Atkins or PP: Which controls hunger best?
I don't really know too much about Protein Power but from what I've just read here, I'm definitely interested. My big problem is hunger! I don't really find that fat fills me up like it does for most people. I've been adding extra butter, sour cream and cream cheese to just about everything I cook and I'm still sooo hungry 2-3 hours after I eat. I don't eat a lot of meat, although I do get quite a bit of protein from cheese and eggs. I've never tried any kind of protein powder. I'm probably only getting 1/2 of the protein that PP would require (if that).
Do you think the extra protein helps control your hunger? When I stick to Atkins and eat enough so that I'm not hungry, I'm eating over 2000 calories and not losing an ounce. I've really fallen off the wagon this past month and I'm ready to get back to healthy eating. The extra fat is great for some people but for me it just seems to be causing me to eat way too many calories. I'll check out the local library this week and see if they have the book....Thanks in advance for your input! ![]() |

How many carbs are you eating with each meal? Are you amenable to eating more meat or eggs?
My husband and I just started the Protein Power way of eating on 1/1, and I did Atkins for quite some time a few years back. I do think that all of the protein fills me up and keeps me full, but only when I eat it with fat and carbs. Last time I had a protein shake (with 1tbsp heavy cream added) I was hungry within a couple of hours. But this morning I had the same protein shake (with 1/4 cup whole milk and 1tsp flaxseed oil) and 1/2 cup strawberries, and I wasn't hungry for about 4 hours. I'm averaging around 1500 calories/day, with 57% from fat, 37% from protein, and 6% from carbs (average of 25 effective carbs/day). Now, my husband doesn't seem to be so lucky with getting/staying full. He tends to eat his food super-fast (he's a firefighter, I think it's part of the job!) and I think that might be part of the problem. He is usually done with his entire meal before I even eat 1/4 of mine. He also tends to skip meals (bad, I know) and I think that contributes to the problem. I did find that the times he does get full and stays full for a few hours have been after eating eggs with meat and cheese with some carbs (strawberries or blueberries usually).

Thanks, Chrissy.....I think I'm going to get some protein powder and see how I do with protein shakes for breakfast. I'll make sure to add some full-fat milk as you suggested. I don't have any flax oil but I do have coconut oil. I'm going to see if my local library has Protein Power.....
It looks like this is your first post. Welcome! This is a great place to come for support.... ![]() |

Thanks for the welcome
I've been lurking for some time, and finally decided to join in with the fun!If you can find The 30-Day Low-Carb Diet Solution by the Eades I highly recommend it. It makes the plan so simple! I did read Protein Power and Protein Power Life Plan as well, but 30-Day book really simplifies everything. |

For what it's worth-I am an Atkins Forever person, but it works best for me combined with Protein Power, inasmuch if I get the 3 servings of protein, I seem to fill up and not need so much total food-I still eat the fat and keep the carbs way down, but if I just do that, and don't eat enough protein, I don't lose.
We are all different. |

Hey everybody -- I 've always felt like I eat more junk and processed foods on atkins than I do on Protein Power. Less nitrites and the like. I eat pretty cleanly on Protein Power if I stay honest. I not only feel fuller, but I feel stronger.

8 days in and I feel great. Still hungry feeling but it definitely feels like I can control it. It's like hunger but with less of the discomfort....and some mild lightheadedness which is not bad really. |

I still use the zero carb protein shakes-1 in am with the pills, vits, etc. and one in evening if last meal has worn off and I need to hush the wolf howling. The am shake usually only lasts a couple hours. Soooo most of my real food eating is between 10 am and 5 pm, and usually only one or two Atkins type meals, as low in carb and as close to PP as I can. Seems to work for me.

Nitenurse,
Where do you purchase zero carb shakes? I assume they are whey protein. when I add fiber like fibersmart, they hold me for atleast 4 hours. |

I get the zero carb from Netrition, the sponsor of this site. It's expensive, but it's a huge jar of it, and it lasts a month or two.

Yeah, I find that I do better on a Protein Power type plan than Atkins. Atkins is way too low in fiber and carbs for me. The first time I did Atkins I got severe diarrhea from lack of fiber and my gall bladder went nutsy from too much fat.
You just have to find what works for you. I like to do a leaner protein plan than most because I feel better on it. I still feel full though. I eat 6 small meals a day. Thank God I don't have any health issues so I tend to do the higher carb (55 grams a day) and I also lift weights so I need the extra energy that the carbs provide. I try not to eat any processed foods though. Just meat, eggs, low sugar fruits, lots of veggies, and nuts. I do almost no dairy at all because of sinus problems. ![]()
