformin but I hope not for long.

Slow can't wait to see herself!

Had a great UD today and still heading to bed lighter than I've been at night since sometime in October. Busy day tomorrow, always good on an DD.

Odd thing, I’ve suddenly began showing weight loss after my UD. Never have regularly before, there was always those one off days. Plus, I am up a lb or so after DD. So weird. Lost about 13 lbs since end of November. Very close to hitting new decade.
I work freelance and often from home, and sometimes not at all, but this week I am working for a friend in an office. Fasting is sooooooooo much easier when you aren’t at home. I couldn’t believe how easily I fasted yesterday.
