Gary Taubes New Book is Coming Out!

For those who remember Gary Taubes famous NY Times Article "What if Fat Doesn't Make you Fat?"...he's been working on a new book these past few years which will definitely (thank goodness), take lowcarbing out of the ugly stepchild category with the general public.

It is called Good Calories, Bad Calories will be out in September, just in time for my birthday! Know what I'm getting!

Just thought I'd share for those who have followed Gary Taubes articles over the years. His other articles "The Soft Science of Dietary Fat" is available widely over the internet. Oh, and he still low carbs...just read an interview with him where he proudly stated he had rack of lamb and arugula salad for lunch!!! My kind of guy!

Hey there, Joycelyn -

I just ran across your post.

Thank you for posting this.

I will definitely give this a "look-see" in September when it comes out.

Be sure to post a review of it if you read it before any of the others of us.

I have become a tad bit cautious of the former hi-profile media-type low-carbers switching to lighter terms, so I might be a little suspicious because of the title. It is as if they became afraid of using the term "low-carb."

Lately, from the lastest study, the tide seems to be turning again and the actual term of "low-carb" is becoming used more and more in the media.

It was good to see what he had for lunch. That's a definite and could be a good indicator of his steadiness on this issue. It sounds good.

Thanks again for posting this.

Annie

The New York Times has Gary Taubes's July 7, 2002, article "What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie?" online.

Psalm, I have said this before, but your posts are a blessing.

Actually the title of his book was originally going to be "A Big Fat Lie" and it had a picture of a big steak with a pat of butter melting on it on the cover (just what I'm having for dinner tonight!)...but he's going with a big publisher, and honestly I think he was wise to change the title, so that it will sell. However, he is definitely supportive of low carb and the whole book is geared to the low carb community/research. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

You know initially, I too was angry at all the authors abandoning the ship and afraid to use the title low carb anymore - Dana Carpender, one of the most prolific low carb writers, titled her last book "Every Calorie Counts" and ouch...I thought she was a total sell-out at the time.

But now I think about it and I realize in order to get their books published, authors have to be creative with their titles, since low carb has lost the boom it had in the early 2000's. So now my attitude is, get the word out even if you have to disguise it! Heck, even my favorite low carb milk went from being called Carb Countdown milk to being called Calorie Countdown milk. Same thing, different wording.

I still wish authors would just come out and title their books "low carb whatever", but Dana Carpender has publicly stated they can't get published if they do.

Now my attitude is, just get the word out, no matter what it takes.

I wish I had the link to Gary Taubes interview, but I don't. However, I think you will be very pleasantly surprised. I can't wait until it's released!

And thank you again for your wonderful posts. You are a true inspiration. I wish there were more folks like you.

zelia, thanks for that link. Another earlier article from him that I like even better (talks about the politics of fats), is called "The Soft Science of Dietary Fat." He is a wonderful writer and the September release of his book will make the perfect birthday gift for me!

zelia, we must be posting at the same time. You found the article! You're the best! Thanks for posting. I'm not the most computer literate and don't know how to post links.
