The Great Potato Hack-Come & Join In! Week of Feb. 29

There's a few of us who are going to do the potato hack for a few days next week, feel free to join in-the more the merrier!

A brief overview of the hack:

-you eat potatoes. Lots and lots of potatoes
-then you eat even more potatoes
-you can cook them however you want, but the idea is to eat them as plain as possible. No butter, bacon, sour cream etc. It's especially important to limit fat to zero or as close to zero as possible (there's a sciency reason for this, but it's way over my head lol).

-you can use seasonings and condiments sparingly. I usually stick to ketchup.
-drink lots of water!!
-I've found a hack for the hack and buy bags of frozen hash brown/O'Brien style potatoes. The O'Brien ones come with diced onions/green peppers but the small amount hasn't caused any stalls when I use them. Just make sure you're not buying bagged potatoes like french fries, which have fat added (your bag should show 0 for fat)
-you can also use fresh potatoes (yellows, reds, russets etc). Sweet potatoes are a gray area but I haven't had luck with them (low satiety level for me).

-eat potatoes until full, which is somewhere between 2-5lbs a day
-timing of eating is irrelevant (I prefer to do three meals at 10/2/5)
-the goal is to only eat potatoes, but I do have one cup of diet hot cocoa a day during the hack (25 calories), with no issues. Again-keep the fat to a minimum, but if you need a little sugar in your coffee you should be fine
-it's best to do minimal exercise during the hack (walking is fine)

-besides weight loss the hack is supposed to be really good for gut health (again more sciencey stuff ), helps reset taste-buds and calms down cravings, and then a bunch of other health benefits that may or may not be true (there's an actual potato hack book being written right now, that I had the privilege of proof-reading, and the potato is really quite amazing!). It's also a great way to get over a weight loss slump, correct maintenance creep and to just shake things up and get you out of a rut!

The plan is to start next Monday, the 29th and then go for as long as you want (I'm planning on Monday-Wednesday for sure, with Thursday as a possible). Join in for one day or the whole week! On Monday we'll check in here to this post with our starting weigh-ins

The non-fat HNH or non-fat creamers are ok. I don't like the ingredients on the whole but for PH days they are fine.

The Spud Fit guy-he's doing the potato hack for the entire year (or until he hits his goal weight, whichever comes first). So far he's done really well on it and there's a lot of us following his progress with interest

I think you'll be fine, as long as you're not making bulletproof coffee with a stick of butter

Oh man! I am really tempted to try this, but also nervous! *bites nails* No sour cream or butter? But I keep hearing good things from several people here and I know I could definitely use some of the possible benefits like calmed cravings (I have to believe that's true since the less I eat sugar, the less I want it).

ETA: Question. Would trying this only on [what would otherwise be] DDs be beneficial? I like to stick to my MWF schedule but is part of the benefit that you're doing it several days in a row?

Will you be using the heating/cooling/reheating method to help with the Resistant Starch?

Watching this with interest.

32 ounces of plain potatoes has 880 calories, about 180 net carbs abd 24 grams of protein. FYI

Potatoes can be dry so you probably have to keep water handy.

The book I just finished proofreading talks about doing potato DDs, I think it's definitely something worth trying I think you could get away with not going so low on the calories though, since for some reason calories during the potato hack don't seem to really matter It's the only time for me that CICO doesn't work (I shouldn't have lost as much as I did on the hacks, for the amount of calories I ate in potatoes).

I've never done the heating/cooling thing (the hack thread over at another forum has talked about this quite a bit, but I've had good success without needing to do it).

I average about 1,000 calories a day, or slightly under, on my potato hack days

Ketchup will be your friend Salsa is good too (0 fat), I've also used hot sauce. You could probably get away with those fake butter sprays as well (I Can't Believe It's Not Butter tastes pretty good), but I've never tried it with the hack.

I drink a LOT of water during the hacks-it helps with the potty issues that can occur from eating so many potatoes The first time I did the hack I didn't drink hardly any water and I had some major stoppage issues lol. Water definitely helps with that!

