WOE: JUDDD for WL/5:2 IF for maintenance
5:2 IF Plan (an experiment) Come and Join in!

There's lots of buzz right now about the new book coming out, The Fast Diet by Dr. Michael Mosley, which is a plan under the IF (intermittent fasting) umbrella.

Mosley did a BBC documentary last year about fasting and IF plans. Before the documentary he was a skeptic but by the end of his research he believed in IF so much, that he decided to start following a form of it, the 5:2 plan. He's since lost around 20lbs and has had improvements on his blood work numbers.

The book is not out in the U.S. yet, but I've watched the documentary, watched an interview with Dr. Mosely, and I've also read several articles about the plan. I currently do JUDDD (which also falls under the IF umbrella), but I've decided to do a 5:2 experiment for two weeks, to see how the plan works/compares with JUDDD. I'd love for others to join in with me

In a nutshell, what the 5:2 plan is-

5: 5 days a week you eat normally-be sensible, but you may also have a dessert here and there etc. Mosley does not really give any guidelines for the normal days, though he does mention women following the recommended 2,000 calorie rule.

2: 2 days a week you go into a fasting mode, however you still are allowed to eat 500 calories for women, 600 calories for men. Mosley breaks his calories into a two meal day-breakfast and supper.

That's it! There's a thread in the JUDDD section with links to the documentary/book etc. so if you want more info on the science behind this plan, head over there and check it out

Ok, here's my beginning stats:

-this morning I weighed in at 144lbs (actually a new low for me ).
-My fasting days will be Mondays and Thursdays and I will only weigh myself the morning after these fasting days.
-on the normal days I'm going to aim for 1,700-2,000 calories, though I won't really be keeping track of them too closely.
-my last day of the experiment will be Friday, February 1st, when I weigh in that morning, after my 4th fasting day

I am doing this experiment to see if A. I can still lose weight cutting back on fasting days (with JUDDD I do 3-4 a week) and B. if I can maintain with just two fasting days a week.

Good Morning M23K!

I would like to experiment with you on this plan for 2 weeks. Fasting on Monday and Thursdays would work the best for me as well.

Good Luck to us!

My starting weight is 145.2. Next weigh in is on Tuesday.

Thanks for the invitation from the JUDDD thread. I got an e-book last night called The 5:2 Diet Book... by Kate Harrison. It was only 2.99 from Amazon and I'm reading it now. Sound interesting - I do want to get Mosley's book when it's available here.

OK - I think I will give it a try.

Starting weight 162
My 2 days will be Tuesday and Thursday

I also took my measurements at the beginning of January as I started to do callanetics which is really supposed to change ones body. I've lost 40 lbs a year ago doing lc and have played with 5 lbs the last year. So, I'm not in a hurry to lose more, but it would be nice.

Maybe only 2 days will be better handled in my house. (I think we've been married too long!!)

Yesterday I ate a lot of calories-was doing good until we went to the in-laws for supper and I was attacked by the tin of 170 calories-a-piece cookies So that was definitely a 2,000 kind of day! Today has been better-I skipped breakfast and had steak, salad, garlic toast, fries and an ice cream sandwich for lunch at the in-laws (avoided the cookies this time lol). I'll have a WW entree for supper which is under 300 calories, so I'd guesstimate that today will be in the 1,700-1,800 calorie range. Tomorrow will be my first 'fasting' day for the experiment. Now coming from JUDDD I'm used to a fasting day every other day, so tomorrow will be pretty easy for me I've already got my 500 calories planned out so I'm good to go!

Sara -- I said I was going to join in your experiment, but have determined that any DD in my house is going to cause issues, so I'm doing the Fast5 where I fast than open a window of 5 hours to eat. It will cause less stress in the house. I don't know what his issues are but I don't won't to deal with them!!!

Good luck!

