I need help...long.
DGD #3 has not eaten any food or had anything to drink since Thursday. DDIL took DGD to Dr. on Monday. Dr sends DGD to hosp for a blood test. Hosp calls April within 1 hour to get her back to emergency room because her blood sugars is 40 and should be 70. Admits to hosp with IV with glucose water to up sugars, hoping that sugars coming back up will get her appetite back. No go. Send DGD to x-ray to see if there is a blockage. Negative. No temp. Ears, throat, sinus, etc clear and free from infection. All blood test come back normal. DGD can't even stand to look at food. They've tried M&M's. Chocolate. Pancakes with syrup. MRI was scheduled and results are normal. They were looking for tumor or something neurological. April asked Dr to check esophagus, (because DGS #1 had so much trouble) while she was out for the MRI. Negative again.
I suggested to DS to have a nurse come in with "medicine" like just plain ole maple syrup. Maybe that will give her a taste for food again. She is fiesty. Got some fight in her. Wants Momma and nothing else. Doesn’t scream though. We thought: Infected tooth, blockage some where, maybe she got a taste of something spoiled and that turns her off to any food, really so many things we were just brainstorming to figure this out. No fever, so that eliminates any infection. With the IV fluids blood sugars are normal. X-Rays show no blockage: upper or lower. Blood pressure is normal. We are waiting for blood cultures that should be ready for this morning. Only one thing that we have no explanation for. There are times that she is the perfect healthy child. Talks fine and we can understand everything; laughs with nurses and goes to the playroom and has a ball. At the snap of a finger she is the complete opposite. Listless, can't talk, covers her eyes, won't play and just sits on Momma with her head in her blanket. Waiting now for the blood results. Day 7 of no food. Not even the almighty M&M's. Last night she was transported to Children’s in Chicago. Examined by Dr’s there. We have a theory!! She tested for too many keotones in her urine. They gave her a superblast of sugar in the IV last night. Then they took her off the IV to see if the Keotones subside making her at least thirsty. DDIL and DS are exhausted. It's more painful to not know what is wrong. Just find something give it a dose of whatever and go home. It'd be wonderful if it would be that easy. Any suggestions gladly accepted. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? We are looking for the most miniscule of ideas from any where. I’ve exhausted WebMD *Slight sigh of relief but not really*

I know it sounds strange, but maybe a sensory problem? Ds was diagnosed with sensory integration disorder, and while 95% of the time he acts like a very normal child, when he goes into his sensory preservation mode he is so unlike himself. Maybe she tasted something, burned her mouth or throat on something and now is in sensory preservation mode and won't try again.

Sis: Great suggestion also. Thank you. I thought of something similar. Say if she get a bad tasting piece of bread for instance. I wouldn't want anything to eat either thinking it may taste like that icky bread. Going on the list too. Mi *feeling much better with massive suggestions.* Thank you all for even coming in to read. |

Wanted to also add, we that low carb know being in ketosis makes us lose our appetite, so the longer she's in ketosis, she probably won't want to eat. The Dr's shouldn't only focus on her ketone level (although it does need to be treated)the real question should be what caused her to get that way in the first place.

(((HUGS))) and
The only things I can think of: - Drainage to the stomach is a major appetite suppressant!!! My nephew won’t eat when his allergies are up. (although you would think the throat would be red.) - Possible a headache could cause this?? - Is everything coming out ok?? Constipation also makes you not hungry. - A virus? I hope they figure it out soon!!! ![]() |

I've had smells/odors turn off my appetite~ like a new air freshener or some perfume I've come in contact with while shopping~ sometimes it's difficult to get the smell out of my nose long after I'm not around it anymore. ~~~N |

Bless her little heart. The thing that struck me was her being one way and then snapping into another state. Mind you I know nothing but the first thing that popped into my head was autism.
I really hesitate to say even that since I seriously doubt that's it but it's the first thing that popped into my head and thought I'd just mention it anyway since you asked us to! Please let us know what's going on with her. ![]() |

Maybe migraines? My little sister started getting migraines at age 7 (though now she says she always had them but just thought it was normal/couldn't verbalize what was happening) and would lose her appetite and be listless and cover her eyes ect. When she didn't have a headache she was normal. She also has had MRIs ect and all have always been normal so that isn't really a diagnosis of migraines or not. When she was 15 they tried a new medication and she is almost migraine free now. She still gets headaches on occasion but nothing so diabling as she used to. She'll probably need the meds the rest of her life though. (ETA: They have never found a cause for this. Maybe hormonal, maybe a vascular issue, maybe a slight form of epilepsy... they just don't know)
Also have they checked/considered reflux? It could be a great number of foods are causing her to have reflux pain/symptoms. I don't know her age, but she may be too young to determine it is only certain foods and is just associating pain with eating. Hope they find a cause and can fix it asap. Hugs and prayers for all! Good Morning...
Day 8. No change. Still nothing to eat.
DGD is 3 years old. There is no change from last night. She did have a barium x-ray (?) last night around 8:30 to see if she has trouble swallowing. We are still waiting for results on that and for the Dr to come and tell DS what is next. Hollyoak: She has all 20 teeth. So nothing else to come in.Jai: She dosen't complain about her head. She only covers her eyes when a Dr or nurse comes in the room. She figures if she dosen't see them they aren't there. The rest of the time she's ok with light. Eyes are open when she's on Momma or Daddy's lap. I'm glad your little sister is better though. It's amazing what meds are available for headaches.Averyjenn: They are not ruling anything out. Psych and Pedi/Dental is scheduled or at least on the list.Nady: Her Mom is scent sensitive so there is minimal scent in the house. She does not go to day care so no problems there. So if anyone hears a whooping scream and it is coming from the heart of Chicago, that's me and I just have a scream ready if and when she starts to eat ANYTHING. Even the almighty M&M's. Mi * Thanks to everyone with goodthoughts, suggestions and prayers. |
