What's a good health and diet book?

I know, I know... Atkins is the obvious answer.

The thing is, my sister is having a lot of health problems. She also wants to lose some weight (maybe 15 pounds), but I'm not sure she needs a ketogenic diet to lose it. I'm afraid if she is strict, it will be very hard for her to keep it off, and may trigger a binge/weight gain cycle.

So what I'm looking for is a "kinda" low carb book that focuses on good health. I'm looking for a more natural one (I am against soy, grains, dairy and artificial sweeteners).... is there a book like this out there? Is Mercola's new book kinda like this? I'm trying to not make her neurotic about health and every little thing out there, but more aware.

Any suggestions on a basic, good read for her?

Thanks!

A couple of books I've read recently are "The Glycemic Load Diet" by Dr. Rob Thompson and "Natural Health and Weight Loss" by Barry Groves.

How about Sugar Busters. It is really straight forward.

I also second The Glycemic Load Diet.

I recently bought "You On a Diet" by Dr Oz and found it to be very interesting and not terribly restrictive. I'm not following his plan to the T, but I did find some good info in it that I incorporated into my plan

The best book by far which I think every family should own is the encyclopedia of healing foods by Michael Murray M.D. Low carb really is all about a whole foods lifestyle. There are just varying levels of a low carb plan. Some people do not do well with restriction, others need it. This book talks about a whole foods lifestyle as well as pointing out different nutrients foods carry and their purpose in the body. Basically, it's a book about human nutrition that is easy to read.

Go to a bookstore that has reading areas, pick up a couple of books and take your time paging through to see what plan you can stick with

This is a great book! I found it an all round informative health and diet book, and it certainly focuses on maintaining and improving health. A good friend of mine lost 25 lbs in 4 monts doing this, and has maintained ever since!

Love both of those books. They helped me tremendously in overcoming my eating disorder. I also love The Rules of Normal Eating and How to Survive Your Diet. Both books are in the same vein as the ones Jackie listed above, I just tend to get very focused on one subject and read every related thing I can get my hands on.

Protein Power Lifeplan. It's not just a diet book....it's all about health issues and it's GREAT.

Also, look into "The Brain Trust". I just ordered it and have heard great things about it.

The Brain Trust Program, krill oil and menopause | Health & Nutrition by Michael R. Eades, M.D.

Have you heard anything about krill becoming extinct? I've been quite interested in this product but currently in my area of California we are seeing quite a decline in the coho salmon migration up the river and scientists claim this is due to the decline of krill which is what the salmon feed on.

I'd like to use the product but do not want to contribute to extinction.
