Who is Your LC Guru? Who Changed Your Life?
I seem to be partial to those with blogs of late. I just need more than a book to keep me going, you know?
For me: 1) Gary Taubes (he has recently started a blog, but he scores here for posting his lectures on his website, and for writing Why We Get Fat; Good Calories, Bad Calories, and the NY Times Article, "What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie?" 2) Dr. Kurt Harris, of PaNu, paleonu (Thank You, Auntie Em!)--specifically, his 12 step plan ("Get Started", his post "How to Lose Weight," incredibly helpful to an insulin-resistant like me, his post "PaNu and Type II Diabetes," really helpful for me to read how someone put his plan to work, his post "What I Eat" and so many more. I wish he would write a book. 2) Dr. Eades (I am not cool with his 6 Week Cure book, but I am truly thankful for his blog and his book Protein Power) Oh, there are more. What are yours??? I am not looking for a debate, I am truly interested! I love to read and learn. If you know these gurus and think of someone similar you think I might like, or, well, even if not similar, please make a recommendation!

I have insulin resistance-my posts are biased for this! High fructose diets destroy liver's insulin sensitivity. Glutens bind up insulin and leptin receptors, interfering with satiety. Industrial vegetable oils contribute to inflammation of the liver that is part of metabolic syndrome. Read archevore/Kurt Harris for more info. Exercised muscles will up regulate insulin receptors. I always knew low carb was great for weight loss, but Jonny Bowdens book Living Low Carb opened my eyes to the WHY it was good for you. I have a completely different view of carbs, meat, and fat thanks to him.
Prior to reading that, I still couldn't wrap my head around the 'low carb/low fat isn't good' theory. Now I feel much more comfortable slathering butter all over everything before I eat it. lol |

Taubes got me hooked. And I only found his book on a whimsical browsing of his publisher's website, and I found it before it was released at that (I think releasing an obesity book right before Jan 1 was .... probably intentional? LOL)
Had I never found Taubes's book, well, I doubt I'd be losing any weight right now. |

It's very good. It will really help you to understand the process. After I read it, I went back and bought GCBC. Trying to wade through that right now. I also got Life Without Bread. Not as strict but very informative and motivating.

A former co-worker encouraged me to do the Atkin's diet with her. There were about 5 of us doing it. I was doing the diet before reading the book (not a very good idea) and losing weight. When I read the book it just clicked. I then stopped following it and years later I gained more and more weight. I have found my way back to it and I know this is the way I need to be eating the rest of my life.
For those of you who have read Gary Taubes' books...which one do you recommend? I read a short article by him in Reader's Digest recently and I would love to read one of his books and get more and more info on LCing |

Pericone (don't agree with him anymore, but he was my introduction to LC)
Taubes (great mind, but he is really focused on two subjects to near exclusion with why we get fat and debunking the blood lipid heart disease connection) Peter, a.k.a Hyperlipid (tackles any study he finds interesting and finds hidden conclusions and insights in them, good or bad, really brilliant and funny) I'm really enjoying the way Peter on his blog Hyperlipid thinks. Plus he is TOO skinny and eats cream with chocolate all day. What a way to live. I thought I had to only eat bacon and eggs to be thin, paradigm shift, lol. Hi KT…
Dr Atkins is the target of my affection - and the one who made all this possible. I have no gurus whom I choose to follow. And my heros are the people here on the forum who have made it work for years and years...and they still drop in and encourage others even through they obviously can make it work without a forum to support them. I don't think any of the programs I see would work for me if I had to rigidly follow a plan of someone else's design. |

I wouldn't say they changed my life, but I've been influenced by Lyle McDonald (author of "The Ketogenic Diet") Dr. Mauro DiPasquale (author of "The Anabolic Diet" (arguably the first codification of a structured cyclical ketogenic diet)), and Dr. Jeff Volek (one of the authors of the new Atkins book, but I'm more interested in his clinical research).

Stillman changed my life in 1968. Those days I could lose a pound a day. Then along came Atkins a couple years later and became my guru. Now I rejoice if I lose a pound a week. I have never had to lose more than 10-20 pounds, so its slow.

Drs. Eades. And my little sister, who calls me (affectionately) fat boy. She gave me a book with a post-it note that said: "so fat boy can just be boy." That moment changed my entire life.
