Excuse me but that SUCKS!

It has to do with Mad Cow Disease.

In some parts of the world, cattle can get an infectious, fatal brain disease called Mad Cow Disease. In these same locations, humans have started to get a new disease called variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease (vCJD) which is also a fatal brain disease. Scientists believe that vCJD is Mad Cow Disease that has somehow transferred to humans, possibly through the food chain.

There is now evidence from a small number of case reports involving patients and laboratory animal studies that vCJD can be transmitted through transfusion. There is no test for vCJD in humans that could be used to screen blood donors and to protect the blood supply. This means that blood programs must take special precautions to keep vCJD out of the blood supply by avoiding collections from those who have been where this disease is found.

It is interesting that >5-year cancer survivors can now give blood so I will check into donating here as I just might be eligible again.

Unfortunately, they told my brother he needed the patients SS#. I don't think that's right and I'm going to ask them to reconsider. Of course, it wasn't my blood, but we'l see how it goes.

They should not need his SS#. DOB, name, diagnosis and hospital should be enough.

Leah, I am not monitoring it. Don't feel badly. Your health is just as important as Joseph's. I so appreciate you thinking of us.

DH and I would like to donate, and planned to do it this weekend. I finally got through to the Red Cross donation center and they said they haven't had an out-of-state "credit program" in CA in over 15 years. How can we donate so Joseph gets credit?

See if there is a Carter Blood Center..that is where he is registered Thanks so much! And if not, donate anyway. Doing it with Joseph in mind is just as good and you are very much saving someone's life...someone like Joe Joe.

I am sorry I cannot be tested because I am an organ recipient myself. I cannot donate blood either. Talk about ironic. I thank God everyday for my donor. People do not realize how much donation saves lives until they are faced with needing one.

My son wants to be tested. Please explain how he goes about it, or a link, please. I do know alittle about marrow donation but need to read more about it.

Here is what I know- To find a match for a bone marrow transplant, a blood test must be performed and the blood must be analyzed on 12 different points. The best thing is to get a match on as many of those criteria as possible. The only way to get a 12 out of 12 match is to have a fraternal twin. But it is possible to get an 11 out of 12 match. The more points that a donor matches on when the blood is broken down, the more chance that the bone marrow transplant will work out.

It is similar to kidneys transplants as far as matching the antigens, I think. But the kidney only has 8.

The RC would not take directed donations at the office blood drive yesterday, but maybe I can find a way next time.

Thank you to everyone who tries. Even if Joseph does not get credit, someone who desperately needs that blood is going to get it. It matters. Thank you so much.

I'm so sorry for everything you're going through. I'm not eligible to donate because of the Kreuzfeld Jacob issues and my living in the UK. I wonder if this is a more recent stipulation - I donated on 9/11 and nobody asked me.

I wonder if this precludes me from being a possible donor as well?

I am keeping your family in my prayers! Unfortunately where I live they only take donations when there's a local disaster or accident needing the blood. There's no way for them to regularly get the blood off the island in a cost effective way I've been told. I'm on a list here for emergencies, they call when they need certain blood types locally.
