Kefir

Anyone make their own? I want to try making it and wonder if anyone makes it from store bought kefir like you can with yogurt?

I've made both milk and water kefir for a long time and no it's not like yogurt, you need to get the appropriate grains to make it with. Often, people local to your area will advertise grains when they split them.

The grains go on forever! They just keep multiplying, hence people giving them away. If you have Freecycle or Craigslist, try searching on them for the kefir grains - lots of times I see people on there offering them up.

I make milk kefir but my grains don't like to grow. I have been doing it for about a year now. I don't really buy yogurt anymore because this has so much more probiotics.

I made it for a few months (milk kefir). It's not that difficult... But I was making more than I needed and got overwhelmed. I will say that I felt really good when I was drinking 2 glasses of kefir a day. I'd like to get back into it soon...

There was a wonderful woman here on LCF who got me started --I've forgotten her name.
