I'm 51 and have lost 68 pounds in the past 2 years so I consider myself a success story. This way of life took a decision on my part. I didn't want to be fat miserable and sick anymore. Obesity and age is a recipe for health disaster! Once I made the decision to get healthy and lose weight, I discoverd that my problem was sugar and carbs and solution to my problem would be to eleminate them from my diet. I armed myself with the facts and made a committment to make low carbing a way of life. I think the the key to my success is I never cheat with illegal foods because I know me and I know where "just one bite" will take me....so I simply don't go there. I don't feel a bit deprived and I don't miss any of the junk I used to think I couldn't live without. I constantly try new recipes so I never get bored with the food. In fact I love the food choices I have today! And the really great thing is I'm never, ever hungry. Not being a slave to food anymore is an awesome feeling! The other things that have been important to me and my success is never leaving food to chance. I never ever put myself in a position where I won't have something to eat and be so starved that I might be tempted to eat something illegal. I drag a "bag of food" with me where ever I go. This used to crack up my dh and friends and family! The other things I have found essential are making sure I drinkl enough water and exercise.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you!

I'm 54 and have lost 35 pounds since 8/02. I'm near my goal now and want to maintain within a 5 pound range forever. I think the main challenge is that you have to plan what you will eat. You can't just stop at the Quick Trip and pick up a soda and snack when you are hungry. I carry a cooler in my car because I'm on the road at lot and have learned to prepare food the night before that I will eat during the workday. Family and friends have been totally supportive, but I didn't do this for them, I did it for me. I feel so much better that a little extra work is well worth it. Planning ahead for food, exercise and water is the key to success.

I'm 53 and have been lowcarbing for over a year and have lost
40 lbs...

The secret to my success is drinking water...to fill me up,
and cooking. I love to cook and try new recipes all the time.
So many veggies, so little time...My dh has lost 48 lbs. so
we are in this together, which really helps.

I think I only "cheated" once..at my dd's wedding I had wedding
cake and the potato that came with the meal. The rest of
the time, I have kept my carbs in check and never eat sugar,
white things, etc...

Right now I'm tweaking my fats/protein percentages to find
out what's best for me. My weightloss has slowed way down,
but I only have about 20 more lbs. to go.

I look at the "bad" carbs as poison..and think if I eat this..then
it will all go to fat..and that is something I DO NOT want to do.

Good luck.

Just turned 52, been lowcarbing for almost two years and and I have lost 109 pounds. I followed Atkins nutrition for over a year and a half and then stalled for lmost four months-just could no longer seem to lose anything. I deceided to try LFL nutrition and that is how I got to my goal weight. I also workout between 5 and 6 times a week-have completed a BFL challenge and am in the middle of a Body RX challenge right now. I really believe that weight training is the BEST way to reshape your body and is VERY important as we get older. Check out the BFL board here and you will be amazed at the transformations that the folks there have made

I'm 45, I've lost a net 40 pounds in the past year. Should be more, but I went crazy during the holidays. Learned my lesson!
Drink your water and take your vitamins. If you haven't been able to do it because of sugar, then you're probably a carboholic. You may need to stay away from anything sweet, even the sugar-free candies and drinks. Good luck!

I'm 52...today is my birthday! I started the LC WOE 3 1/2 years ago after I had quit smoking and gained over 20 pounds. I lost that in the first 4 months and have maintained ever since.
I have no probelm staying on this WOE because there are so many great things to eat. Others were right...plan ahead, stay off the sugar and other illegal stuff.
It does help if you like to cook, because there are not many "fast food" choices available...like the frozen dinners etc.
Find an exercise program you like and will actually do, drink your water, tune into to these boards for inspiration and just decide that you can do this and then DO NOT sabatoge yourself!
There are a few times when I am stuck in a situation where I have to eat some things I normallywould not. For instance, we had dinner with friends last night. The main course (cassoulet) had white beans in it. I couldn't very well pick around them! so I ate a small portion, enjoyed the salad, skipped the bread and ate only a few small bites of the dessert. I would not have done this on induction, but after over 3 years I find that if this happens on rare occassions, it won't kill me and I go back to induction again for a couple days.
hang in there..we are with you!!

Thank you all for replying! I'm 50yrs old, about to be 51yrs old in April. I have been a "big girl" all of my life, and there is probably not one diet out there that I haven't tried! Even had my stomach stapled...lost 123lbs, but here I am today with just about all of that back!

