Help--HEARTBURN!!
:sick:I have been eating 100% Paleo for a week now. I have done this before with no issues. For some reason I have had some pretty intense heartburn this time. I'm also having acid reflux today! Everything I read on Paleo says that it helps with heartburn, so I am confused as to what is causing this issue. Any ideas? Any cures?
I also what to say hello to everyone. I am new, so I hope to get to know several of you and maybe we can all inspire eachother to make healthy choices!! |
Post what you're eating and drinking and maybe someone can spot the problem:)

Hi, welcome!! I have been paleo since Jan 1st, I used to yes get heartburn before paleo, I do rarely still get it slightly, like last night!
I didnt take anything for it, it wasnt that bad, I do make sure to drink some water when that happens, and not lay down (makes it so much worse) I am sure that I had to much fat in my dinner, taco salad. It wasnt the spice this time, sometimes it's either the spice or fat, most times, its fat Do let us know what you ate, that could help |
Give us an example of your menu and maybe there is something hidden in there that is to blame.

So, here is what I normally have:
Breakfast-2 hard-boiled eggs, turkey & a few strawberries Lunch-Cabbage with a can of tuna and a T. of seaseme oil or a salad with chicken, oil and vinegar dressing Snack-Walnuts and beef jerkey Dinner-Chicken and some type of veggie, possibly another salad. I also drink lots of water. |

Salt-Containing Foods Almost all commercial salad dressing and condiments Bacon Cheese Deli Meats Frankfurters Ham Hot Dogs Ketchup Olives Pickled Foods Pork Rinds Processed Meats Salami Salted Nuts Salted Spices Sausages Smoked, dried, and salted fish and meat Virtually all canned meats and fish (unless they are salted or unless you soak and drain them) _________________________________________ It's the sodium that is giving you the heartburn. Hope this helps.:D |
I think your menu looks good? I do eat tuna also. I would try eliminating the nuts and jerky for a couple of days just to see if the heartburn goes away?
what type of oil do you use on your salads? I usually make a dressing for my salads that consist's of olive oil small spoon homemade mayo black pepper small amt salt grated fresh garlic (SO yum) My salads are HUGE, I usually use about two TBSP or so of this dressing. then stir it like crazy before I eat it. I put in protein also and avocado How are you feeling today? are you taking fish oil? |
My mom can not eat canned tuna. Something they put in the broth sets her gallbladder off in a big way. Possibly a similar reaction for you (only indigestion not gb).

I think it's the tuna also. You may just need to switch to a different kind. I eat the starkist select in olive oil and never get the burn I would with the chunk light tuna in water.
|
Tuna in "water" is usually packed in vegetable broth which means soybeans. That's the reason to avoid it, not salt.
Walnuts trigger heartburn for me. Beef jerky could be the culprit depending what kind of food additives and preservatives are in it. |
Thank you everyone.....I'm feeling quite a bit better today! I'm going to cut out the tuna and beef jerkey and see what happens. I'm secretly hoping that it was just a flair up and that after I eat this way a little longer that it'll go away completely.
