I have been using Biotin for about six weeks. My eyelashes and hair hsve made a definite improvement. I believe that the hair loss was a result of my age (60), incorrect thyroid medication, and low carb dieting. I'm still on LC and my hair is thicker. Previously, I could see my scalp at the front and it was very upsetting. I have always had thick hair. I really didn't believe the Biotin would work so well, but it did!

How can you tell if you have new hair growth, or just broken hair?
I got my hair highlighted the beginning of November, and I keep seeing lots of short (some really short, some not so short) hairs sticking up... I tried to take a pic... not sure if you can see anything! I can't stand it! |

Yep... I can see it! Its hard to know if it is broken or new hair growth.. I know others said they see their new hair growth sticking up like that. If you are worried about broken hair you might want to try a leave in conditioner.. it will give your hair some moisture and help the hair to lie down better. You could also ask your hair dresser and see what they think and what products they recommend. I hope this helps.. |

I wonder if it was the biotin?
I've been taking biotin for about 4 or 5 months, although I never had any hair loss to speak of - I was taking it primarily for my fingernails which had seemed to be extremely weak and brittle.
However, I attempted to have my hair permed a little over a week ago. Well.... the back part of my head, the perm took just fine. However the front part - well, parts of the front had to be permed 2, 3 and 4 times (with ever increasing strengths of perming solution each time) before it finally took! Granted, the front at the temples is all gray, with lots of gray scattered throughout my head, and gray hair is more resistant to perming, but my stylist said she's never seen such strong hair. She said that most people, their hair would have just broken right off with all that processing, but mine doesn't even feel like it was permed. It certainly doesn't feel at all damaged, not even the amount you'd expect from the most gentle perm.

Well I was a bit of a skeptic at first but I'm turning into a believer. I started taking biotin about 4-6 weeks ago and for the first time last night after washing my hair there was hardly any fallen hair in my brush or only a few that I was able to pull out when it was wet and I combed it. Overall my hair definitely "feels" thicker and my eyelashes seem thicker as well.
Thanks you guys for posting this thread! |

I just wanted to post about how I've been using the Shampoo/Conditioner for about three weeks now and I can tell a huge difference. I was really starting to get worried about the hair loss because it's not really something that the men in my family experience and someone I work with noticed that I was getting a bald spot and after feeling so good with the weight loss, it just really got me down.
Well I picked up the shampoo and btw it stinks bad, lol, but I use it anyway. I can now towel dry my hair and not have tons of stray hair come out and I can no longer pull hair out of my scalp as I was able to do about a month ago. I can't say that it feels fuller yet, but I've only been using it for a short amout of time, but the fact that the hair loss has stopped makes me very happy. Thanks so much for this thread because I was always too shy to ask people about hair loss because as a man, it's hard to ask for directions, lol. |

The back part curled sufficiently with that one, but in the front, what at first looked like it had curled fell out before my hair was even dry. Looked like it hadn't been permed at all - no damage, nothing, just the usual slight wave that was always there. So she immediately used the same solution on the front again, figuring that the hair should already be softened by the first application of perming solution, and more likely to take the curl. Plus she was concerned about damaging it. She also used smaller perm rods than for the original perm. This time the one side appeared to take, but not the other side. So... she immediately got out the strongest perm solution in her arsenal, the one she reserves for women with completely gray hair, which is the most resistant to perming, and re-permed the side that had fallen flat, using the smaller rods again. This time there was a tiny bit of bend in the hair on that side. (These first 3 perms were done all inside a 3-1/2 hour period of time) But after 2 days, the entire front of my hair had once again fallen flat. At most, parts of it looked like it had been crimped... slightly. The rest looked like it had never been permed - and amazingly enough didn't even show any perm damage, not even on the part that had already been permed 3 times. It was as healthy looking as it had always been. So after contacting the perm specialist in NY again, she tried it once more on the entire front, following his advice to use a mid-strength perm, since they were both very concerned about damaging my hair to the point where it would just break off at the roots after being processed so much in such a short space of time. But they really needn't have worried - even the section that was processed 4 times doesn't look the least bit damaged. She used the smaller rods again. Anyhow, this perm expert had told her that after rinsing out the perm solution, to rub each perm rod with an ice cube to more fully "set" the perm, before letting it go through the resting and cooling at room temperature for several minutes, and then finally applying the neutralizer. This time it did finally take properly. The thing is, yes the most resistant portion of my hair was the totally gray streaks in the temple area, but the rest of the front of my hair didn't take multiple applications either, and although there is some gray in those areas, it's not nearly all gray, and really very similar in texture and percentage of gray as the back of my head, which took the first, most gentle perm very easily. I'd never had an experience like this before, my hair had always taken a perm very, very easily, just like the back did this time, which is why I wondered if anyone knew anything about such a "strong hair" effect from taking biotin. I'd been taking 5,000 mcg for a little more than 6 months when I had the perm(s) done, and my hair normally grows very quickly, so that was probably a good 4 inches of growth since I started taking the boitin, which is about the amount of hair length in the front. The main reason I started taking the biotin was for my fingernails, which although they grow pretty quickly, they seem to break off very easily. Between dishwashing, cold weather, and all the other stresses my fingernails were exposed to multiple times a day, they were always breaking off at the least little bump. They seem to be doing a bit better since starting the biotin, although I'm still waiting for some cracked areas to grow out enough to see if the rest of the nail is any stronger than usual. |

