A New Earth Awakening to Your Life's Purpose
by Eckhart Tolle.....Oprahs Book club selection
I am searching for others who are also reading this book. I would love to be able to discuss it with you. Please come and join me. Unfortunately I came down with the flu last night and this is the first I am sitting up all day. I wanted to get this up and going though. Please join in. I had a harder time with the chapter on the Ego. I jokingly said my ego was in the way of me getting it. I was listening to Oprah and Friends on the radio and she was playing the video of the webinar on chapter 2. Someone asked that very question. Eckart said that the ego WAS getting in the way! I reread that chapter twice for it to sink in. I need to get going on chapter 3. How is everyone else doing? xoxox Deborah |

I wanted to share a wonderful moment I had regarding chapter one. My father has been in the hospital and all I have done is worry about him. I kept thinking what will happen if he dies, how will I respond? I had many questions going through my head and much noise going on in there as well. I remembered what I read about being in the moment. I was sitting by dads bed and I said to myself, "be in the moment." So I did just that, I cut out all my noise and all my worries and all my questions. I grabbed dads hand and was thinking, this is your dad here and now, and you are holding his hand, appreciate him now. I looked into his eyes and mind you dad has Alzheimers and hardly ever makes sense anymore, he said to me very clearly, "I love you Deborah, you will always be my baby." I replied, " I love you to dad." In that moment all there was love and appreciation and no worries, or questions. It was a pure moment and one I will never forget. Reading chapter one helped me have that moment.
Do you have one to share? Last edited by Queeny : 03-13-2008 at 03:35 PM. |

What a touching moment.
![]() I still have to catch up on Lesson II. The class is on too late for me. I am hoping that when I get in touch with my stillness it doesn't say to me: "Old woman: life wanted you to be helping the chimps. The ship has sailed." . |

Queeny ty for starting this thread!
I had an easier time with chapter2 than chapter 1. I love how you were so present with Papa, and it's clear to me that helped him to also be in the moment with you. I agree with Eckhart that that is the very best we can do or be for one another. what I have noticed in practising being in the moment is that it seems to take alot of energy for me, in that afterwards I tend to need a long nap!! interesting! What i have found to be my favorite way to be present is to put on some music and to lay down and close eyes and try to feel where in my body the music resonates. (it is easier when there is some drumming going on) it was so interesting and enjoyable. I think it is interesting that many many years ago, before the Power Of Now was even written, a counsilor told me that when she was counsiling some clients on death and dying, that what she would do while listening was to gently tap her fingers on her thigh, to remind herself to be in the moment. and in doing that it would enable to her to truely be there for the people yet at the same time prevent her from being sucked into the deep sadness so she would not become an emotional wreck (as you can imagine might happen doing this type of work 8 hours a day every day) I am really enjoying the audio book, I love hearing Eckharts soothing voice read his words. I have been listening to the chapter and then doing the online video classroom on tuesday mornings. I designate this time as 'me time' ![]() I like to be able to stop the video to write notes in my online journal (multitasking challeneged here )xo

Deborah - I love that moment you had with Papa, it brought tears to my eyes.
Thanks for starting this thread.Hi Jezzie - Funny, I have asked God what my purpose in life is and I told him that I thought there was more to life and what I am to do than working in the law field. Oddly enough, the law firm I worked for closed in July after asking that question. I am still awaiting his answer, but I truly believe I am supposed to help people. I don't think you are ever too old to find your life's purpose. Maybe you can still catch that ship to get to the chimps. ![]() Diana - I think I have always been a very "in the moment" person because when I was reading about looking at the flower and just appreciating it's beauty, etc., I thought, I do that all the time. I have birds, bunnies, my garden that I just love to look at and appreciate the beauty of its essence. I've been reviewing the video on Tuesday, too. You're right, it is nice to pause it and reflect on what is being said. I'm on Chapter 4 right now, are you all reading ahead or just reading the chapter they are going to discuss?

I'm excited about the book.
Thank you for sharing that special moment with your dad, Queeny. It brought tears to my eyes. I haven't read a lot on the book yet. I just reread the *The Ring* . I'm not sure what chapter its in...probably 1. I was really going over the term of *self*. I am in training for a dyslexia correction course...and we have a huge part of the program for ADD clients on Self, I , and am. It was very weird, the comparison. I do love the book...I signed up for the online class, but I've never been home to watch it...I think I am going to review it this next week. I'm excited...but I wish that I had more time. I will try and catch up with you guys, maybe we can do a weekly or bi weekly review. Talk with you soon.

Deb, thanks for sharing that beautiful story!! Treasure the moments you have with him.
I have to admit that I have been having far too much fun and very little time to devote to the book or the website. I am hoping that with the time off I have left I can get caught up and bring my focus back. I think tho that without having read the part I already have I would not have had the perspective I did in experiencing the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley as I did. Awe is such a small word for the wonderment you experience in seeing something as perfect and whole as these. It certainly reminds you of how small a part we have in this play we call life. There are much more grander things for us to experience. Getting rid of the noise and the chatter is really the challenge. It keeps us stuck. How beautiful life truly is when you can see it as it truly is.

