Sugar really is a scary thing. I've read several books/articles about it and I'm anxiously awaiting Taubes new book on sugar to come out!

Thanks for posting. I'll have to show my Mum, she's been low-carbing for about 8 weeks (lost weight and her previously medicated hypertension has vanished), but she just decided this week that chocolate bars are ok for her to eat! I think she needs a mini wake-up call

Sugar itself isn't evil. Sugar is also found in fruit and veggies and that is good food! Its just that it never was meant to be refined and added to everything we eat, without any fibre. For some people loading the blood stream causes serious problems, anyone with any kind of diabetic disorder or the genetics which causes obsesity. It is sort of similar to how we refine other deadly natural chemicals. In their refined state they become addictive, mother nature never intended us to eat them that way.

Fructose may be even worse than sugar. A N.Y.T. article written by Gary Taubes examines the issue. Google it for a very interesting read and something to consider the next time you think about biting into a 'healthy' little piece of fruit.

There is NO fruit in nature that can match the ~20g fructose in a 12 oz. soda, so I believe the isolation/concentration is the main problem. |

I'm pretty sure the info graph was talking in terms of refined sugar in general and not the sugars naturally found in vegetables, fruit, mushroom, etc.

The fruits we buy in the store have a higher sugar/fiber ratio than wild fruits. For example we have wild apples that grow on our lot. They are very tarte in comparison to the apples from the grocery store. I made a pie from apples we bought at a commercial orchard and I didn't even have to add sugar! Although now that I am LC I probably won't be doing that anymore, because even though there was no sugar in the filling (just apples), I still ate the whole pie. Now I treat fruit with the ultimate respect. No more than 1/4 cup at a time and it has to be paired with a lot of fat/fibre

No doubt about it. The gmo'd fruit of today is definitely sweeter than nature's product. But isn't that true about everything we eat these days? It's all been modified to some extent. cross hybridization, genetic modification, injections, etc etc etc. None of the food we eat is exactly what nature intended for us. So we make our choices based on what's available and affordable and do the best we can. God bless us everyone. |

I'm doing low carb, but I am actually trying to do it as close to nature's food as possible. Ie. nuts, veggies, meat, cheese, some fruits, some legumes. I'm trying to stay away from things that are highly processed or packaged. Even though we have GMOed our produce and products to make them sweeter or more desirable, that is our downfall because we eat for pleasure, while our ancestors ate for survival.

I don't think bananas were even edible as a raw fruit until they were selectively bred to be softer and sweeter.
