What is the difference between Atkins and Protein Power?

Does anyone know? Just curious.

Protein Power allows more carbs per day than Atkins and there is more of an emphasis on protein. You're supposed to eat a minimum amount of protein per meal and per day. They allow a lot more fruit and some veggies that aren't usually eaten in the early stages of Atkins.

Even if you don't decide to follow their plan, I suggest reading their book. I learned a lot about low carbing, health and nutrition in general. The Eades really know their stuff.

I have the PP book and found it quite interesting. I still follow Atkins pretty much, but at LindaSue says - the Eades know their stuff and have lots of useful information. I particularly liked their TV cooking show, Low Carb CookWorx - last I heard from Dr. Mary Dan, they were picked up for some new shows which should start airing early next year.

I particularly like that Mary Dan is so schooled in anthropology and that Michael is always willing to change his opinion based on his research - i.e., he no longer recommends soy products or canola oils based on his research into those products.

It's worth picking up one of their books to read!

Another difference is that Protein Power doesn't emphasize ketosis. They explain what it is, but there's no suggestion to test your levels. PP concentrates more on overall health. The weight-loss just happens naturally as a nice side-effect. It also recommends going no more than 4 hours between meals to keep your metabolism up. I eat the 3 standard meals plus a mid-morning and -afternoon snack.
I chose PP because it's far less restrictive than Atkins so you don't feel deprived. I've been eating things like fruit (berries) and yogurt from day one. It's sort of like starting Atkins in a lower-carb OWL stage (you begin PP at 30g net carbs/day).
And I agree with LindaSue...the PP books really explain the science of why LC works.

I agree that the Eades' are great sources of information of the why's and how's of low-carbing. I particularly love their blogs. Here's a link to Dr. Michael's Eades' blog. You can get to his wife's through a link there.
http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/?cat=1. Not everything he comments on is low-carb related, but if you browse through the archives, you'll find plenty of fascinating information.

Hi You mention that the Eades had a TV cooking show? What channel/station are they on? I would love to check them out.

Thank you.

The last I heard, it was on the digital PBS station. You have to have premium digital cable to pick up the show.

What I learned from the PP was AMAZING! The chapter on cholesterol STILL has me reeling with anger about what is purported on the news on a daily basis! Plus the book explains why cholesterol is so important.

Also the information on the insulin response is great! It really opened my eyes

Thanks for the replies! My mom gave me the book a long time ago but I passed it on to someone else after I found Atkins.

I was reading their blog on Intermittent Fasting and it was very interesting. I like that they experimented on themselves with Intermittent Fasting first and then brought the news of how it worked to the people who look at their blog.
