I watched this show today and made some notes. I am a dedicated low carber and much of what was said is not consistent with what we know about low carbing, but there is some good information. Here are my notes from the show:
Phase I of Bob Greene’s diet Month long rev-up. Weigh yourself. Then don’t look at the scale for at least a month. Get moving. Add the following to your diet: water 48 ounces; vitamin supplement; Eliminate alcohol; stop eating two hours before bedtime; restrict calories; Eat three meals a day and at least one snack each day. Give yourself a time that is the cutoff time for when you stop eating each day. Oprah’s time is 7:30 PM. If you are overweight, ask yourself: What kind of life do you really want? Stop lying to yourself. The first month is about getting your mind ready for the transformation. Each time you say you are going to start on Monday and you don’t, its you lying to yourself. You eventually don’t trust yourself. Then you think you’re not worthy for the weight loss. Make the emotional connection between how you feel and what you eat. Answer these three key questions: 1) Why are you overweight? Don’t give just superficial answers. Give the emotional answer. Its almost always deeper than what you first think. 2) Why do you want to lose the weight? 3) Is this the first time you attempted to lose the weight? If not, why weren’t you successful in the past? Sometimes we lack the motivation to do something, but if you get started and do it first then the motivation will come. Only make short term goals. Phase II Watch out for these types of foods: (replace with something else) 1) Soda (soft drinks) regular or diet 2) Transfats 3) Fried foods 4) white breads/pastas 5) high fat dairy products 6) There was one more but my mother called - ……… If your life isn’t working – change it. You maintain and lose weight more effectively the more vegetables you pack into your diet. Use olive oil, second choice is canola oil. Bob Greene has a label he uses to endorse foods he approves of. It has “bestlife” on the label. Key to this diet is not feeling like you’re being deprived. As you get close to your goal and reach your goal, its important to be able to add back food. Phase III – you’re within 20 pounds of your goal. Is about refining a step further how you eat and what you bring into your diet. The book tells more about when to move into this phase. You can go to Oprah.com for more information. This is the year to end your struggle with weight. --------------------- Again, I am a dedicated low carb dieter and am currently in induction. But 15 years ago I lost 70 pounds on Atkins. I do think that there are things that can be learned from other people and there are some good things in Bob Greene's program. I hope this is of benefit to some of you.

I loved the show....
His tips were great, and I like the month to ease into it. That's a new and novel idea. Of course I loved seeing the before and after people. The last time I remember more of connecting to the reasons why you are overeating, "make the connection" but I'm sure they just had time constraints. |

I do like his approach because he tackles the difficult questions that people often don't want to face about why they are overweight to begin with. That's important. And he doesn't offer a quick fix solution. I loved Oprah's remark "There is no magic pill. If there was, I'd have it." So true! With her money and influence she certainly would.
I was a little put off by all the product placement. It was so commercial. Those salad dressing sprays have corn syrup in them, and Yoplait yogurt is full of sugar! |

Did you see Bob's little cute face on the Cheerio box? Hmmm..and he recommends soy..yikes..He hasn't done his research about that, has he?
Not great for thyroid patients or even others.. I like Bob..and he has to "hype" another book for his family..which is fine. But, not for me..thank you. |

What are Bob Greene's creditentials? Is this another person like Suzanne Somers who gives advice based on something other than evidence?
I don't mean to be cynical, however, I am one of "those" people who my whole life followed whatever the "new" diet of the week was. Most of which were written by people who had nothing to substantiate it. But that didn't stop me! I know what works, and I know what works for me. Low carb, pure and simple. It just pisses me off that people are always trying to make money off all the poor souls who battle their weight. Marieze

I liked some of the principles Greene spoke of (getting to the core of your issues). I didn't care for the products he endorsed. Goodness knows some of those products could lead me to binge eating and lead to further cravings.

I agree on the products; they were what I expected them to be. Unfortunately. I suppose we need to remember his diet is not attempting to be a sugar-free one. Quote:
There really wasn't much that was new to me, and some of his "facts" I disagree with based on my own experience & research. But, like Carolyn, I think Bob is cute & I like him. I also know better than to buy his book/try his latest plan.

Agreed! And yoplait yogurts have the worst kind of sugar in them: high fructose corn syrup! That stuff shouldn't be recommended for ANY type of eating program!

I can't say I agree with his comment about staying away from full fat products. I'm sitting here gulfing down my full fat plain yogurt!
![]() Is there a distinguishment between fitness expert, nurtirional expert, and workout coach? I thought Bob Greene was only actively involved in designing Oprah's workout that helped her lose the weight. I thought she had a personal chef who was a nutritionist. Did he mention anything about exercise? I don't get the current Oprah shows in Luxembourg so I'm hoping to mooch off of you guys for info! THanks!! |

Dr Oz makes more sense. He says to avoid packaged food. PS, I made the You On a Diet Asian Salmon last night, that was delicious!
Greene advocates Slim Fast Optima? The first 5 ingredients contain 2 types of sugar : INGREDIENTS: WATER, SKIM MILK POWDER, SUGAR, FRUCTOSE, CALCIUM CASEINATE, CANOLA OIL, COCOA POWDER, CELLULOSE GEL, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOUR, SOY LECITHIN, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, CARAGEENAN, DEXTROSE, MALTODEXTRIN, CITRIC ACID. VITAMINS AND MINERALS: DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM CITRATE, MAGNESIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM ASCORBATE, DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, FERRIC ORTHOPHOSPHATE, NIACINAMIDE, VITAMIN E ACETATE, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, MANGANESE SULFATE, BIOTIN, ZINC OXIDE, COPPER SULFATE, CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, VITAMIN D3, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, RIBOFLAVIN, VITAMIN B12, FOLIC ACID, SODIUM MOLYBDATE, SODIUM SELENITE. Label states total sugar for one canned drink is 34g. ![]() I'd try to find the Low Carb versions, they have maltodextin and sucrulose instead and 2 gms sugar per serving. This is similar to Dr Agaston teaming up with Kraft to do South Beach Foods. Last edited by ew1 : 01-16-2007 at 05:09 AM. |

Hey, if he is going to talk about lying, why doesn't he start talking about the "food" industry lying to the public about all the hidden carbs, sugars and chemicals they are putting into "food" to cut costs and increase profits. I am becoming more and more convinced this is why Americans are getting fatter and fatter. When I spent a summer with my DDIL in Europe in '99, we were shocked by the superior quality and taste of the foods in every country we visited. Pure, full fat yogurt, the best butter and cheeses I've ever tasted, freshest produce, freshest purest meats; unbelievable! And I lost about 20 pounds eating like a maniac! It was an eye opener! It seems Europeans don't have as much interest in our types of overprocessed under flavored "foods." Excuse the rant, I hope I have not offended anyone, but I am really mad about hidden carbs and sugars!! ![]()

I noticed all the products. Of course I fell asleep last night watching it. It's on in the Chicago area twice a day. But I missed both of them. Guess I didn't miss much.

I agree with you completely. I spent 2 weeks in Germany last year and was in heaven. Europeans are so much more conscious of what they eat and their government is not as willing to capitulate for the almighty dollar. They are the same way with their skin care products too. It was very refreshing.

Actually, I was a little annoyed with Oprah yesterday too. Going on and on about 8 Continents stealing her smoothie recipe and her not getting a cut, the constant interrupting, the snide (as I perceived it) comments. It was not one of her best shows IMO.
