Dear, I'm sad that you've been so distressed-
Watching your wee darlin' facing each test... I'm glad you chose to come here and share- Giving us the chance to show that we care. There was a pivitol moment that triggered this ordeal Something imaginary or something very-very REAL! Wading through this has been a heart wrenching task. "God, please make her all better!" humbly I ask! Love Carole |

Things are the same this weekend. I'm so sorry I have no other news to report now. Only other thing to pray for right now is time. Time is critical for Bret and April. The insurance runs out on Thursday. Bret's insurance only covers family hosp coverage for 30 days a year.
*sigh* Mi |

Sunday update: K had Dorito's dipped in BBQ sauce. It's not a cure yet but at least she is asking for the food, no matter how quirky, not having the food forced on her. A stayed at home Sat and Sunday because DGS was getting sick and rundown. DS went both days himself. K and Daddy sat down to a meal of McD's. She sat on the couch in the room instead of at the table. This is what the Dr's are working on now. Her re-intergration to the family table.
She needs another 30 days with the experts. Her time there is short. I truly wish we could have come up with an answer. Mi *still praying

I'm really, REALLY, reaching, but have they considered the possibility of a mild form of autism? I only ask because I know some children affected by autism who have very rigid food notions and often go on "strike" for no reason the parents can fathom. By most outward appearance, they seem like "normal" (whatever NORMAL may be
) kids, highly intelligent even, but they can have some sensory integration problems that defy logic at times. One girl was refusing to get dressed. She had one outfit she would wear, period. this went on for over a month, until they figured out the dress they had put on her had a scratchy tag in the neck opening. To her, I guess it seemed that she'd rather just stay in the clothes she KNEW were comfy rather than take the chance on getting irritated. I've been told that the scratchy tag probably felt like someone dragging their nails across your neck to you and me.In any case, I'm glad she's making progress! |

While she is at Children's Memorial Hosp in chicago, she has had every test known to the physc staff and I wouldn't doubt they made up some new stuff to test her for/with. 30 staff doctors on her case have proclaimed her healthy, both physically and mentally. She is only three and they are amazed she can read. They are the typical preschool words, cat, dog, mommy, daddy, red, green, etc, but she can read them on demand. this is a game to her.
A added my name to the list of words she instantly recognized - Mimi - and DGD read it as Mommy. So we believe she can figure words out not just memorizing them because seeing the word Mimi, she attempted to figure out the m's but the i's confused her. She writes these letters very well also, for a 3 yo. Her favoirte is the letter H because she can make a ladder out of it. Mi ![]() |

Like so many people, I regularly check to see how this little sweetie is doing -- if prayers count, she's getting quite a few, I'm certain!
I'm glad she's eating (no matter what) and will continue to hope and pray for answers and for her to return home healthy, and with the support she needs to keep getting better! |

From DS and DDIL
Just wanted to let everyone know that Kaelin got her feeding tube out before she went to bed last night. Bret and I have a meeting with her doctors tomorrow to find out exactly how well things are going for her.
Bret & April So this is hopefully the beginning of the end. At this meeting DS hopes to hear what, if any, reasons there were for this unusual behavior. What still needs to be done and finally when she can come back home. Makes me realise how percious life is. Makes me so thankful for all the people who never gave up. Makes me pray for the people who did. Mostly makes me very thankful for the almost 10,000 hits on this thread from wonderful people who don't even know us. Mi ![]() |

The best news ever...
Saturday I planned to go to visit K in the Hosp. I got this instead:
From April's Sunday E-mail Update: We wanted to let everyone know that after 31 nights in the hospital -- Kaelin came home Friday!! After much time and patience, Kaelin finally started eating enough to come home. She’s only taking in a limited variety of foods (some Fruit Loops, an occasional nugget & fries, suckers, apple juice and milk, some "prior" foods, and of course some candy). Her doctors say it can take as long as 3 months for her to get “back on track” with her eating habits and the number of foods she’s willing to eat. She will also have to go back to her doctor at least once a week for awhile just to make sure we stay on track and that things are moving along. We still have a long way to go, but we are just so elated to have her back home again. We also want to thank those who sent cards, gifts, words of support, prayers and kindness during this very difficult time. It is very comforting to know that there are many friends and strangers alike willing to pray for the well being of another. And for that, we are very grateful. Thanks to all who made this time easier for us. Bret and April So... The nightmare is over. There are many days of adjusting to come for Kaelin, DS, DDIL and me. No one is sure why this happened, what caused it and what is to come... Continued therapy is in order. April has her hands full but this we can deal with. To all my friends here, thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for all you have done for me. In 52 years of walking through life nothing was as wonderful and heart rending as watching my sweet grandaughter, Kaelin, eating a handful of M&M's. Thank you . Very sincerely, Mimi ![]() |