I can'r wait to be in the moment All the time!ooops if I can't wait, then I am thinking in the future and not being in the now ![]() Lar was having a hard time yesterday (gave up ciggies again) with negative thoughts plague-ing him. we talked about it and then came to the conclution that as long as he was Aware that it was just his ego thinking the thoughts, then he was being present! whoohoo that was a happy discovery!my pal at work needed me to switch days with her so Monday I have off and will do chapter 3 and then the online classroom with Oprah and Eckhart! hope the webcast works for me, if not i will do it tues morning before work. Lucki that is awesome that you got to go to the Grand Canyon and be in all that majesty! I remember being there as a kid and really enjoyed that wonderous experience!! wow so happy to see Michele, Di, Lucki , yakyak and Jezzie posting
![]() I have not read chapter 3 yet. I still am having stomach problems and have not done much of anything. I have missed the webinars as something always comes up for me. Tomorrow will be no different as it is St. Pattys day and I will be serving green beer all day. We are opening at 7am to serve breakfast. I was happy that I did not have problems viewing chapter 2 on the internet the next day. Lucki I have always wanted to take dd to see the Grand Canyon. I know I would be in awe of it. I really want to go to Sedona too. Do you know how far Sedona is from the Grand Canyon? Living each moment in the now, wow that is really hard. I can't imagine it, but then again if was imagining then I would not be in the moment. I am happy to remember to do it each day. I can't wait for it to be second nature or I hope it will. My koi pond has always helped me live in the now. That is where I sit and stare at flowers, bugs, a new leaf, a bubble in the water, the lips on my fish....So I am happy that it is warming up here in Michigan. Michele as you know I retired from teaching and I have often asked God, what is my new purpose. My old purpose was so fulfilling and without it, I was lost. Then came dad and he was my new purpose. I am still asking for more though. I also want to do something where you help people. Diana that is so cool that Lar is with you every step of the way. You two are such soul mates. He sounds like such a neat guy. ![]() I am going to spend the rest of the day with dad. I need to remember to stay in the moment with him. He was just taken back to the nursing home from the hospital. He has been tied down all this time. He would not stop pulling iv's out. I won't get into the stories, too depressing and upsetting to talk about. His birthday is Thursday too. I'm going to decorate his room again as they moved all of dads stuff in storage when he was gone. (it's procedure ) Anyway see how easy it is for me to go off the moment ![]() I hope to read chapter 3 when I get home. |

Deb - the Grand Canyon is one of those trips that you can talk about doing but you just gotta do it. We lucked out with the weather for sure......The last time we went, which is all we could talk about once we got there, we actually ran into the Dalai Lama. When we got to Yavapai point again this time we knew exactly where we had seen him and the experience was just as real now as it was then. It truly is a remarkable place. I can't wait to go back!!! Sedona is a few hours south of the Grand Canyon. It is probably an hour and a half or two hours north of Phoenix....I know it is really close to Flagstaff.
![]() I am hoping to catch the webcast tomorrow and get caught up. i've forgotten how relaxing this type of "talk" can be!! You'd think with a degree in metaphysics it would be more a part of my life!! I read Kim Eng's blog and it just hit home with me. I shouldn't find my reverence at the Grand Canyon but i am glad that things like exist to remind me where it is. |

Wow lucki I didn't know you had a degree in metaphysics....that is awesome. I have never heard of Yavapai. I will have to look it up. I can't believe you ran into the Dalai Lama, how cool is that! Did you go on the new glass walkway, when you were at the Grand Canyon? I don't know if I have the guts to do it. I heard it was exspensive to walk on it.
I am going to crash on the couch as I just bartended for almost 12 hours. (I forgot to tell DD I'm to old for this!! ha!) I doubt if I catch the webinar. I have not read chapter 3 yet anyway, and I would like to do that first. |

I might even watch the first one a second time. I can't even imagine the awe I would feel if I met the Dalai Lama. |

I just got an email that the Dali Lama is coming to Ann Arbor to speak. They are selling tickets through ticket master. Has anyone heard him speak? I am wondering if this would be worthwhile to buy a ticket.

Well the Dali Lama tickets are out of the question. I tried to purchase them and they are 1000 dollars plus fees and that is each!
I got an email someone joined my , A New Earth reading group on Oprahs forum. They requested an email back. I am baffled how to access the group I set up called "One Song." I have not caught up on my reading as I have to busy with dad and today was his birthday, so I spent the day with him. I hope to go read chapter 3 now. |

I consider myself very blessed to have seen him. When he crossed our path we stopped to let him by. I felt myself slightly lean forward and the feeling i remember was not being able to move forward; to allow him to pass and when he did it was like time stood still. There was a quietness and wholeness. My oldest dd said she felt overwhelming peace and love. After he passed by we went forward and I felt like i had to look back. When I did he had stopped and was looking back at us!! What if met up on IM somewhere or chat here to discuss the book on a night we can all make it??? |
