I saw this months ago. I literally was sitting at my desk with tears running down my face, I was laughing so hard. I keep it on my phone now for when I need a smile...

There's an herb called plantain (plantago)
that is known as a remedy for a lot of ailments in that list;
maybe the "bananas" are too;
but I don't know what part (leaf? root?) you'd make a tea from.
(Googling "plantain tea" brings up the herb, not the fruit/tree.)
Search for "I love India and Lifestyle Lounge Health Benefits Of Plantain" and scroll to the bottom for nutritional benefits. Then to purchase the tea, go to either Local Harvest - "Plantain Tea- Life Medicine!"

Or, there are several Plantain Tea sites. One that is just Plantain Tea period. Don't know for certain the truth of this, but, from their site~

Quote:
A number of studies have found that diabetics who drink plantain tea often have an easier time managing their blood sugar levels, and it can also reduce the body's desire for sugar. Bladder problems are also commonly treated with this herbal tea since it has been shown to help tremendously in that area. There is also some evidence to suggest that it can lower blood pressure and can even be used to help combat hemorrhoids. It may also help to improve the body's ability to heal, speeding up the healing of wounds and reducing scars and swelling in topical applications.
ETA: I found this particular tea on the River site and it is only 5.37 for 24 bags.

I suspect that whoever put together that article must have confused the two!
I didn't notice it the first time I read the article you posted, but it even says,
"What is more, this miraculous herb is believed to help with loss of voice too."

So, I'm pretty those sites selling plantain tea are made from the herb.
"Life medicine" refers to the Native American name for plantago.

Just trying to clarify since they are entirely different plants!!!

Very interesting. Now, I am confused.

The first paragraph says...

Quote:
Plantains are best described as green counterparts of rich, ripe, yellow bananas that are usually low on sugar content than the sugary-sweet banana. Native to Europe and Asia, there is practically no place on the earth, where plantains cannot be found. Almost a common sight in our backyards, the benefits of plantain are just unparalleled.
So did the person who wrote the article find the herb's benefits and place them in this article? So maybe plantain (fruit) is not all that? Except for RS? And why would anyone drink Plantain tea? Is it legit?

I figured it out. The only paragraph pertaining to the fruit "plantains" is ~

Plantains contain tryptophan, a chemical found in certain foods that acts as a naturally-occurring mood enhancer. Health Guidance suggests that eating plantains and bananas can help people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Due to their considerable amounts of vitamins C, B6, B12 and A1, eating bananas and plantains can also help smokers kick the habit. The magnesium and potassium contained in plantains can assist the body in healing from symptoms of withdrawal.

The rest pertains to the herb which sounds miraculous. I think I need both the herb & the fruit.

Reporting in-

I am beginning day 7 of the hack today. My body is taking to this very well.

I added in drinking some kombucha with my potato meals. I wanted the bugs in the kombucha to mix with the resistant starch in the potatoes.

I have lots of energy, I am sleeping very well, I am in a great mood, I am having no cravings, and am experiencing appropriate hunger. My original plan was to do this a week for sure and then take it day by day after that, maybe getting to 10 days. I will see how I feel.

I don't want to get into a situation where I am nutritionally depleting myself as I have done a hundred times before.

I am having some cold potatoes, some are hot, some reds, yellows, purples, and sweet potatoes. Nothing on them except herbs and spices and sometimes vinegar. I don't even feel bored with them.

I guess I am just surprised that my energy hasn't been zapped.

Wonderful Bev! I felt the exact same way. Have you added any BB? I can't believe how calming they are. Like an instant "happy pill".

I can't wait to hear the final results.

I haven't added the BB yet. If I go on longer than the 7 days I will do that. I am missing the broth. I have read a lot about the potato in the past month, but I am still not understanding exactly what is happening that makes this make you feel so good!

Down a decent amount this morning from PH day #3. 1.3 pre-Bernice so probably closer to 2 in two days. It definitely tests your patience! Feeling very thin these days regardless of scale weight and dumping water like crazy today! Anyway, one more day of hacking for me then off to see my OH in Austin. Looking forward to...well, EVERYTHING! Happy weekend to all!

Great to hear Shelby! Thanks for reporting.

Bev, I can't believe how this works on our mood either. I can remember reading the science behind it in the book Potatoes Not Prozac, but I am a believer now.

I look forward to having potatoes every day. Some days just a small amount, but I try to add them daily.

Is it something to do with raising serotonin levels? I finished day 7 of the hack and am moving on to day 8 today. The funny thing is, when Joyce talked about hash browns on the other thread, I salivated. I am still not sick of potatoes. I am going to go make some hashbrowns in the waffle iron. I like them almost as much as when they are made with fat. That crispy potato goodness!

The lowly potato as a health-improving, weight-loss tool. I never woulda thunk it!

