WOE: Dr. Richard K. Bernstein & Protein Power
Start Date: March 17, 2009-finally found right lc plan for me

I just started march 17, 2009 doing combination of Dr. Bernstein and protein power (I have to check my blood sugar frequently per Dr. Bernstein). I have lost 12 pounds so far.
Protein Power book helped me a lot! I just finished it recently. |

Hi Free and others, I am a high fat, low carb, moderate protein diet called Eat Fat Get Thin. It is 65% fat, 20% protein ans 15% carb. However, I am finding that I am doing much better on a 60/30/10 which is close to PP. It isn't the reduction in carbs. It is the increase in protein that my body likes. I try to keep my protein right around 100 grams and try not to go over. I am not familiar with Dr Bernstein although the name is familiar.

Hi Everyone!
I hope that there will be more traffic here soon! I successfully used PP to get within 15 lb of goal a few years ago, but ended up ruining it! I decided to get back on track! I LOVE PP and have four of the books. Great recipes! I say I am doing PP-ish because I have to make a couple of adjustments... I have never had kidney problems, but last time around, I did Atkins first, then PP, and had kidney stones. I don't think that I drank enough water, either. I have to up the carb count a little to keep myself out of ketosis (I eat about 50 a day). I also make sure I'm eating enough protein, but eat a little less than PP recommends (again, the kidney stone thing). Because of this, I FIT DAY and keep an eye on my calories. I find that I feel really good on the plan...energy soars (which I can't wait for this time around). Looking forward to meeting fellow PP'ers! |

Fenella, I am waiting for my book but on the protein thing, it's 1 gram per pound of LEAN body mass. My lean body mass is about 105 pounds so 105 grams?

I think that's about right if you are very active...I loaned my book to someone, and the 30 day book doesn't have it in there. I think it is .6 per pound of LBM for inactive people, 1 for very active people, and there were other breakdowns in between.

I've been on PP since 1/15/09.............have gone from 235-240 or so down to 207 this morning. I try to follow the plan, eat enough protein and so far so good...the first 20 were easy...it's been a slow drop since then.
I will cheat every once in a while for ice cream with the kids or alcohol on a weekedn night but limit it to one instance and then back to induction levels. |

Ship, what kind of percentages are you eating? How much protein per day? Were you low carb before PP?
Disappointed in the 30 LC Solution because they really didn't go into how much protein you should be eating. They call it s/m/l/xl and you had to decipher from that how much protein per day. |

That's just the "for people who just want to know what to eat book"
Protein Power and PPLP go into a LOT of science (more than Atkins, the Zone, etc.) I find the 30 day book has the best recipes, though. |

I don't really worry about percentages....i try to keep my carbs below 30 for the day.....basically none at breakfast (meat, eggs cheese) and then a small amount with lunch and dinner...mostly in the form of vegetables. I shoot for 100 grams of protein a day. I basically eat as much as i want....just the right stuff...which i am sure is why my rate of loss has slowed....but i am in upstate new york so it has been tough to exercise outdoors (which i prefer to the gym) so i am hoping to jumpstart my loss again. |

I'm trying to do PPLP. I am a nursing mom, and I take drugs to keep up my milk supply which make me really hungry, so I find that I need more protein than the book says, but as long as I'm careful with my carbs (which I haven't been for the past 2 weeks, Easter was bad for me) I can still lose weight. My goal is 40 carbs/day or less. And 40+ grams of protein for each meal. My dh is doing it with me. I love it!
