i am better...

Hi ya'll,
Thanks for asking about me. I am getting better.

I was in the hospital for 2 months from Feb 3 until about the 18th of April and then I went to a physical therapy place for about 3 weeks. i'm still learning to walk again with a walker.

I had a staff infection which they called mercer or something like that. It looked like a spider bite but it kept swelling up and infected my blood. I collapsed at home and had to get EMS to take me to the local hospital and was in ICU for 2 days there and then they sent me to a specialist hospital via helicopter in SA and I was in ICU there for over a month. I also had a collapsed lung due to pneumonia, which I didn't know I had and the staff infection didn't help.

They had to drain my lung with a tube and I actually quit breathing 4 times. I was intubated twice and once I came to and pulled the tube out of my throat so they had to put it back in again and restrained me.Then they transferred me to another hospital.

After all this, I needed a bi-pap mask to get the CO2 out of my lungs since they weren't able to do that on their own and I fought having to wear that mask. I think my heartbeat was 44 when it was good. But I got better.
Then my kidneys failed due to all the antibiotics they gave me and it was a lot and they had to give me blood and insulin cuz they put this nasty liquid down my nose tube to feed me. Even though I was out of it, I could smell that stuff. ugh!!

So then I had to go to diaylisis (SP) 3 days per week for a month, some of it while I was in the 3rd hospital. The other at a renal clinic as an acute kidney patient. Most of this while I was in the skilled nursing facility for physical therapy.

I was away from home for 3 months and I sure missed it and my dog and my wife, but she did come to see me when she could. We just hated leaving the dog alone overnight. He was alone for 2 weeks cuz my wife stayed at the hospital since they didn't think I was going to make it. My relatives came and fed and watered my dog for us, but he was all alone for the first time ever in his life and I know he was traumatized as well as us. My wife was a wreck just worrying about me.

So in a matter of 8 weeks, I lost all my muscles and I was as weak as a baby. I couldn't even lift my head or legs or reach one arm across to the other cuz my hand just fell down limp. I needed a lot of physical therapy.

I am not having diaylisis right now, but I have to go to SA to my kidney doc every week and have blood taken to check my potassium and creatinine levels. If they are staying low enough for a month, then I may
get to be off dialysis cuz my kidneys have started working properly. I have this thing in my body that they hook the diaylisis machine to. It's no fun being me right now.

I got home about 12 days ago, but I couldn't even get up out of my wheelchair without help and finally, this week, I mastered that. I use a walker...ya know...weebles wobble, but they don't fall down...lol.....I have to make light of this so I an keep going and get back to normal.

I ask that everyone please pray for me and that my kidneys are healed.
It's really hard to be on a low potassium, low salt, low car, sugar free, vegetarian diet. It seems that most things have both in them. If I find low potassium, then the sodium is terrible and vice versa.

I used to live on nuts, seeds, cheese....can't have much if any of those now either. Hopefully, its temporary, but we have to play that one by ear.
I have lots of doctor appointments and a sleep thing where they check you for sleep apnea and I have to go to an internal medicine doc and a lung doc and the list goes on and on.

This is the first time I could get to my desk to use my pc.

It looks kind of deserted around here.
I hope everyone comes back to post. I hope everyone else is ok.

Nigel, what an awful thing to happen. So sorry to read all this.

So thankful you are on the mend and getting stronger every day. Do you know how you got the staff infection? That is so scary.

I know your strong, and you take care of yourself, you eat good so all that is in your favor for recovery. Please check in when you can.... this place is a ghost town without you!

Saying a prayer for you, your wife and dog...... keeping you all close in good vibes and thoughts.......

Anna

Thank you everyone. I appreciate all the well wishes and concern.
I have missed all of you and being here.

As for what caused it, the docs have no idea.
I thought it was a spider bite under my chin and then it kept getting bigger and bigger and I was actually planning on going to the doc the next day, I just waited too long.

From what I was told, it could be anything and we all carry that MRSA in our bodies and maybe I scratched that bump and it got infected....they were pretty vague about knowing the actual cause.

It just seems like forever to be able to walk normally again. I'm still using a walker and the wheelchair and exercising as much as I can, but I can't do a lot cuz my legs and feet get really sore and tired.

I hope everyone here is doing well.

Thank you, ouizoid.
It is trying...and I am trying and I'm tired of not being able to do much, but I don't want to whine or complain, just sayin.
I'm glad that it wasn't worse than it was. I am here for a reason, so hopefully it will be revealed to me soon.

Wow....I don't come on this site very often but I decided I wanted to vastly reduce the amount of meat I eat. I read your story Nigel and I am SO sorry for all you have been through. That is awful. Sending thoughts and prayers for healing.

Hi ouizoid,
I'm getting stronger each day and still having to use the walker and the wheelchair, but I'm getting better at it. Thank you for asking about me.
Kidney doc says no diaylisis(sp) this week, so that makes me happy.

Nigel, that's great. Kidneys are healing. How's the diet going with the Davita plan?

Thanks everyone..
The Davita plan is okay, but you will starve to death on it if you follow the portion sizes...lol....I'm a work in progress and every day I get a little better at it.
I guess nobody said this would be easy. lol

How's it going Nigel? No more dialysis I hope that would be a really good sign.
Surviving the diet?
Hope you're well and walking all over the ranch.

Hi everyone,
thanks for asking about me. I had to go back into the hospital cuz I had fluid around my heart and lungs. They did surgery to remove the fluid around my heart and put in a window in case the fluid comes back.
I had tubes in my side cuz it was around my left lung. The lab couldn't figure out what caused this. I'm home again now and much better.
I don't think I was fully recovered the last time they let me out of the hospital. I hope everyone else is doing good.

That sucks, Nigel. I hope this is your last hospital visit.
How's all the rest going? No more dialysis I hope.
Were you able to keep the muscle/strength you were gaining or was it bedrest again?
Hope you can eat your favorite foods again.

I wasn't quite back at square one when I got home this time, but its still a struggle. No diaylisis so far. I see the kidney doc next week. I have lots of doctor follow up visits to complete.
