Diabetes and Paleo
Hi everyone,
How does Paleo work with Diabetes? My wife is type II and we are looking for a way of eating that will help reverse her diabetes. We want to get her body back in balance and stop her meds. I currently eat LC and by her eating what I cook we were able to get her off insulin and now we want stop the meds completely. When you look at most diabetic cookbooks they still have sugars and lots of carbs and only help manage diabetes, so we are looking into Paleo as a possible way of achieving our goal and get to a healthy lifestyle. Any help would be great.... thanks don

I think paleo would work very well for her. She could start with protein and non-starchy veggies, a controlled amount of nuts, testing her blood sugar as she goes along. If she wants to lose weight, don't add any starch or fruit until later. The emphasis on natural fresh food, pasture raised beef, no antibiotics and hormones does wonders for blood sugar.Oh, and no dairy, no grains,no legumes. I follow Robb Wolf and Lauren Cordain recommendations nowadays.
Testing frequently will let her know if it's working well. A stricter plan is Richard Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, a lot of his info is available free online. Also the website Blood Sugar 101 is a wealth of good info on diabetes.
