I can't seem to stop thinking about your DGD. I'm so worried what will happen if they actually take her parents away from her during this time. That doesn't seem helpful at all for the long run.
I just found this online. Some of this child's story doesn't apply to your situation but they name a place in Baltimore that has experience with it: http://archive.thenorthernecho.co.uk...11/132269.html |

Thank you Lisa. There are some similarities but not all. DGD dosen't eat and then throw-up. She just dosent' eat. But it is comforting to know that DGD isn't the first with a disorder like this.Passing on to DDIL Mi |

Maybe you could take care of her for a couple of days??? She opened up to you a little...Maybe she needs to get away from everyone pressuring her. I agree with using art to get her to open up....
I mean you see all the time...people who have eating problems and its psychological.....they want to hold on to all the control they can....granted she is a little girl, but still. |

Way too much time on my hands!
|
I hope they find something soon. I know for me I've had an ED since I was 8. When I was 12 I didn't eat for 4 months straight. No one could get me to eat. I too felt like I'd rather cry or do anything then eat. I went to bulimia after that, binge eating disorder, back to bulimia, etc... I wonder if it does have to do with her mom having surgery? My therapist said they are having kids as early as elementary school in for serious ED's. They keep getting younger and younger. I pray this is not what she has. I've been battling mine for 22 years. I hope it's something easily treated.
Has anyone asked her what she thinks of when she thinks of food? Like a word association game? Maybe start off with things like colors, shapes, toys and then get into food? She might say a word that will seem odd or abnormal.

Has she had a recent (days to weeks or even a couple months before the symptoms started) illness like Strep throat or a virus? Something that comes to my mind is PANDAS (Pediatric Auotimmune Neuropsychiataric Disorders Associated with Strep). A child will develop psychiataric symptoms following an infection (Strep is most common, but it may be associated with other infections). It is believed to be an autoimmune response to the infection, and this response affects the brain. Often the symptoms are obssessive-compulsive or tics, but eating disorder (ED) symptoms have been seen as well. This can happen to young children, and the ED symptoms is usually just a refusal to eat. In older children, there may be other ED symptoms also.

Hi everyone. No news again today. Psych/med is coming to evaluate today.
Persephone and Denise 85: Thank you for your thoughts too. I'm hoping the new therapy can figure all this out.I'm really thinking that DGD is to comfortable here. She is getting lots of one on one attention. I think she needs to be made just a little more uncomfortable ie take the bear away and the blanket away. Even at the age of 3 years a person can be rewarded for the right actions, at this stage the right action is eating. You eat you can have your boo boo bear. I'd settle for drastic action now. I'd settle for anything positive. Mi

Has anyone tried giving her dolls to act out with? You know, play with them, and have the mommy doll fix the little girl doll something to eat. That way it isn't "her" turning the food down and the little girl doll may say something she hasn't. This may have already been brought up.

When my brother was about 2.5 he refused to eat chocolate and was even scared of it. Turns out, a chef carrying a chocolate cake, fell down the stairs on Sesame Street and it scared my brother. I also wonder what may have happened the last time she ate, or at the first meal she refused. Praying for your dgd and all ya'll.

Thank you everyone. The only update is a sad one. She has been moved from the medical side of the hosp to the side that deals with the psycological. It's very difficult for me to believe that a three year old, let alone my DGD would have issues such as this. She will now be tested for autism and the likes of deep eating disorders.
They have a feeding tube in her because she was losing proteins and she lost some weight. Some where in the world has got to be a case similar that has a happy ending. I'm determined to find it. Bless these Dr's at Children's in Chicago. They will pursue this until solved. The Dr at Community Hosp in Munster admited he was defeated. The issue at hand at this moment is to help DS and DDIL through this. They are blaming themselves for whatever it is. They will need counciling to get them through this, know it is not their fault and get set on helping DGD. Once again thank you for all your support. For those of us who have been on the receiving end of thiswonderful support, here on the PG, it is unsurmountable to know that we have hundreds of fresh ideas, helpful thoughts and more than anything prayers. I believe I am not alone and my family can get through this. Mi |

I am really very sorry to hear the answer isn't an easy one. Mental illness is such a hard thing for a family.
If it helps a boy I baby sat for has been on antidepressants since he was 5 years old and he is now a Freshman in college and thriving. He is a smart, funny kid who just needs medication, just like a kid with diabetes would. It is hard to diagnose but once done can be treated sucessfully. Many prayers to you, your DGD and her parents. ![]() |

We went through this with my neice at age 3. She refused to eat for 2 months. We were in the EXACT same position as you ....doing every test in the world. Everything came back normal but what we later found out was that she had choked on a cheeseburger (ate a big piece) and it was uncomfortable for it to go down her throat. Ever since that issue, she didn't want anything to do with swallowing. She was terrified of choking again.
Have you brought in milkshakes or pudding for her to eat? |