Update:

Saturday and Sunday were both normal/Up Days for me, and I ate around 2,000 calories on each day
Yesterday was a fasting/Down Day and I ate 470 calories. I also stuck to two meals-one at 1pm and another at 5pm (normally I'd spread my DD calories out throughout the day but wanted to follow Mosley's path as close as possible for the experiment)

This morning was weigh in and I was pretty surprised to see that I've stayed the same, at 144lbs. Now my scale does only weigh in .5lb increments, so it is possible that I'm up a few ounces and just can't see it. But, I was expecting quite a bounce this morning, after having the two up days in a row and only one down/fasting day

Today/tomorrow are normal days and then Thursday is my second fasting day for the week. Next weigh in is Friday!

The best part of 5:2 is that your Sirt-1 will continue to keep flowing with minimal fasting, as long as you continue. Thank you for reporting results!

Great news on maintaining mom! Looking forward to seeing how it all works out for everyone!
I plan on joining you guys next Monday if this week ends well on regular JUDDD. I will have Monday and Thursday as DD. (I may move that to Mon and Wed) I plan on eating 1 meal for all the calories on DD, will stick to about 450.
Would like to be able to maintain at that plan, so I'm ready to try it out!

I'm doing 5:2 with great success! I'm just trying to maintain but actually lost 2 more pounds. How that happened I don't know since I eat 2000+ on my five up days (and mostly high carb, sugary junk), and 500 on my two down days. The only other thing I do is Bodyflex breathing for 15 minutes every morning. Anyways, Im going to try the 6:1 in February because I don't want to lose anymore weight. Needless to say, I'm loving this WOE. Good luck to everyone!

Count me in! I love the IF principle (and JUDDD of course) but it doesn't fit my lifestyle/workout schedule. 5:2 does! My fasting days will be Monday & Thursdays as those are my 'off' days from the gym.

I'm watching this with interest. I'm really considering doing 5:2, and was thinking of doing Mondays and Thursdays as my DDs, but those are both Zumba days. Hmmm, and you all are eating MORE on your 5 days than I am currently on JUDDD. I'm not sure how that works, but I would love, love, love it if it would work for me.

I'm wondering if I should just jump right in. Today's a DD, but Keira's school is having a fundraiser at Chuck E Cheese. I can still manage a DD, but am considering having today be another UD. Decisions, decisions!

Wow!! I am so surprised at the attention 5:2 has gotten.
When I googled some months ago, all I got were the scientists and Mosley....now there are pages and pages.

I basically do this but have no real schedule.
For instance today was to be DD but I got called to work so will be up until 1 a m.
I know myself and cannot go that long....so, tomorrow.

I know a bud who lost her weight w JUDDD then went to 5:2 w consecutive days and slowly started to drift upwards so back to alternating.
She is aware of eating too many cals on UD but hasn't made the effort to reduce them permanently.

Five days is a lot if you have a tendancy to overeat on UD but I also believe that SIRT1 will stay higher if those two days are separated rather than together....maybe it's better for making corrections, as well.

Everyone is a bit different re calorie levels on UD ( and should they be considered UD's if you're doing 5, or just regular days?).
Actually, that should be a discussion in itself!! Mosley ate w his family, for the most part...regular meals.

I'm going to do it!! I can research, but should the 5 days be at or around TDEE, or 2000, or go with what the JUDDD calculator gives me for UDs? Just if you know off the top of your lovely heads.

I figured my TDEE (1690) and that is definitely what I will do daily in maintenance. I would gain with 2000, but I am not young like all of you.

Mine's coming in at 1989. I'm trying to decide if I want my high days to be around 2000, or still at a 20% deficit which would be around 1600. If I split the difference, I'm pretty much at what the JUDDD calculator gives me for UDs, 1786 (I think).

I figured my TDEE out again, but used a different calculator that's more in depth. It breaks down the minutes of your day, (how much you sleep etc etc), and I got a higher number, at 1953. I like that one better The other calculator gave me a TDEE of 1,710
