The Wine and Food Lover's Diet
The Wine and Food Lover's Diet was written by Phillip Tirman, M.D. and published by Chronicle Books.
I've checked this out of the library twice just for the recipes. This book is filled with delicious low carb recipes such as Seafood Cakes with Lemon Creme Fraiche, Sole Stuffed with Asparagus and Hazelnuts, Mediterranean Spiced Chicken with Olives and Almonds, Eggplant Rolls Stuffed with Three Cheeses, Peanut Butter Souffles with Chocolate Sauce, Trail Bark (made with pistachios, hazelnuts and dark chocolate) and Flourless Chocolate Cake. One thing I really like about this book is that it pairs the wine and food. Of course wine is optional, but for those of us who love wine, it is a nice added touch. There are recommended food lists, but no calorie or carb counting, so it might be a little difficult for inexperienced low carbers to continue the diet after the initial 28 days of recipes are used. Although it doesn't call itself a low carb book, it has several interesting chapters that support at lowered carbs. One is the chapter called The Storage Cascade in which the author describes howhigh-glycemic carbs such as bread, candy potatoes and white rice raise blod sugar faster and higher than low glycemic carbs and stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin which instructs the body to burn sugar instead of fat for energy and also to store fat. In this chater, he also talks about what he calls the " echo hunger cycle," which is his term for the plunge in blood sugar that causes hunger and sleepiness just a few hours after eating a meal high in carbs. Another intersting chapter is entitled, "Carbohydrates and the Enabler Theory." In this chapter, the author describes which carbs are better than others, distinguishing between simple and complex carbs. He also includes a very good chapter on fats and how they have been vilified by low fat advocates. The Wine and Food Lover's Diet is intelligently written and beautifully illustrated with many color photos of the recipes. It is an excellant book for those who don't want to do a low carb diet as strict as Atkins or for those who are on Atkins OWL or Maintenance.
