The Beck Diet Solution

I totally recommend this to everyone. Very helpful for any weight loss plan you may be on. This has really gotten me though.

When I was at college, I noted what the thin girls bought at the school cafe every day during lunch. 95% of them bought nothing but bottled water, and the other 5% bought armloads of pizza. I saw one of them buy a salad ONCE... and it was a side salad smaller than your fist. The whole thing just screamed anorexia.

I watched them while eating a cold cut sandwich on wonderbread every day. How much more normal of a lunch can you think of? But I weighed three times as much as any of them.

So, yeah, I couldn't get very far into the book. I was too ticked at the author, who based her theory on the exact opposite of what I'd observed.

Sorry for the vent, it's just the first opportunity I've had.

I don't know. Maybe one day I'll skip those chapters and try again.

Hmmm, that didn't jump out at me at all. There are other factors why people gain too. I did have to understand that no it isn't fair that I am this way but I know it is because of my Thyroid too.

I bought it recently, but haven't had the chance to read it yet. Do you think it promotes anorexia or dysfunctional behaviors?

A very slim coworker of mine, nice girl with a great personality otherwise, eats only this (no exceptions) - salad (no dressing), low-fat cheese, fruits, vegetables, low-fat candy, low-fat cookies. It seems dysfunctional to me. And yet she weighs 118 lbs. at 5'7", and I - over 300.

No, not at all. It says that thin people are thin because they consciously make better food choices, and that we should emulate them.

It may be partially true, but I think a big role is also played by the person's genetics, levels of thyroid function, activity level, and general metabolism. DH is skinny but he definitely eats more than I do and his food choices are not of the best kind, actually, they are pretty atrocious.

I think it says something that the thin people who do make good food choices... are called "health nuts."

Ouch! I have a full time job and a family, plus a household to run. How can I sustain a "health nut" lifestyle which requires hours of daily exercise and all kinds of special foods and supplements?

I agree... I bought the book and then bought the book on CDs too. I loaded the CDs on my MP3 player and listen to it or selected sections of it when walking my dog, at the dog park, and in my car. I found it helps reinforce my committment to my food plan...

I haven't been able, despite good intensions, to follow the day by day approach recommended in the book. But I have found much of the advice extremely helpful--particularly when my emotional inner voice (sabotaging thoughts) starts to come up with excuses not to stick to my food plan.

This isn't easy and any helpful advice is greatly appreciated. Celebrate even the small victories as Beck recommends.

Hugs!!!

Nancy