I started Biotin hoping it would improve my nails, which are soft and tend to tear and peel. I've been using the Super Biotin 5000 for two months and have seen no change in them. {{sigh}} I guess I'll have to add biotin to the list of things that seem to work for everybody except me:

I was just curious if you all were "losing" hair or your hair was breaking from damage and or hormonal changes??? In August/September of '07 I thought my hair was falling out. I was getting HUGE clumps of hair everytime I showered or combed it out. So much it looked like a small animal had crawled into my shower or was laying on my brush or on the floor. This went on for weeks.
I took a picture of it and sent it to my hairdressers phone and she called me back immediatley. I have hair down to my Butt. It's my "signature", ya know? Anyway, I took my bag of hair into her at the salon to anylize. She and her boss anylized it and had called in a specialist from the color company to look at it. I also came in for an "exam". They determined that it was NOT "falling" out. That would mean that the hair would have a root attached to it for it to truely be "falling" out. My hair was breaking from damage and most likely hormone changes in my body which is the number one factor for what we call hair loss . Hairloss would be determined by noticable bald spots at the scalp. They would have been able to run thier hands down my hair and get a handfull if it was falling out. I have none of that. My hair was extremely thick. I could only get a large hair tie wrapped around twice and that was tight. Now I can wrap the same hair tie around it 4 times . So my hair has thinned out ALOT! I am glad that it was not "falling" out. I have had my hair since about 1985 and I only get about 1-2 inches trimmed off a year so my hair is "old" and I color it, and I sit in the sun and swim in the summer for years and years over and over again so I really cannot be surprised that it's damaged. It breaks daily. Has split ends and middles. I only shampoo my hair 1-3 times a week unless I am going out or have an appointment. I purchased a deep conditioner that I leave in my hair after I wash it. I dont rinse it out and that has helped. I also have this spray that I use when I comb it out and it is the best thing I have ever used. My hair stylist got me hooked on it. I use it on my daughters hair also. If you are truely experiencing hairloss then you should be seen by your doctor and a dermatoligist and have your blodd work done from top to bottom and have a hormone panel performed by your OB. Malnutrition, hormones, and serious medical issues can make you have hairloss. Hair breakage can happen from a multitude of reasons and is most likely the cause for those enormous hairballs. I just wanted to share my story and experience with you. I thought the worst at first but am thankful that its not falling out. The breakage and damage is bad enough for me. I am going to try biotin. Fawn had reccommended I take the 1000's but now reading that some of you are taking 5000, even 10,000 I may have to re evaluate that. Here is what my hair looked liked in July 2007. I had to cut 6 inches off since then to slow down the breakage a bit. I hope this biotin can help me some with my hair. Good luck to everyone else.

If you all haven't seen it, Dr Mike Eades (Protein Power) had a post on his blog about hair loss here.
Seems that any time the body goes through the stress of losing a lot of weight very quickly, or a very low calorie/malnutrition phase, you will have hair loss, but then he goes on to explain why, and how it returns. I don't think the biotin hurts though. Quote:

Anyways, at first I did notice a difference, but still had to use Sally Hansen's "Hard as nails" to protect them. Now? I can't believe how strong my nails are, on their own. HUGE, difference. |

I'm still taking mine. I started because of a thread Cheri started FOREVER ago about her hairdresser visit. Every single night I take a 5000mcg one. I used to get it from Walgreens but found it cheaper at Wal Mart. I use it to thicken my hair. You can google it- I am sure there are many more benefits. I'll try to post some. I'm a google freak.

I also take 5,000 mg. daily and I am now finding I have to get my hair cut every 3 weeks instead of 5..... It's thicker than it use to be (I've always had thin/fine hair). Now that I'm not dying it anymore the silver has gotten curly..... I'd love to go back to my dark hair - but don't want it falling out like it did 7 years ago.
I hate the silver/grey two tone look. |