I'm totally addicted to starchy carbs....sugar isn't and never has been a problem for me. I could eat a good loaf of bread a day if I set my mind to it. Lately, it's been Panera Bread...
I just got through grilling a bunch of chicken breasts for the week ahead...got the bread out of the house, and will climb back up in the wagon in the morning..

I hope that others will respond to this thread, as I said before, I think it will help those of us who are ready to throw up their hands and quit!

Thanks again, and just knowing that y'all are here to help means more than you will know!

I'm almost 49yrs. old, have Hashimoto's hypothyroid, and two other autoimmune diseases. I am going back to school very soon, and used to be a pyrotechnician, although I am changing careers now.

I just couldn't keep the weight off on a lowfat diet, and I was always so "whooped" by the hunger and lack of food!! My endocrinologist is the one who told me he thought I would get better balance in my life, and with my weight. I no longer take blood pressure meds, or glucophage. I do take my thyroid meds, but, as most of us find out, that doesn't really help without really trying!!

teri f----tooo funny!! I just had to show that comment about the "bag of food" you drag around to my friend. She was complaining that I do it to be "rude", and a food snob!! Not so....I just will not put this weight back on. Oh yeah, when I got married for the second (and last) time 26 yrs. ago, I weighed 265, I started lowcarbing almost two years ago at the weight of 230, and as of this morning I weighed in at 134.

You will gain success through sticking to the WOE. It really does work, and one of the only lifestyle changes that has worked for me. Welcome back, too and give it a good try again---stay with it for life. Pam

I'm 53 and have been low carbing for over four years. Took me a year to lose 55 pounds and since then I have been successfully maintaining. This WOE has been a godsend for me because, not only have I lost the weight (and kept it off) but my blood lipid numbers improved dramatically.

Hi
I'm 58, and have been Maintaining since August of 2001. I have Hypothyroidizm, and losing was still possible with LCing. I did not follow a particular plan, I just educated myself with all the low carb info I could find, and decided simply that High Carbs were bad so I avoided them.
My Doctor is very happy (as am I ) with my great Bloodwork results, and this WOE becomes easier every day, like second nature to me.
The main thing that has helped me to easily stay on the LC trail is learning how to cook with alternative LC ingredients, and use lots of variety, so my food is never boring..but always tastey and satisfying.

I'll be 46 this month. I have been low-carbing for 2 of the past 3 years. I lost approx. 40 lbs the first time, then tried to maintain, but at the same time was undergoing a major life change.. new job, etc., and ultimately 'fell off the wagon' and gained about 18 lbs back. Restarted this time last year, and have lost about 30 lbs so far, for a total of 50 lbs down from my starting weight ... with another 15 to goal. I lose very slowly this time, but that is ok, because for me, my 'time away' convinced me that I feel better, eat better, and am much healthier when I low carb. It has now become just my way of life, my way of eating. I don't even see it as a diet. I don't worry that my loss is slow, my weight keeps going down, and I look better than I have in 15 years, so I am ok with that, and know the rest will come off in its own time.

I think what has made the difference for me is deciding this is how I plan to eat from now on.. not a diet, but a way of life. So, I ask myself what can I eat? What can I cook? How can I live this way? And I find recipes, cookbooks, etc. I try things. Variety. I hate being bored, and that goes for food! Also, I read everything about low carbing. I read posts on this board everyday. I read the books. I read other sites. I keep up with the research, so I know why I am choosing to eat this way, when most people think this is crazy.

Anyway, that is my success story!

Linda

I like this thread - hearing other people's success stories really helps make me more determined too!

I'm 53, diabetic and my top weight was 320 pounds. I joined WWs years ago and managed to get to 250. After I divorced five years ago I met and married my wonderful DH of today - he's a vegetarian and it doesn't matter to him what I weigh. But, I wanted to see what it would be like to feel NORMAL as far as weight. I am determined to find out! I started Atkins on 3/1/02 and have lost slowly - but it's 41 pounds so far! I have 64 pounds to go, but this will always be my WOL.

I must add that I've gone from three diabetes meds to one Glucophage a day. My last A1C was 4.8 and the doctor was quite happy!

We can do this!!!

