Stephanie, I really like protein shakes for quick snacks or after workout boost. I have tried using them as a meal, and end up hungry after a couple hours.
I found out that whey is what is considered a fast digesting protein (probably what makes it great as post workout fuel). For me, it doesn't stick around long enough to get me to the next meal without a good sized snack. The addition of eggs may make a difference, though. I can't bring myself to add raw eggs, but I would be really interested to know if it worked for you! I had scrambled eggs with veggies and cheese. That is a breakfast I always feel satisfied after eating. Oh, and the lessened appetitie IS wonderful, but don't forget to eat your minimum requirement of protein for the day!!!!

Hi ladies,
Protein power has been very good to me this week. I feel stronger at the end of the day -- not so weak and exhausted. I love a good protein shake. I use 1 scoop choc. designer whey, 1 cup of choc. Soy Slender, 1 Tablespoon of Peanut Butter. It adds up to 28g. of protein. It's delish! About saving or not saving your carbs -- the only important thing that I know for myself is that I have to eat protein when I eat the carbs to balance the Glycemic Index. Otherwise my blood sugar will be a mess. But that's just me. Have a powerful day!

Peachy, that recipe sounds yummy! Do you think it would be possible to do 2 scoops of chocolate whey since I don't do soy?

The chocolate/peanut butter sounds really yummy to me, too! But, since I dont do soy, either, I am going to try it with just my whey isolate.
I have tried a few frozen strawberries and a couple tablespoons of sour cream in a vanilla shake, for a strawberry cheesecake like flavor. That tasted pretty good, too. I'm like you, Peachy. I can not eat carbs alone! Last edited by Luvmykidz; 08-23-2006 at 05:01 PM.. |

One of my favorite breakfasts is a strawberry smoothie: 1 cup yogurt 1 cup frozen strawberries 1 scoop vanilla whey powder 1 Tbsp. flaxseed meal (optional) 1 Tbsp. coconut oil (optional) This makes about 2.5 cups, and I slurp down 2 cups of it. I'm thinking about adding in a little bit of spinach, since I've heard you don't really taste it. When I mentioned it to my dh though, he looked at me like I was insane. ![]() |

I will have to try your recipe, rbm. I have been seriously considering yogurt as a regular item.
The cream cheese might work if it was soft before adding....I think it would end up clumpy if it was added cold. If you try it, let me know what you think! I have been experimenting with protein 'mousse', as an alternative to shakes, because sometimes I like to use a spoon. I have been dissolving 1 tablespoon of plain gelatin in about 1/2 cup of the liquid and adding it to my blender at the beginning--then after adding all the rest of the ingr--flavors and p.powder so there is about 1 cup of ingredients, then, I add about a cup of ice and grind it on high speed. It whips up pretty fluffy, and gels in the fridge. |

Today is day #3 for of me of Protein Power and I have not deviated or cheated at all. I have ten more pages to go of Protein Power and then am going to read Protein Power Life Plan.
Heather, I use one scoop of designer whey protein powder (chocolate) two raw eggs, 1/2 cup of half and half and water. Yesterday, it filled me up for about five and a half hours. I'm having the same thing today and it's really good. Need to run...have a wonderdul day everyone! ![]() |

Stephanie, if I could get past the raw eggs, I would be very tempted to try it.....I actually make something very similar, but without the eggs-that is probably why it doesnt stick with me, too.
Oh, if you are using whole, raw eggs, you might want to consider taking a biotin supp. because raw egg white binds biotin, so you don't absorb it. |

Heather, I have used Eggbeaters in a protein shake before.
I feel ok using them, because they are pasteurized. I know that regular raw eggs are probably ok, but I'm like you, I'd have a hard time mentally getting past it! |

Thanks, Strawberry, I may have to pick up some next time I am in town. I have never used them before--Are they just eggs? Do they contain a measurable amount of carbs?
I wonder if it is possible to make an egg nog flavored shake with egg beaters and vanilla whey powder and a bit of nutmeg. |

Yikes. Did I just take a trip to the honey tree.
It is my daughter's first day of kindergarten. My last baby. She got on the bus and was gone. I cried like a baby. Then I went to breakfast with my husband and ate an apple pancake. Now I feel all jittery. I could only eat half of it. It was too sweet. I usually eat the whole darn thing. I honestly don't know if I will do that again which is so funny because it used to be one of my very favorite things. I guess my tastes are changing. Now I'll have to pay for that on the scale. Ugh! |

