Yes, I would think 1200 would have been too high since according to Livestrong.com, mine would be 1135-1177 to lose a pound a week and I'm 5 1/2 inches taller than you. First step would be to find out what your calorie level should be and then let us know your present WOE.

BTW, we're not OLD, we're OLDER. We definitely do have a harder time losing.

I'm also going through a frustrating period trying to figure out what is going on with bod. We both are eating clean and watching our salt so something else is going on.

Thank heavens you're hanging in there and not giving up!
Thank you so much, Sharon, for the info. I refuse to give up and am determined to get to my goal some day!!!
****** says I should have 1481 calories and Livestrong says I should have 876, but some sites say to not go below 1200 a day. Think I have to go below that to lose.

No, we are not old, but just older. I like that but I consider it a blessing to be old - just means I am stilll here and doing pretty well EXCEPT this weight thing.

I did lose around 40# doing low carb a few years ago and then it just stopped working for me. I have been on so many "diets" all of my life and have probably just gotten my metabolism shot and know the older I get the harder it is to lose. Think I will try to do between 800 & 900 as I have been doing the past few days and really watch the sodium. I don't eat ham or any processed foods, so am really not getting much sodium in my foods. Ilove to eat lots of veggies, but have to watch that, too, because of Vitamin K that affects the blood thinner that I take. Bummer!!!

I weighed 132 a few weeks ago and now up to 143.

Sorry for all of the others here that struggling. Really hope all of us start doing better. Hopefully, when the weather warms up, it will make a difference. I know I will be outside a lot more, but not today since it is in the 30's here in the Midwest today.

Take care, all and thanks so much for the support.

Hope, check out Wukong's Thread called Low Fat High Carb Diet. It's under Other, just scroll down. He's 6' and has lost all that weight eating between 1500 to 1650 calories/day. 1481 calories is way too high for you - you're petite at 5'1"! He's also posted some of his menu's in case you'd be interested in how he accomplished his weight loss. Now, men do have an easier time losing weight, but still....

I'm following the same diet, but not as strict as he's done. The main reason I follow that WOE is because I've lost weight twice with Atkins/High Protein diets and both times gained it all back so am now trying to eat like I will after making Goal, but watching calories to achieve Goal.

Joannew has done wonderful eating below 1000 calories/day on LC. Erika does well fasting a day or two on just meat and egg fast to get rid of water weight. Here's some good news for you if you choose to do Atkins again or some other plan - sometimes it's beneficial to eat differently for a few weeks, then go back on plan.

Here's some info and you can probably Google to find more. Lyle McDonald has written on Flexible Dieting.

Good Luck and Post your weigh-ins daily. It's how we stay accountable and focused

Erika, any processed foods? Just curious before I buy some ham slices. I usually buy a few processed foods and thinking shame on me if that's one of my problems. I know. Bad!

I feel your pain, Erika. I am just doing the same thing - bouncing up and down and just don't what the cause is either.

Hopefully, we will get the scale going the right way soon. Hang in there.

Thanks for all of the info, Sharon. Appreciate it.

Beachmom...You are doing fine!

Sharon...Your grumpy smiley made me giggle

Wukong...You are just wasting away!

Maryann...You are welcome, you'll be surprised how quick/ much sodium can add up.

Hope...Honey, first a I know how you feel because I am going through the same thing. My lowest ever weight last year was 165 lbs and now I'm back up to between 174 and 178, even as high as 182 on the first of April. In my case I know what the problem is, I eat to much, I do good for a few days/weeks and then I overeat due to horrible cravings/ hunger.
I know all this is happening because in order to lose weight quick last year I starved my body, and it is backfiring now. I lost 60 pounds in a little over 3 months, and then another 30 after that. My body wants the pounds back!
Struggling really bad myself right now so I am in the wrong position to give advise, because I still have to figure out myself how to calm my body down. Right now I am trying to eat between bmr and tdee, because I read over and over again that one should never go below bmr and that eating to little will only backfire...which in my case it did big time. I am throwing a couple of names out there to google since I cant post any websites here, there is a lot of good information on there and may be you find some answers on there?

Thanks for the encouragement, Erika. I can't eat ham or any other processed meats, cheese or cottage cheese as they really make me retain water. The low fat cottage cheese that I used to buy was loaded with sodium, so had to quit that, too. Bummer!! since I really like all of those.
Have a great evening, everyone.

Good morning to all.
Maryann, that sodium is a killer. I am so struggling with that and I'm not even eating any processed foods, but getting it in just the basic foods and think, too, that my medications have something to do with it.
I am going to start weighing daily next week and listing my weight here.
A good Friday to all.

