I followed it several years ago. It did wonders for me, but it was the first plan I tried. I don't think there is much difference between protein power and the new Atkins, but I'm not certain.
There is a lot of good explanatory stuff in the protein power book, but it's old. If you want explanatory/rationale, Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It by Gary Taubes is great, and very recent. He is not peddling any certain plan, but there is a basic plan in that book (No Sugar, No Starch, which you can also find free on the Internet/Youtube).
