Cholesterol....... how low is too low?

I recently went in for a physical and I just saw the lab report. My total cholesterol is 157. The ratio is good, triglycerides are low, but is 157 too low? The report range is just <200, no low end.

I have little faith in the doctor really knowing much.

I had a very strange cholesterol report one time- I'd been potato hacking for about four months (totally vegan) and my cholesterol was 129. The doctor kept saying "low is good" but I was not convinced he knew what he was talking about. You DO need cholesterol!

After I resumed my normal diet it went back up to 180 and I was comfortable with that.. trigs and LDL were low as always.

The only thing I have thought of is I used to use more coconut oil when I was getting readings in the 180-190 range. So I had some this morning.

I have read that lower cholesterol levels are risky in the elderly. (Me) I am on statins. I have started to cut my dose on my own to let it go a little higher. If I take my total dose it goes as low as 124. My doctor doesn't know this, of course, but as long as he sees a number below 200 he is happy. Statins lower total cholesterol and LDL to some extent, but they also lower HDL, which I want to be a little higher than it is.

Gina, I think yours is good since your ratios are good, and Melissa, same with yours since you resumed regular eating. But I'm not a doctor, LOL, just my opinion.

Carol, I would worry more of it was a statin bringing it down and would probably do what you are doing.

Since I eat pretty well and my body 'naturally' decided to have a lowish level, I figure I'll add a little coconut oil and not fret about it.
