You only have $20 for the week....what do you buy?

Let's have some fun!

You only have $20 to spend on food for the week, and you are LCing! What do you buy?

Using your local prices..list what you would buy for one week.

I would buy
2-18 ct eggs ---------------$4.16
Qt of 1/2 & 1/2--------------$2.00
1 bag lettuce----------------$1.00
1 container grape tomatoes---$2.50
2 cucumber------------------$1.00
1 pkg of chicken drums (14 pk)-$4.16
5 cans of tuna-----------------$5.00

Total $19.82

T-Dawg 01-23-2009 08:53 PM

5 Dozen Box of large eggs: $8.00
2lbs of Ground Beef: $4.00
1 package of Turkey Pepperoni $2.00
1 package of Deli Sliced Swiss Cheese (20 thick slices) $4.00
2 Cucumbers $1.00
4 Roma Tomatoes $1.00ish

girl81 01-23-2009 10:58 PM

10 dozen eggs (on sale) .... $10
whole chicken (99cents per lb on sale).... $5
10lb cabbage (50cents per lb)..... $5

it would be a gassy week.

SpiritRunner00 01-24-2009 12:58 AM

1. 5 1/2 dozen eggs, which I buy them for under $4
2. Chicken, which usually for a pack that will last me a week is $11
3. Ragu Double Cheddar sauce (good for dipping or extra flavor) under $4 - I eat a very very small amount of this daily, and it just tastes sooo good!

That's roughly $19 dollars already spent, and if I came out with more money from the things I bought that were under $4 dollars... I'd buy Turkey Sausage that is $1.27 here. Yum!

suzanneyea 01-24-2009 03:09 AM

twenty pounds of ground beef at 99 cents a pound.

Suzanne beat me to it. I'd also buy 20 pounds of ground beef if I could get it marked down to 99-cents or 10 pounds if it was full price. That would still give me more than a pound of meat a day unless of course my husband wanted something to eat too, LOL.

Danceruk 01-24-2009 04:56 AM

unfortunately I have to figure out this much money for a week a bit too often!

Done the UK conversion, $20 is... 14.47 TODAY..

5 cartons of 15 eggs : 5.00

Heavy cream x3 : 2.40

Bottle of Olive Oil 1.80

Head of lettuce $2
Cabbage $1
Box of pure beef burgers (8 in box, if they're still on sale) $5

Don't think I could get ALL of that for under $20 where I live...but if I could, that's exactly what I would get!! Great thread!

I would buy $20 worth of ground beef and shop around to find it at $0.99/lb. We are living on a very tight budget so this isn't too far from my reality right now.

Tyl 01-24-2009 07:04 AM

3.5 dozen eggs $5
2.5 pounds ground beef $4.00

Excellent thread!

Here in Vermont the cost of living is high. I'm amazed at some of the prices some of you are able to get.

For $20.00 I could get:

3 doz cage-free/omega eggs 2.99 per doz
1 pkg Romaine 3.99
small bar super sharp Cabot cheddar 2.29
tuna (gold can Bumble Bee for no soy-I'm hypothyroid) 1.79 per can

With the little left of my twenty, I could get a 1-pound bag of frozen broccoli for 1.39.

I would buy what you listed, Heather with the exception of the lettuce & tomatoes. I find it's a waste of money. I'd buy two big bags of frozen Broccoli and Cauliflower @1.39 eatch.

GREAT thread in this economy !

Heather150 01-24-2009 11:15 AM

Why is lettuce and tomatoes a waste of money? What am I missing?
