Protein Power & Dana Carpender's Books

I thought I'd ask two questions in the same thread. First of all, is anyone familiar with Protein Power? I just went out today and bought "The Protein Power Life Plan." I also have South Beach and Atkins books.

Also, I just bought and started reading Dana Carpender's "How I Gave Up My Lowfat Diet and lost 40 Pounds," and I ordered her "500 LowCarb Recipes" book. Because I did Weight Watchers three years ago, lost 31 pounds in six months and felt good, I've been having a hard time accepting the fact that my body has changed and I am better off doing low carb. Well, I have finally accepted it and am educating myself as much as possible.

Hi Stephanie,

I too, used to be on WW and lost 75 lbs. doing it, lowfat style and then regained it all as I developed an insulin resistance disorder. Now, I'm doing a LC lifestyle to relose it all again & feel tremendously better this time around as this is what's best for my overall health, not just my weight. I have ready EVERY LC book out there, it seems...and I have to say "Protein Power" is one of the BEST resources out there! It's pretty scientific, which intimidates some people, but I loved reading that level of insight as to why/how LC works for so many! I hope you find it as insightful as I did...these are truly brilliant people!

Hi Amy,
Thank you for the reply and the info on Protein Power. I am not following any particular plan - just low carb. For dinner tonight, I had two fried eggs and two chicken sausages. Not only is it delicious, but very filling and I'm satisfied on low carb with less food than I ever was with low fat.

I found that the ease of following the South Beach plan, coupled with the science of low carbing found in Protein Power is a winning combination for our family. I refer to both books often.

We use the recipe ideas in the 500 recipes book often; dd made the pumpkin pie with pecan crust for Thanksgiving. It was better than the "real" one. I think your money was well spent.

I read all the time about this WOE and others to solidify my LC decision. Yes, I've bought all her books but I've also copied recipes from the recipe room or other locations - George Stella's, Blaine's - and put them into a binder. I find that I use those more than the actually cookbooks because it's filled with recipes that I want and not what other people publish.

I started on the Protein Power Plan and remain on it to this day. I have had great success with it. I'm a slow loser but that's okay, as long as I'm steadily losing. I post my daily menu on the Golden Years forum, stop in and check it out.

Thank you Bill. I have seen you post before and have noticed that you're on the Protein Power. Thanks for the info!

I think the original Protein Power book is a better book than Protein Power Life Plan. It has great info in it that I refer to often, so I recommend getting it as well. Life Plan, though good, doesn't have all the info PP has.

Stephanie - I've read Protein Power, and I think it's a great plan. You're doing the right thing by getting different books and learning about different low carb programs. I would suggest you pick a plan and follow it though. Some people have success just doing their own version of low carb, but most need more structure.

You're right the Protein Power Plan book that I use is the 1996 version. To anyone who is just beginning the PP plan it can be a little intimidating. Because there are formulas, charts and such to figure dietary needs as far as protein requirement goes. Your protein needs are based on lean body mass.
It's really not that difficult and there is step by step instructions in the book.

Thanks everyone. I bought the Protein Power book to add with the Protein Power Life Plan. I'm learning more and more than low carb is the way to go.
