Don't Sweat the Vegetables?

Five-a-day fruit and veg policy rubbished by obesity researcher - Wales News - News - WalesOnline

I've always thought dieters are pushed to eat lots of fruit and veg, not because it's so much more nutritious than other food, but because humans can't digest most of it. Stuff the hole with water and cellulose, as engineers used to use sawdust in landfill. One or two servings a day is the most I can manage. So I was pleased to read this, even though every one else in her field disagrees with her.

Thank you for that.

I think it is going to be a long time before people will accept that fruits and some vegetables are not really healthy and can make some people fat!

The less fruit and vegetables I eat the thiner I become and the healthier I am. Therefore, they are not healthy for me.

It is counterintuitive because we have been brainwashed for so long.

“The World Health Organisation says around 8% of deaths worldwide are attributable to low fruit intake.”

Ok, but what % of deaths in this country are attributed to high fruit intake (i.e. high blood sugar)?

I think they are definitely healthy, but people are encouraged to eat too many of them. If you eat too much fruit, you will be eating too much sugar. But I don't see how we could do without vegetables, which provide fibre and so many nutrients.

The UK government's recommendation that we eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day has always struck me as absurd. How could a family of five afford that? And you'd have to do your weekly shop at the greengrocer with a wheelbarrow.

I see signs up in supermarkets saying a portion is a handful.. I could never manage that much a day, I'd have to return to being a vegetarian.
