Bacon allowed on Paleo/primal plan????
Ive been reading a lot of Paleo MSG boards that say it's okay to eat bacon!!!!
However I can't find a brand that doesn't include added sugar as one of the ingredients. Anyone know of a brand that's Paleo safe???? Thanks guys!!!! |

I find Gwaltney sugar free at Walmart.
However I prefer to take it a step further and get sugar AND nitrate free at the health food store, a brand called Applegate. It's pricey and hard to find so I do still use the Gwaltney in a pinch. |

Will go to Costco and get the "no added sugar, lower sodium" bacon. We have cut way back on bacon since semi-retired hubby went back to work--no leisurely mornings lingering over coffee and hot plate of food. He's strictly fast food mornings now but I try to make it healthy for him--oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts, coconut /banana pancakes (made in advance) etc...trying to transition him to PP. We do about 1 lb (just 2 of us) of bacon a week--salads, breakfasts. Some weeks I come up short and another pound goes into the oven (not!) But what the heck. Life is short and bacon is good ![]() Last edited by mamasooze; 01-15-2012 at 04:36 PM.. Reason: spelling |

Organic Prairie Bacon
Only half way decent bacon I can find up here is the Organic Prairie Uncured bacon, with honey. 1 gram per serving. VERY expensive so I use it mainly for seasoning!
Wish I could find the Applegate brand! |

Helpful tip: If you want bacon, get pork belly instead. Pork belly is just like bacon, albeit thicker, and usually can be found for half as much in my neck of the woods. If you can get the pork belly from a pastured pig even better!

If you are a Robb Wolf fan (and who in the paleo world isn't at least a little bit?) He'll be the first to tell you that in an ideal world you should spring for the grass fed, organic, top of the line products but if you can't, you can't. He calls it the "hippy logic" for failing to go paleo LOL! I would love to buy all that stuff but it would bankrupt me - I eat regular eggs, regular bacon, regular meat, non-organic (with a few exceptions). It still works for me - I'm sure I could be a bit healthier about it but it's still leaps and bounds above the way I used to eat (processed foods).

I checked Applegate online. All the bacon they list on their site contains either cane syrup or maple syrup.

If you google paleo home-cured bacon, a bunch of recipes come up. The one on Robb WOlf's website looks great. I've never tried it, but it sounds incredibly easy. Just coat the pork belly with a spice mixture, let it sit in the fridge for a week, then roast it at 200F for a couple hours. Then slice, fry, and serve.

I know most of the posts on this thread are from last year...but, i have poured over EVERY brand of bacon i come across. Carolina Pride is the only one I have ever seen that doesn't have ANY sugar in it...but it has nitrates. I go to the meat guys at Publix and buy a whole package at a time of fresh pork side....get the one that is presliced (i didn't once and had to deal with the "skin" still on bleh! the dogs got it! lol) But it is basically uncured bacon that has nothing added to it. It is super thick and high in fat but i cook it low and slow (takes most of the day to cook the whole package!) and it keeps in the fridge! Yummy goodness and then I use the drippings to cook with later! I add garlic powder, red pepper flakes to it as it is cooking down! Love my pork side!
We are getting a whole foods later this year so it will be interesting to see the different brands...and go bankrupt! lol |

Its hard to find pastured pigs and those that aren't, like cows, are given gmo corn and grains which of course effects our bodies too and caused more inflammation.

Has anyone heard of or tried Murray's Chicken Bacon? Sounds weird, doesn't it?
![]() I saw it listed on the Murray's site; I had discovered their chicken sausage (the first sausage I've found with no bad ingredients!) and wondered what else they make. It is uncured bacon made from chicken thighs and breast meat seasoned to perfection with sea salt, maple sugar (if it did not contain this it would have a perfect ingredient list), celery powder and spices. |
