Food conflicts in paleo blogs and books?
 
Flax seeds, meal and oil?
Olive oil?
Bacon and sausage (little or no additives of course)?
Nuts? (not peanuts)

What are your thoughts on these?

I think everyone in the paleo/primal world has slightly different views on things and have found what worked and made sense for them. I have read different people's take on the WOE and chose what made the most sense to me. If we do not see the results we want we will tweak.

I don't use flax at all. Never have so it is a non-issue.

I use olive oil because it is a time tested ancient oil unlike today's modern oils. It has proven it's worth and health properties. I also use coconu oil, lard and butter but those are the only oils I use.

We eat bacon and sausage, well because it tastes good. THe sausage we eat is local, fresh and probably not loaded with preservatives because it is only sold locally frozen. Bacon is a treat.

Peanuts are not nuts and if you are going to strictly avoid legumes you would not want to eat them. I happen to like them and so do my family members. They do not like almond or sun butter. We still use peanut butter and eat the occasional peanut. These foods are probably vastly superior to eating a lot of snack foods so it is all good in my book ;) However if they gave us digestive upset or anything we would give them up.

I agree with barefoot....

we don't eat peanuts or flax...I don't assign any moral reason to it, we just don't. LOL! Bacon and sausage we eat, but I don't think that's a huge deal. Everyone differs, I guess...minus the bacon or sausage, we are processed-free over here...

We dont eat any flax or flax oil
we do eat a small amount of bacon (very good quality from a local butcher)
we dont really have any sausage, just dont like it very much
my husband eats almonds, other nuts are good too, just not peanuts

Olive oil - I believe it to be healthy, but should be minimally heated
Bacon - YUM O. But, besides that, it should be uncured and nitrate free
Sausage, in general, is too processed for frequent consumption but is a good "stand by" in a pinch
Nuts - good after weight loss/near goal if the person can handle portion control

Yes on the Flax and Olive Oil
No to bacon and sausage
Nuts are great (no legumes)

LJB thanks for that link. As an anthropologist I fundamentally disagree that we are not meant to consume a fairly fatty diet. I suppose I couldn't do paleo as they define it afterall.

It's only one "take" on paleo. Like low carb, there are different flavors (no pun intended :rofl:).

I don't trim the fat from my meat, but one reason it is recommended is because of today's food supply - the fat is where toxins are found.

I agree with you about the list being fat-phobic (my words, not yours).

I don't understand that there is only one take on Paleo.:confused:Are you thinking of Primal or Neanderthin?

The link is one take on paleo. I consider Primal, Paleo Solution, Neanderthin, all to be under the paleo umbrella.

The specifics and opinions vary with each author.

I don't use flax because I don't believe it to have as much benefit as saturated fats and DHA

LJB-I find it odd that the link you posted recommends canola oil. Here's a very in depth article about canola oil from the Weston A Price Foundation. Usually if a recipe uses a bad oil, I just replace it with coconut oil instead.

Flax: I don't like the taste. Nutritionally there are better choices. I don't eat fiber for fiber's sake.

Olive Oil: It is a healthful food and perfect for salad dressings. I like California Olive Ranch.

Bacon: I buy uncured and nitrite free. I go through times where I eat it every day for a week and then don't have it for a while.

Sausage: I buy from US Wellness meats. I've had the pork breakfast sausage and the apple chicken sausage.

Nuts: I don't eat them. They give me a stomach ache. If they are roasted in industrial seed oil they give me heartburn. I'd like to try some nuts the way WAPF recommends preparing nuts but I haven't wanted to invest the time. Many people use almond flour for baking but I prefere coconut flour.

I think paleodiet was somebody's school project. I wouldn't bother using it as I don't feel it is representative of this health movement.

I always have had a problem with flax and canola oil even before Paleo and never use it. Olive Oil or ghee is my choice for cooking meat. Yet, ghee takes such a long time to process if I make my own and it is much easier to buy a large bottle of Greek Olive Oil at my grocery store.

I use flax for the body it gives foods lol. Coconut flour for the same reason. I do like the flavor of golden flax though, kind of reminds me of graham cracker.
Bacon and sausage are odd for me being low-carb. I rarely eat either! Sausage because I end up retaining water badly after eating even a little, so I have a small serving maybe once every 2 months, usually a link sausage with cabbage or something like that.
Bacon maybe 3-4 slices a month! I do like to add a chopped slice to my egg salad or spinach salad now and then, otherwise I've never really gotten addicted to it (lol).
Now son and DH both can sit down and eat a pound of sausage or a pack of bacon like a dyson! poof gone!

Flax - I don't consider this food. No scientific reason, just can't see any advantage to eating something that is best known for furniture polish and cloth making

Olive oil - no problem here, always have a good bottle around for drizzling. 99% of my cooking is done with saturated fats - primarily lard and coconut oil.

Bacon and sausage - I'll eat in moderation, I get both from a local source with minimal ingredients in the sausage

Nuts - I don't eat many just because I never think of them. I have a good selection in my freezer for adding to the occasional dish that they would work with.

I think the paleo movement is becoming more of a philosophy than a list of rules. I definately don't agree with Cordain's original take on lean meat and fats, in fact he has re-visited the issue himself lately. It's constantly evolving. There are plenty of differing opinions on the details in the paleo-sphere, but the one thing we all seem to agree on is that we should be eating real food, nothing conceived and processed in a lab. And that our source for that food should be as clean and natural as possible. I can live with that...

I actually love my friend's way of eating. I may have linked his "A Meal Plan You Can Live With" at some point. He's more of a Low Carb Primal Eater.

I will link it again. A Meal Plan you can "live with".

I dont really like flax much... and the oil is just not tasty at all for me..

We love olive oil, use it as dressing all the time, and for veggies.

Bacon and sausage maybe once a month? and when we get them we splurge..

Nuts. We usually get Raw Almonds, Cashiews, walnuts, pecans, and pistaciaos... oh and always have a jar of almond butter in the fridge. its a nice way to add fat to fruit like banana or apple.
We dont eat peanuts at all..

like others have said paleo has a huge umbrella. its almost just like saying oh im low carb. so many different sub plans under that umbrella.. all depending on the book author imo.
The most strick that I have read is Loren Cordain, then after him is Robb Wolf ( I follow his plan the most) then Sarah Fragoso, and the most leaniant to me seems to be Mark Sisson (I have not yet read the book) but to me it seems that the forums over there the people eat alot just closer to atkins and find loop holes into eating low carb treats (once again this is just my opinion).

Kerry lol very true. I think my major goal is to be 90% "clean" and just do my best to eat the healthiest way possible (while it still being tasty!).

There are definitely variations out there. I've read a ton of paleo/primal/whole foods links and books, and I came up with my own variation.

I do a primal inspired diet that includes meat, dairy, fruit, vegetable, nuts, and healthy oils. I also eat potatoes and white rice on occasion, as these are considered "safe starches" by the authors of The Perfect Health Diet. I eat dark chocolate and drink wine as well.

I don't eat any grains except rice, as I'm gluten intolerant. I greatly minimize sugars, and I don't eat processed foods. I eat three meals a day, including a high protein breakfast, and I don't snack.
