I'm so sorry for your loss and that you're hurting. Don't dare feel bad for crying because you've lost your bestest friend. You loved him and he loved you back and it's only natural to have a broken heart. When you can, think of all the joy he brought into your life. It'll get better. It'll take some time but it will. Until it does don't be afarid to grieve for him, and in the mean time this is for you,

Thank you again to everyone who posted here. I really appreciate it.

The vet seems to think it was an aneurysm since it happened so fast and Mel was healthy otherwise. He went quickly and hopefully without pain.

to all of you.

Oh Honey- I am so, so sorry. It is quite all right to cry long, and hard, and often. Tears are nature's way of helping us to deal with things that may be unbearable without them.
There is nothing that I can say to make the hurt less, just know that I will remember you in my prayers tonight. Your pet had a wonderful family to spend their time here with. It was loved, and wanted and cared for.

Janny - have you ever seen this quote?

We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached. Yet still we would live no other way.

(by Irving Townsend)

Here's something else I really like - it makes so much sense to me.

"From a vet:

Some of the most poignant moments I spend as a veterinarian are those spent with my clients assisting the transition of my animal patients from this world to the next. When living becomes a burden, whether from pain or loss of normal functions, I can help a family by ensuring that their beloved pet has an easy passing. Making this final decision is painful, and I have often felt powerless to comfort the grieving owners.

That was before I met Shane.

I had been called to examine a ten-year-old blue heeler named Belker who had developed a serious health problem. The dog's owners; Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Shane could learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me - I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

I'm so sorry about your kitty JB. I hope your vet was right and he didn't suffer. He was lucky to have a "mom" like you. I've had kitties all my life and I know how hard this must be.

Oh, I'm so sorry.

I wish I had something more comforting to tell you, but so many here have already done such a good job with that.

I can imagine it was quite a shock, but to the very end, you were right beside him, loving him. I'm sure the last thing he remembers of life is your love and how lucky he felt to have you as his mom.

Thanks for posting this.....I had to put one of my furbabies to sleep last year and it was and still is one of the if not the most painful thing I've ever gone through. I know I did the right thing for him but it's still very painful for me. This post made me cry and smile at the same time. Thanks again

I'm so glad your baby didn't suffer, and everyone here is right, he died in the best place he could - right next to you. I had one dog who died of old age at home, and I was so happy she died at home with me instead of in a cold vet's office.
