Joni, it's a popular film amongst LCFers. Here is a list of threads discussing the film:

Yep. I just watched it again last night since it's on Netflix instant streaming. I watched it several months ago on Hulu, but this time was better w/o all the commercials. Great movie. And it's a good intro for those doubters in our lives. My kids watched it with me and though they don't restrict carbs like I do, they at least understand better why I do.

I loved that movie. I saw it last fall. I got my husband to watch it to understand why I avoid most carbs since he's less of a reader than I am.
And I agree, the Fat Head blog is excellent too! |

I watched it on Hulu also. I love the doctor's reaction in the end at the post checkup.

I own this movie on dvd and I can't tell you how many times I've watched it.
The dvd has bonus interviews on it that are really interesting too. |

Doesn't the guy also prove that you can eat a junk food like Mcdonald's so long as you don't eat too much and you can lose weight? There are some points that might look good for LC but the movie isn't pushing LC is it?

But seeing how he ate, and what he ate was also impressive. What it accomplished for me was a few things, but among them, I'm less afraid of fast-food places. Seeing illustrations of what takes place with insulin resistance was very helpful, and it helped my view of the wrong carbs, particularly the bread ones. The way it helped is when I want some bread, my mind flashes to those illustrations of the "greedy fat cells," and how everything is locked up, slow in releasing, and how the whole dynamic is changed internally. I'm not quite sure how to repair the broken metabolism fully, but I know that avoiding breads, grains, HFCS, etc., is certainly the best start. Perhaps it's just staying the course, and it repairs itself over time. I haven't done much reading on it, and there are many books, and not knowing which book explains it best, in simple terms; so this really helped me. Thanks again!

I'd heard of the documentary on this and other forums, but finally watched it about a month ago with my husband. (it was listed under "political" rather than "science" in the documentary section of netflix) He was all ready to hear a diatribe about food, and wasn't all that interested (he watched part of Supersize Me when I watched it, and got upset about the anti-business aspect of it). Anyway, he ended up really intrigued. NOw maybe he understands my woe a little better.

Does it 'push' LC? Well, I think any mainstream nutritionist would say emphatically yes because there is plenty of LC through out the movie. When I watched it I thought it was more about low GI eating than LC though the two are very closely matched. |

i sure liked the cartoon diagrams describing how insulin works, it sure is an eye opener how the government screws with OUR health. I will LC for the rest of my life after watching this! Loved it!

the thing about the delivery of that movie is it FORCES you (me anyway) to have an aHA moment. It just logically does not make sense to eat grains after seeing those facts. I have been doing this WOE for almost a year , since the very day I watched Fat Head. I don't even have grain cravings because I know how bad they are for me, weight wise but also health wise!

I thought Fathead was incredibly well done, and much more sensible than "SuperSize Me!" Plus the all time worst movie/documentary quote comes from SuperSize Me!"..."Honey, ham is worse for you than heroine!" (Or was it addictive?)
Another documentary I found very compelling was Joe Cross' "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead". It isnt a low carb movie, it is a juicing movie, but I had to admire Joe Cross for living on fresh squeezed "green juice" for 60 straight days. Drinking that much green juice I'd have needed an adult diaper. You can watch this on Netflix as well. I'm not promoting it as an alternative to low carbing, I just personally found it fascinating. Dr. Oz makes me want to punch Dr. Oz.
But seriously, I love Tom Naughton (in a wholly professional, non-creeper way). I even bought extra copies of his film to hand out to friends and medical professionals to watch. One copy is permanently in the hands of my favorite doctor who serves the Makah Nation in Washington State. I love it! When you can entertain and educate simultaneously, you open minds and hearts. This is not a preachy film; it's a witty commentary on the human condition in the world today. |
