Interesting Fawn.

I am guilty of the canned tomatos (soups) and I was suprised to see the root veggies.

In my recent foray into Raw one of the things I read was that most root veggies were safe to eat raw and not organic because they were not exposed to pesticides.

I guess if you think about it maybe it can be absorbed thru the leaves also.

Not doing potatoes or carrots right now anyway!

I am so upset with the lack of good organic produce in my area, it's not very plentiful and if it is the prices are crazy.

Pomi makes outstanding preserved tomatoes and sauces that come in the same kind of cartons (paper) that almond breeze does.

Good article, Fawn. Thanks for sharing.

I sometimes buy crushed organic tomatoes in cans but other than that I don't eat the things on the list. I'll have to look a bit harder for glass/BPA free containers in the future. I do know that Eden Organics uses BPA-free cans.

I did just get back from grocery shopping and bought grassfed beef & buffalo, organic Granny Smith apples, organic cheese & yogurt and wild-caught salmon so I'm feeling pretty good about that.

I'm not so sure that is good either. Maybe for our health but not for the environment. I stopped buying broth in that kind of container because they are, to the best of my knowledge, bad for the environment.

Thank you for this wonderful article! It is both informative and scary. I am now much more committed to buying organic food. I'm not sure what my local grocery store has for a selection of organics but I'm hoping it will be good. I've never really paid attention before recently.

Maybe someone can come up with a recipe for homemade Rotel using fresh ingredients?

Actually, I just found several recipes on cooks.com for making and home canning Rotel tomatoes.

Good article. It's a jungle out there. I guess I need to grow my own tomatoes and learn to home can.
I wonder if the organic, such as Muir Glen are ok? Tomatoes are mostly the only thing I eat canned, and I must have tomatoes occasionally with my recipes.

Yeah,

And harvesting from our garden with no herbicides, fertilizers help too....

Ever noticed garden veggies are so so much better tasting than "store bought" varieties including "organic" ones?

Thanks for posting this Fawn. It's going to be hard to forego smoked salmon over the Christmas/New Years food fest, but the only smoked salmon available here is from Norway or Scotland, and I'm pretty sure it is all farmed (Atlantic).
There's a canned red sockeye salmon available, but I much prefer smoked.
The fresh salmon is all farmed.

i cannot access the list.

however, if there are any no carb or low carb items there, then there will be more for me. My budget does not allow me to eat organic, wild, or free range anything. If I die sooner, well, that is the way it will have to be. I will donate my 3rd eye to science. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI

I am in the same boat! Not only that, I have been eating these things for so many years, I don't think it would make much difference if I could switch now.

I tried Rotel and decided to just cut up a small tomato and onions and peppers into a pan with a little water and butter instead. Simmer for five minutes.

I used to be obsessed with this kind of stuff, had to grow my own food and such. I had to make a major change to be able to eat Low Carb, and now I can't justify excessive concern about possible minute amounts of possible toxins which may or may not actually be in one food or another. I don't drink or smoke, so I'm ahead of 90% of Americans, I eat whole foods so I'm ahead of 90% of what's left and at some point I just quit worrying, which puts me ahead of 90% of that remnant.

I'm OK with that.

The only one that I really am trying to change for myself is the beef. I really, really do believe that grass fed beef is WAY better. But it is so expensive. There's a Safeway (supermarket) two blocks away from me with your standard selections and a few blocks from there is a beautiful little butcher shop that carries grass fed beef. Standard ground beef can be had for around $3 a pound. The grass fed is around $8 a pound. Yeah, that answers that for now.

Ya... no problem with trying to do your best. But most of it can be solved without reading scare articles that anyone on a budget can't really follow anyway. Just buy whole foods, wash them well and you will probably be OK. I know a ninety year old guy who eats trash and yet feels well and is more active than me. It's a crapshoot.

The tetra packs are recycleable so I thought they wrere o.k.? I buy a lot and they go in the recycle bin each week. Is there some other issue surrounding this packaging?

You're lucky you can recycle them. According to their site only 20% of the total US residents across 26 states have access to carton recycling. There is no carton recycling here.

I'm clear except for the canned tomatoes but that's not hard to avoid in the future.

However this comment is somewhat careless:
"We need to respect the fact that cows are herbivores, and that does not mean feeding them corn and chicken manure," says Salatin.

Feeding cattle chicken manure? That's just fertilizer for the soil. Gets nitrogen levels back up on plots of land where the nutrients have been leached. Not like there's chicken crap in cattle feed.