Peachy,
I am not looking forward to letting any of my little ones go. I homeschool, though, so I am around my kids almost constantly. And if I have to go out for more than a couple hours without the troop, I feel positively stripped. I am so used to carrying a toddler on my hip or correcting older kids, or just having constant activity.....Half of an apple pancake is probably not going to be much of a problem, in the long term. If you ate it alone, I can totally see why it would give you trouble. I am going to say this quietly, because I don't want those of opposing opinion to overhear and get mad at me-- but, I think the guilt of having 'cheated' often does more damage than the act of 'cheating'. You even said yourself, you learned from the experience. I call that success, even if you had to learn the hard way. PP allows for this sort of thing. If I had been in your shoes, I would do my best to estimate the carb load of the pancake, subtract it from my daily total, and just go on. No guilt. Be sure to drink plenty of water and get enough protein. The scale *might* go up a bit, but not necessarily. Even if it does, it is most likely just water weight from having eaten the carbs, and should disappear after a day or two of clean eating. ![]() |

It is so discouraging for me to find out someone has "blown it" and is beating herself up because one bite (or even one serving) of some forbidden food is "the kiss of death" (no matter which plan she is on). I feel that sort of thinking is just setting the dieter up for failure. PP is flexible, forgiving, and very practical as a method for getting a person to re-think and re-establish a healthy WOE for themself...... And the point of PP is to lose fat (as opposed to raw weight), while retaining as much lean body mass as possible. I am so glad I took the Eades' advice and started weekly measurements from the beginning. I had a 3 week stretch when the scale did not show much movement at all--Like 1.5 pounds for the entire time. But, I was measuring weekly, and saw fractions of inches coming off. This is what I want anyway, so I decided to be patient with the scale---which is now moving down fairly steadily. I have a pair of jeans I am working toward being to wear comfortably.... You might consider the size method of tracking your progress if you are not already doing so. It can make a huge difference in your perception of progress ![]() |

Supps only work if you are deficient in the first place. I just figured I would pass on the info I learned about raw egg whites, because if you eat very many of them, you will still want to supplement to prevent a deficiency from occuring.. Cooking or pasteurizing will neutralize the binder. Also, I think egg yolks may contain biotin, so you might be okay eating the whole egg raw. I don't know about that. So, are you having trouble with hair or fingernail health? I have noticed a few posts concering this, but most people seem to be improved on LC. It does take a few months, though, as the hair and fingernails that you already see are 'dead' cells and will not be affected by the supplementation..It is the new growth that will show the difference. ![]() |

Unfortunately, I have been a nail-biter for most of my life and don't consider myself a nervous person. It's just a bad habit. I did leave them alone for a while and they grew, but they are very thin and tear easily. I think I may lay off putting two raw eggs in my shakes and just use an extra scoop of protein powder. I usually have two soft-boiled eggs for breakfast during the week (because I'm not a cook, but my hubby is ) and think I may alternate with the shakes. I just don't know how good the raw eggs are for me.Today, I had my shake at 8am and didn't eat until 2:30. I just wasn't hungry. ![]() On Fridays, someone at my job usually brings in donuts - today they had Cinnabons and bagels on the desk right behind mine. It didn't appeal to me at all and I was watching all the big heavy women stuff their faces. ![]()

Eggbeaters are just eggs, mainly the whites, with the fat and cholesterol part removed. 1/4 cup (equivalent to one egg) has 30 cals, 0g fat, 1g carb, and 6g protein. But they add a little yellow color back and some vitamins back to make it more like whole eggs, in terms of the texture when cooked. Normally, I use regular eggs, because I think the yolks are healthy and would rather use completely natural foods... but these aren't a bad substitute when I need to use raw eggs, like in Caesar salad dressing or a shake. I've never tried using them for an eggnog flavor.. but I bet that would work! To me, they give the shake a rich "french vanilla" flavor, when I use them with vanilla extract. Here's the ingredient list: INGREDIENTS: Egg whites (99%), less than 1%: Natural flavor, color (includes beta carotene), spices, salt, onion powder, vegetable gums (xanthan gum, guar gum). Vitamins and Minerals: Calcium sulfate, iron (ferric phosphate), vitamin E (alpha tocopherol acetate), zinc sulfate, calcium pantothenate, vitamin B12, vitami nB2 (riboflavin), vitamin B1 (thiamine mononitrate), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), folic acid, biotin, vitamin D3. |

Good job, Stephanie, avoiding the donuts!
StrawberryThank you for the information. I realized after I posted, that I have a tub of egg white powder in my pantry. I will just add a scoop of that. Oh, and I think using the raw egg yolks are fine, as long as you are using clean eggs--it was just the white that interferes with biotin absorbtion. |

Happy Birthday to YOU! I hope you really enjoy your day......Indulge wisely Due to some things I can't control, I will probably be limiting my internet time to weekends for several months. Happy Birthday Stephanie!!! It's my sister-in-law's b-day also.
I think I need to buy the PP book. It seems like it's a more reasonable plan for me. |
