Steak questions...
Which is the best steak to broil?
What is considered a good price per pound for Ribeye, T-bone and Porterhouse? We have Albertson's, Winn-Dixie, Wal-mart and Publix. Where do you think has the best steaks? Thanks |

I have never broiled a steak...I sear it on the stove top and finish it in the oven. I'm also not sure of a good price per pound, I usually buy them on sale.
BUT, I wanted to say I love Publix for steaks or any meat. I buy other groceries from the stores you mentioned but always Publix for the meat. |

I used to shop Publix for meats too, usually very good both in price and quality.
None here in Kentucky, so I shop Kroger for meat, ribeyes are usually $8.99/lb but on sale for $6/lb... which is why I usually buy Chuckeyes for $3.99/lb when I can. I never broil meat. Not against it, just never have. |

Prices in NC are similar to Looweewoo's area. I don't broil steaks but rather make them on the grill. Prefer ribeyes but I don't eat much steak. My favorite cut of beef is chuck roast/pot roast. Cheaper too.

Just wish I could get my smoke alarms to stop going off every time! ![]() Not sure about prices OP. everything here is so expensive.. I live too close to the Disney main gate. but a ribyeye IMO is the most juicy and prob. best if you can't cook on a grill. Last edited by daisyHair; 03-15-2010 at 11:19 AM.. |

I typically see what's on sale at Publix and Sweetbay (meat-wise) and do my plans based on that. Besides, their angus is yummmy. |

![]() I use the most marbled steak I can find (usually from the front end of the cow: ribeyes, etc), heat my skillet very hot while rubbing in salt and pepper with a little grapeseed oil. I sear it on one side for about 30 seconds, turn it and lower the heat. Sear/cook for one minute then turn to finish the other side at the lower heat for a few minutes, maybe turning again if necessary. Set aside for just a few minutes, then eat with a knife and fork! Sometimes I will put butter on it, that's really good! |

My husband makes the steak around here and he makes a really good ribeye. That seems to be the best one that I tasted so far. He sears it on both sides in a cast iron pan and then puts the cast iron pan in the oven for about ten minutes. I'm not sure if you call that broiling but I think it's on the top shelf of the oven at a high temperature.
As for price, he only buys the ribeye that is on sale. He goes to Safeway or Albertsons in the morning when they are marking down meat and usually gets the ribeye for up to 50% off. If it's not on clearance then he doesn't buy it. He usually makes out really good on sale meat every week.

And, it should be room temperature before cooking. A good quality cut of beef will taste amazing no matter how it is prepared. Most of the time I just grill them and season with salt. Last edited by nolcjunk; 03-15-2010 at 12:02 PM.. |

Ya.. It's not fair but I guess if I would just drive an extra half hour I would be better at saving some money! They just built a new Walmart North on 27 almost to Clermont.. but I don't like Walmart enough to drive that far! The one right off of 27 and 192 is right in my back yard. |

Yes us too (the method). Since I bought this to tenderize meat, I don't worry about the cut as much as the thickness...at least an inch, up to 2 inches. ![]() ![]() We just use this in at least three or four directions on each side of each steak and they are tender (these little knives are SHARP). If you like to marinade steak, these are wonderful as they open up little passages for the marinade. The steak looks the same after it's punctured, but boy they are tender...especially when cooked at some degree of medium. Well done are rarely tender no matter what you do to them...