I am eating PHD - Pacific Primal - foods using my JUDDD maintenance calories. Lunch is potato only. I can 'feel' my gut improving - the final remnants of tummy complaints are dropping away. And the scale wants to move down! Dang it, I want the health benefits but - and I never, ever, not in my wildest fantasies expected to say this - I really don't want or need to lose more weight!

Potatoes are beyond amazing.

DS did the potato hack Tues-Fri, just for dinner, and seems to be down over 3lbs already!
I say "seems" because he keeps weighing in the afternoon with clothes on!
Also, he didn't weigh before starting.
But he was XX6.0 on Wed, XX3.6 on Thurs & Fri, and XX2.6 today after eating a HUGE lunch!

I sure have saved a lot of money on groceries this week!

PJ, Fantastic! I am always impressed when a man can stick with this. It is fun when you are my age, but I don't know if my son would continue on with our plan. I agree about the cost savings and the ease of prepping when it comes to food planning.

Nancy, I tried the bb w/ egg yolk and it is splendid! I will be doing my 2nd tater fast on Apr 14-24. I am hoping that I can make it that long. I will be drinking lots of bb all during the fast.

Jenny - sounds like good news with your son! Yes, potatoes are so cheap!!! My daughter dropped a lot of weight only half doing it - oh to have the youthful metabolism!

Nonetheless, things are going well here. I told my MIL how much I have dropped since Christmas (@17 pounds), and she asked if I had been ill! LOL!

Well, he kinda lost it yesterday and ate everything in sight!!!
He was back up to XX5.0 today, and not too happy about it.

By 5pm today he was "SO hungry!!!" and declared he didn't like all-day-potato-days.
So he ate regular food and will go back to potato evenings during the week.

I really hope this works for him because not only will it be good for right now, but it could be a simple & cheap tool he can use the rest of his life.

My 10 day potato hack report:

For my hack, I ate just potatoes or potatoes and kombucha to wash them down. Some cold with malt vinegar, some hot. Some days I had a sweet potatoe. About 600 calories of potatoes a day. I did this along with my 16/8 window.

Loss:
-3.2 (lots of water!)
-1.8
-1.4
-0
-0.6
-1.2
-0.8
+1.2
-0.8

down 8.6! For me, this is a miracle because I only lost one pound in the past 8 months. Nothing was budging the weight loss. This did. However, the BIG test is, will any of this stay off? Up today +1.2 after resuming eating 1200 calories of PHD foods. Hopefully it will stabilize and not go up more. IF this stays off, or IF it pushes me into weight loss mode again, this will be a good tool for me to use in the future or to use on JUDDD down days.

I am hoping for the best for you.

Wow, you didn't eat very much!

My weight goes all over the place when I kick over between the hack and going off. I just ignore it for three days.

I think I am still doing well, but we will see when I weigh in on Saturday morning. I am still on during M-F afternoon, off Fri night to Sunday, and I have had some imperfect days. This is my lowest weight for a Monday morning yet, no gain over the weekend, but I am just maintaining from the week before.

Hi all. Just an update from me. Down another 2.0 Friday morning so from 148.7 to 145.1 in 4 days of hacking (148.7, 148.4, 148.4, 147.1, 145.1). Of course I went off this weekend and ate some stuff that I shouldn't have so I'm going to give myself a day or two to get back to normal and see if the potatoes gave me some carb protection! I'll keep you all posted!

Bev! I am so excited and happy for you! I think the 1.2 will disappear if you have the same results that I have seen other long fasters have. I have yet to make it that long, but I am going to try in a couple of weeks. Did you feel a difference as the days went by? I really do want to have one of these per month to help give me the push on over.

One more thing, I have been reading on Ray Cronise site and there is one guy in particular who said he fought the mid day sleepiness. Isn't that what happened to Sven??? Ray Cronise advised him to skip the lunch time tater and drink water until dinner. It solved the problem. Did you feel a slow down on energy by the end of the 10 days? I only thought about adding the bb to keep the energy consistent.

You nailed it Bev!

Does anyone remember if I mentioned this somewhere else?
Or maybe I just thought of it today....

I was thinking about how some people (myself included) are having unpleasant hypoglycemic reactions to the potato hack.
And a couple weeks ago, I read a report about how raw cornstarch can prevent hypoglycemia after glucose ingestion:
Cornstarch ingestion after oral glucose loading: effect on glucose concentrations, hormone response, and symptoms in patients with postprandial hypoglycemic syndrome.

So....taking a couple tbsp of cornstarch along with the taters might help?

I've tried the tater hack, and I've tried cornstarch for blood sugar control, but I don't think I'd put 2 and 2 together until a few hours ago.

Maybe I'll try it soon.

PJ, How do you take the cornstarch? Mixed in water? Or do you sprinkle it on the meal?