If you haven't already, check out various sites on boosting your metabolism which will burn more calories. Here's a quote from a site - "You have a huge amount of control over your metabolic rate," says John Berardi, Ph.D., C.S.C.S., author of The Metabolism Advantage. "You can't affect how many calories it takes to keep your heart beating, but you can burn an extra 500 to 600 calories a day by exercising properly and eating right."

"The foundation for a successful weight loss program remains a combination of a healthy diet and exercise customized for you. Simply reducing food intake to lose weight can lead to a decline in muscle mass and bone density. So even though your weight goes down, your resting metabolism is reduced making the body more prone to putting on fat. More skeletal muscle can prevent "rebound" weight gain."

"The main reason I follow that WOE is because I've lost weight twice with Atkins/High Protein diets and both times gained it all back so am now trying to eat like I will after making Goal, but watching calories to achieve Goal. "

Sharon, I think you hit the nail on the head with that! Since learning that WOE is "way of eating" it'd make sense that to maintain ones ideal weight they must have a WOE that becomes a WOL "way of life" of their every day existence or else end up back where they were or higher. It'd seem that from what we're finding out is that a permanent WOE would have a very limited amount of processed foods, sugars, soft drinks. It comes down to what an individual values most, mental health from being fit & being healthier over a long term or giving in to the temptations of tasty food and not forcing the body to exert itself. It's a lifelong choice that is made easier once having reached an optimal weight and having learned a WOE that maintains it, and, knowing where we were and not wanting to go back. Btw - what is your target weight?

Actually I think today's weight is my valid weight up from my low. I haven't exercised for 13 days forcing myself to rest my bod's joints. Plus when I got what should be my daily calorie from Livestrong, it was for at least some activity to be able to lose 1 lb/wk. I haven't been active plus gone over my calorie count a few day. Usually wouldn't count that much, but add inactivity to the picture and I assume my weight went up.

It's interesting that Wukong mentions metabolism because I've been thinking the same thing - mine has slowed.

Today I am starting exercising today and hope all goes well with joints. This means my weight will be up tomorrow with water weight repairing, but at least I'm expecting it. I hope to have a great week adding exercise back in even if at first it adds weight.

Erika...You made me laugh like I did with Wukong's "Whoopee".

Have a Blessed Sunday Joannew…Maryann...Wukong...BM...Erin...Erika....LC L.....Robin…MG…Hope

Wukong...You mentioned previously you ate Black Forest Ham. Where did you buy it please. Is it in a small package or can or like half a ham? I looked for that brand at WinCo and couldn't find it there. I love ham although there is a lot of salt in it.

My target weight is 121 lbs. It's posted on the left on my profile.

I got the book "The Low GI Diet Revolution" from the library and encourage all to check it out no matter what WOE you're following as it lists the Low-Glycemic-Index value of foods. You might find it interesting. Even you, Wukong, as you might find it interesting to see what foods are permissible once you get to target.

Thanks for all your input, Wukong!

WOE: low-glycemic diet plan
Start Date: Jan. 12th, 2013
April goal is to get to or below 180.
Weight loss started Jan. 12th at 212lbs. April 1st started at 187.2

End of Week 1 - 182.0 (3.2 lbs)
End of Week 2 - 181.0 (1.0 lb)
End of Week 3 - 179.4 (1.6 lb)

Week One - Sun 3/31 185.2, Mon 4/1 187.2, Tue 4/2 184.8, Wed 4/3 184.2, Thu 4/4 183.6, Fri 4/5 183.6, Sat 4/6 182.0

Week Two - Sun 4/7 181.8, Mon 4/8 182.4, Tue 4/9 182.8, Wed 4/10 182.0, Thu 4/11 181.8, Fri 4/12 180.8, Sat 4/13 181.0

Week Three - Sun 4/14 181.8, Mon 4/15 181.2, Tue 4/16 180.6, Wed 4/17 179.2 , Thu 4/18 179.0, Fri 4/19 180.4, Sat 4/20 179.4

Week Four - Sun 4/21 179.4

Sharon - Thanks for the tip on the book, sounds interesting. I shop at Winco too. The black forest smoked ham is their own deli sliced meat with maybe 12 slices or so per package. It has 370mg of sodium & 30 calories per slice so it is kind of high in sodium but much of what I eat is low (smoothies, salads, fish) so I'm ok having it periodically. Some things of interest about metabolism ... drinking cold things as takes more energy to warm it up (put ice in my smoothies), drink coffee (I don't), eat spicey foods (I don't), build muscle, eat small frequent healthy snacks, areobic exercise. You're doing well to have rested your body that long and not gain weight back, congrats!

Erika / Maryann - time to reverse things a bit Here's a happy little weight loss song to motivate you
