I'm 47 - is it too late for me?
It seems that most times when I see someone who has dieted and lost large amounts of weight, they are on the youngers side when it is easier to lose weight. I am 47 and am feeling like it is too late for me to lose weight - that it just won't happen - that as we get older, our bodies, just won't allow us to be as thin as we used to be. I'm 47, Female, 5'4" and now up to 185 pounds. I was always stick thin as a teenager - will I ever see 140 again or is it ridiculous to try?

47 is practically an infant! Okay, 47 is a mature adult body getting hints of things to come.
If you want to lose, you will find a way. My MIL lost 30 pounds - and maintained her health and energy - when she was 89. I lost 50 when I was 59. I take it back. 47 IS practically an infant! |

you might not get as thin as you would like, but you can lose something. and best of all, you can keep from putting on weight as you age. it's not like this happens once, the aging thing... it continues year after year. I lost a lot in my 50s, but I weighed a lot more to start with.

I'm 53 and lost 25lbs since January (about 35lbs overweight) so if you have the determination it can be done as the many here can attest to. It does require a change in eating habits and exercise though. You can do it!

That is very encouraging! I am going to research to see what "JUDD" is....I've never heard of that term. Thank you all so much!

I understand how you feel LoveThose Leopards. The first time that I did LC, I was 48...I lost 17lbs over about three months. It was hard but once I got the hang of it...I was able to lose. Unfortunately, menopause hit shortly afterwards and...."hello" 17lbs plus another 8lbs. I basically gave up....it felt like NOTHING would work and I resigned myself to just being fat and square for the rest of my life. On Jan. 14th, I joined our local Curves and started doing their complete diet and exercise program. So far, I have lost 16lbs and I only have 9lbs to go!!!! I am SO happy. It has taken a lot more exercise this time but I am here to tell you....it CAN be done! You CAN have a waist again! Find the right plan for you but never doubt that you CAN do it!
Oh...I forgot to say that I am 52 now

Ha! Never say never.
My grandmother lost quite a lot of weight in her 60s (I don't know how much), and my MIL claims to have lost 100 pounds in her late 60s (I think probably more like 80 pounds). I've lost nearly 120 pounds, all in my 40s. I have dropped nearly 50 pounds in the past year, from age 47 to 48. I almost fainted - I didn't realize it was that much (I went up 10 pounds first, so I guess technically almost 40 pounds). If you are checking out JUDDD (I don't follow it), be sure to check out the down day hack thread (DD Hack). I'm doing the potato hack as a week-day plan with weekends off. It is working great for me after being stuck on low carb.

I have insulin resistance-my posts are biased for this! High fructose diets destroy liver's insulin sensitivity. Glutens bind up insulin and leptin receptors, interfering with satiety. Industrial vegetable oils contribute to inflammation of the liver that is part of metabolic syndrome. Read archevore/Kurt Harris for more info. Exercised muscles will up regulate insulin receptors. |

i started dieting a month before my 51st birthday, 10 months ago, and i've lost 70 pouds. i have a lot more to lose, beyond my first mini goal of onderland.
i never lost weight easily, even as a young person, but this time around, i've done a LOT of experimenting to keep things moving. i wish i could say that i've tried just one diet to accomplish this, but i can't. it takes tweaking. i do believe that for 99% of the population, moderate to low carb is the way to go. imho |

I make 50 next month so coming from my experience. Losing is not the problem, but at 47 is when you will start seeing more skin changes with dieting. If I had it all over to do again, I definitely make sure I was at least walking while dieting to keep my skin and muscle tone up. Good luck, you can do it!

58, post-menopausal, just lost 42 lbs since August - 8 more to goal - you may have to count calories like I did - I can't lose anymore by just cutting carbs out - but I stayed strictly low carb and tracked using the WW online plan - never hungry, never felt better. Wish I'd done it when I was 47! So go for it - or you'll be 57 and asking the same question in 10 years

HECK NO it's never too late until you are six feet under!! I lost 235 pounds and re-invented myself!! I feel better now than I did when I was 25, and I am now 54!!
Just START & you will be surprised where you will end up! Just remember that it IS a grind but the results WILL BE WORTH IT. If someone told me that I would wear the same size and be the same weight as I was in high school, I woulda told them they were NUTS!! It is possible with some work & effort; look to our LCF's here for inspiration. They're everywhere, as we all have a story!!! |