From personal experience, I found that potato hacks REALLY changed my cravings and also my carb sensitivity. I always did the cook/cool thing with mine and did mostly boiled or baked spuds without reheating. I also used malt vinegar and Bolthouse dressings sparingly in place of butter/sour cream. (Cold potatoes, one green onion, a tablespoon of Bolthouse ranch and voila! Potato salad!) I tested my BG for the days that I did the PH and saw a decreasing BG spike the longer I did it and a reduction in fasting BG so that part is absolutely true. I was also always in ketosis (believe it or not) after the second day of hacking. I have had lasting effects from the PH, some of which are a bit strange. I lost almost a full shoe size among other weird things...

I would warn anyone who is extremely carb sensitive (as I am) to be careful.

I tried this a couple of years ago, and it was a disaster for me. Once I began eating the potatoes (and I cooled, etc. to get resistant starch), I was ravenous. I did it for 5 days (I love potatoes), and although I was careful about calories, I GAINED weight. I also felt awful and couldn't wait to return to my low carb eating.

I suspect that unless you tolerate carbs better than I do, this won't work for you.

I'm a bit concerned, but I've been able to get up to 100g of carbs without a gain as long as it's not Sugar....I'm thinking of trying the hack for at least 3 days IF I lose control over my vacay, but if the scale jumps too much while doing it....I'm bailing....LOL!

UPDATE AND ANSWER TO QUESTION:

I did a one-day hack yesterday. It was the first time I had tried it in years. Last time I lost 3.2 lbs. in one day. Yesterday's hack only yielded a 1 lb. drop and I was starving the entire day (although I have in my notes from years back that I was also starving the last time I did it). I would like to try the longer hack next week but I'd have to find a different way to prepare them. I was gagging by my 2nd potato (I ate all of them cold with a little sea salt and balsamic vinegar). I have to admit though that my pulse was very stable after every "meal". I usually have a rapid heart rate after eating but yesterday I never had a spike which was awesome!

I've done this several times and it really works. Its so boring and the desire to eat potatoes this way leaves quickly but weight will drop. I'm going to consider doing it. Ff broth, 1T low fat cheese sauce mixed into reheated potatoes with s&p are tasty and warming. I was cold on this hack.

Wow, how timely! I just started the potato hack today. Not sure how long I'll be doing it, but today was scheduled to be a DD and I felt more energetic and less hungry than usual, so I'm going to continue tomorrow and take it from there.

I lost quite a lot on Stillman -- from size 12 to size 2 -- but I stalled and switched to JUDDD. I've been maintaining nicely on JUDDD, but in the several months I've been on it, I've lost almost nothing more. Hoping the PH will kickstart the ol' metabolism and get weight loss going again.

I cannot imagine eating a cold potato, I just can't go there I mostly do the bagged diced potatoes (with onions/peppers added). Spray a cookie sheet with Pam, at 430' for about 20 minutes, occasionally stirring. Then I season with Lawry's seasoning salt and drizzle ketchup on top. It actually tastes pretty good, like you get breakfast potatoes at a diner And I eat till satiety/never feel hungry on hack days-maybe you could try eating more potatoes?

I've done the hack a few times now, duration 1-4 days, loss anywhere from 1-5lbs per hack, plus I usually lose a bit (.5-1lb) after I end the hack (weird, but other people have reported this too). I haven't had an issue with gaining it back-once it's gone from the hack it tends to stay gone for me (within .5lb)

I'm excited that there's interest in doing this next week! One tip-buy your potatoes ahead of time and buy more than you think you're going to use. The goal is to eat to satiety and you want to make sure you have enough on hand, to avoid having to run to the grocery store (or drive through McDonalds ).

I've done it a few times. The results weren't anything to write home about for me.

I would have 2-3 lbs per day. I cooked them the day before and chilled (for the RS), then heated when I was going to eat them. Either in broth for kind of a thick soup, or sliced and fried in spray oil with SF ketchup.

Just start with one day and see how it goes, and then add days as you feel like it I'm planning on doing 3-4 days next week. You should see a loss after the first day or two (assuming something else isn't going on, like PMS etc).