WOE: Lean for Life
I am 51 and have been low carbing for 20 year that's right 20! I started it for health reasons not because of weight. I just read a lot about insulin and thought Carb BAD Low insulin production GOOD! As I neared 50 my weight whent up anout 2-3kgs and I was unable to get it down in the usual manner, I switched to lean for life and that sorted out the few extra kilos. When I went back and had a good look and why the weight had come on I came to the realization that on Atkins I had gradually increased my calorie intake. And Calories do count! So Lean for life just reminded me that portions and calories matter! One of the long term plusses of this WOL is wonderful skin. Because of the (relative) high fat content and all that water, even at 51 there are almost no wrinkles (I think also a life time of stable weight helps) So I consider myself a success story even though I have not loss the amazing amount that people on this board have, I have maintained a stable weight with the help of this for over 20 years!

I'm 47 and have lost 55 pound since last May. I am at "goal". I decided I was not going to do this "lose weight / gain weight" cycle anymore and thru a friend found my way to low carbing. This has been the best "weight loss, getting healthy" journey I have ever had and I feel great! Eating this way now is my Way of life and there is no going back to the "old" ways. I don't want to be saying in another 5 or 10 years "geez, I need to lose weight" again! This is it for me! I eat tons of variety in my meats and vegies...but...just leave the refined carbs out of my diet! Best to all of you!

I'll be 49 in April and have also been LC'ing for 20 or so years (started with Dr. Stillman's plan). I naturally gravitate toward this way eating and don't have much of a taste for processed or high-carb foods.

All of my current weight gain has come from a medical condition (at one time weighing 230 pounds) which is now under control and have been on a downward sprial since starting 2/3/03.

My success with this lifestyle has been incorporating some sort of daily exercise, lots of water, and always asking myself the question "What are the consequences of eating this" if I am severly tempted.

I also agree that educating yourself by reading reliable articles on LC'ing, reaching out for support and surrounding yourself with people who are encouraging also contribute to one's success.

The feeling of control and power to direct my life is an additional by-product of this plan. AND, what keeps me on track is visualizing not the fat on the outside, but what is hanging around on the inside.

I'll be ugggggggggh! 50 this summer!

That's one of the reasons that I wanted to see if I could get a handle on my unhealthy lifestyle. My 6 month anniversary is this THURSDAY ... woohoo ... and I have lost about 65 pounds. I lurked here for the first 4 months and learned tons of stuff that helped me. I saw people struggling with losses & gains after starting this program or others. I made the committment to do induction as best as I could. It was tough, I was used to jamming about 500 carbs a day in my gut. Sometimes I felt so terrible after work that I just went to bed. I guess my saving grace was that (sorry ladies) like a lot of guys, I dropped some pounds and inches very quickly. I read on this BB about folks that would lose a bunch & then put it back on. I decided that I wanted to get some pounds off & get it over with. I way very true to this WOE & I still am. My only real cheats are extra veggies or nuts. I say forget about the bars and the packaged stuff, there are so many other great foods to have. Lately I'm trying to think of food more as fuel than as a treat or whatever. I've upped my water intake and that has helped. My advice is get at it, do it right, and start feeling better. The folks here will always help & support your efforts. This WOL has been a Godsend to me. I'll never go back to the way I used to eat. Good Luck. You can do it. Peace - Mark

Hi , I'm 56 and have lost 50 pounds and reached my goal in 5 months. I have stayed within 3-4 pounds each way of this since Sept '02. I plain don't cheat. When I overeat, it is always "legal low carb food" ie meat, good veggies, cheese etc. . I recently found Le Carb Ice cream which has about the same calories/fat/ carbs per serving as two servings of heavy cream in my coffee. Other than that, when hunger strikes - just go to the kitchen and create a low carb alternative to avoid cheating.
Good Luck...

I'll be 43 in April, but I felt like I was 75 about 16 months ago. Now I feel better than I have in 15 years.

I'll agree with everything Mark said. Jump in with both feet and never look back.

I will be 50 this October. I started atkins at Thanksgiving and have lost 15 pounds. I have another 10 to lose.
Doesn't sound like much, but I am only 4ft 11ins and at that height it is a lot!!
I know I can do better than I have been doing, I need to get back to the gym consistently and I need to drop the sf chocs.
But one thing I know from this is that once I reach goal I can maintain and have the treats!!!

I might be the oldest poster so far. Atkins is working great for me. As I will be 62 next Monday, I don't want to lose too rapidly, and the carb count lets me regulate how much I lose per week. Really love this WOL, and anyone who is told you can't lose after "a certain age" needs to visit this thread!

EDIT,

Hope we get some more posters...I know we're not the only "few" here?????
