I never actually followed any of the "plans" from the original CAD book and would be curious if others here have any advice. I always just ate the CM's according to plan, and what I wanted for RM. Then I read CALP and again Rachael Heller's story of losing 150lbs by basically eating an RM only per day. I slowly got less hungry when I started skipping CM's and was able to get to a lunch time RM only to carry me through most of the day just fine. Occaisionally I get hungry other times and will eat a CM if I am hungry. I also liked CALP since it got rid of the plans and really well defined the RM and the entire "balance" thing which I still find can be tricky. I try to aim for 1 part protein/fat, 1 part low carb veggies (most days 2 parts and it is a huge 4-6 Cup salad), and 1-2 parts carbs. Not really according to the book but I have been slowly losing eating like that. I calculate 1800-2600 calories a day and 100-160 grams of carbs a day on most audit days. But I am seeing a slow down so I may have to cut back a bit and/or start exercising. Since my vacation when I went off plan for 4-5 days I am having a harder time eating RM only so I guess my hunger did go back up!

Ok, first day back to no hunger, only doing RM mid-day and feeling great! Weight was 220 this am but I did a CM lunch at work yesterday (one salmon pattie, 4 Cup mixed green salad with olive oil only) and then LOTS of sushi, large dark beer, and a kit kat and almond joy for my RM dinner.

Todays RM lunch:

16oz iced mocha decaf 2% milk (normally I get a 20 ounce so trying to be a bit better on portion control )

Got the French Dip sandwhich from the cafeteria but skipped the au jus that came with it AND also skipped the macaroni salad that came with it ()

Then a large 5 Cup mixed green salad with bacon crumbles, diced eggs, cucumber, mushrooms, a bit of shredded cheese, and 3 TBSP blue cheese dsg.

1 kit kat and 1 reeses piece (regular sized packages)

Today I am 216.8 lbs so definately moving in the right direction! Glad to be back on track. Boy that 4 days off plan (after a solid 9 months with maybe 5 cheat days during that 9 months spaced out) was a real eye opener! Not going back there again for sure.

Last couple of days I have been doing RM lunch and a CM dinner. Today I am doing an RM breakfast and will do a CM later if I get hungry. I am hoping eating my bigger meal earlier will help me get back into the 213-215 territory faster. Then I can work on going back to my Large Lunch WOE (basically RM only days eaten mid-day).

Woo Hoo!!!! 214.6 lbs today. DEFINITELY moving in the right direction.

It took me 12 days to lose the weight I put on in 4 days. Well over half a month blown for 4 days off plan. I think for sure next time I will commit to making plans for what I will eat and "how" by staying on plan for my next road trip. I was in the mind frame "oh well, I've been good. Will be nice to not have to think about what I am eating and just go with the flow." WRONG! LOL

It took me several days to stop feeling sooooooo tired and slow. It made my TOM one of the worse in well over a year. I was so aggravated by everyone around me, and sweaty. Metering out those carbs throughout the day definately sent my hormones (not just insulin) into a major tailspin. I even gnawed off my fingernails which I haven't done in the past 9 months.

We left on July 9th and I weighed 215.4 lbs. When we got back on July 14th I weighed 223! The next day I was down to 219 and I suspected a VERY salty meal I ate for dinner the day before was a good portion of that as water loss. Anyway, I had to fight daily for all the weight I have lost since and am relieved my body was kind to me and lost it as fast as it did.

I share this because even though I went into this willingly with every intention of going right back on track and knowing my weight would go up while gone, never did I think it would go up that high! I want others to know who may flirt with going on/off plan that you have to be mentally prepared for some HUGE spikes in weight and to not let it derail you.

Also I think it was a good experiment for me to see that I will have to be prepared better for longer trips (one or two days on the road I can handle but this one was a total of 5 long days in the RV with 2 very hyperactive children with behavior issues in 90-100 deg heat with NO a/c while driving! Argghhhh...)

Good Timing !

This came just in time for me !
Im going away with my family for 9 days overseas and was planning to NOT follow the diet whilst away, but now I see that that would be a mistake !

Having gone through this, what tips do you have to make it easy to stay on track?
The trip is to Germany's Black Forrest with my 3 girls and husband. Its a family vacation, so there will be lots of attractions and sites visited....

The thing is that a couple weeks before my trip I was down to 213 so going up to 223 was 10 POUNDS in a 2 week period! YIKES!!!

For tips, just bring as much protein and veggies as you can. If you can have good amounts of each protein and veggies at each meal, then you don't have to feel guilty about the carbs at the RM. I would say next time if I plan on going "off plan" it will be that my RM's would be less balanced and more carb heavy. I have found and repeated over and over that is isn't so much the RM hour that will mess you up it is what you are doing the other 23 hours of the day (ie CM's or grazing).

Next time I am bringing lots of celery and cream cheese, head lettuce (romaine and red leaf) instead of prepackages baby greens because the head lettuce keeps longer, and maybe even pre-cook some steaks and hamburger patties so I don't have to worry about the meat going bad while on the road. We were in an RV with a small kitchen and frige so we could take our food but space is limited and the RV friges are never as cold as you would like them to be.

For camping or hiking, if you can get yourself used to it (which I was and just slipped) I actually was just doing RM only most days and just being sure to eat as much as I could to get comfortably full. That would carry me the other 23 hours. Not sure if you could swing that but if so, just bring some CM friendly jerky or pepperoni sticks and cheese sticks, some celery and you could have that on the trail as a CM then eat your big meal later and not have to worry so much.

If you are just in a touristy area with restaurants and "regular" city stuff you should have lots of choices. My husband knows by now what I am up to so he doesn't think it is weird the HUGE meals I eat for RM only days. I usually have 4-6 Cup salads (in the largest Pyrex nesting bowl) and then another good portion of protein, then whatever carbs I want. I try for 1 part veggies, 1 part protein, and 1-2 parts carbs. I tend to be more carb heavy than others on my various CAD groups post about in their meals but I am still very slowly losing eating like this and I don't have to count calories or extreme diet and still lose so I am not complaining one bit!

Hi All, I am starting this eating plan once again (actually I started a couple of days ago) and thought I would join on here for support. I have done many diets, and gained and lost lots of weight, but I always give up. I believe that cad/calp can be a WOE of life and doable. Last year I lost 75 lbs on the Dukan diet (which was easy to stick to) than I had a 6 month stall and a lot of stress and gave up. Needless to say I have gained 50 of those lbs back. It was not a WOE for life. I need something easy and sensible and this seems to be the one. Looking forward to doing this journey with others!

Awesome and glad you joined in! This WOE is very doable and easy. I am kind of surprised I even had to go off for 4 days because with a bit of planning I could have actually stayed on for even that time frame. I have been doing it for over 9 months and besides vacation, I have only been off plan for a total of maybe 5 days during that entire time!

If you can remember to only eat protein and veggies, then in a one hour period a "balanced" meal (1/3 each of protein, 1/3 veggies, 1/3 carbs) then you can make this work. There are even those of us who do mainly RM's only. I am one of the few who actually posts about it but we are out there. If you read the original book and the newer CALP book Rachael Heller discloses that it actually how she lost 150 lbs.

If you decide to do RM only my advice would be to really EAT and not worry about calories. Be sure to get very full, maybe even a bit overfull. That way you will be satisfied the other 23 hours of the day. Also, if you decide on RM for breakfast, you most likely will need a CM later as I have found for some reason it is easier for me to fast most of the day and be able to eat the RM and be happy the other 23 hours. For some reason when I eat my RM ealier, I do get hungry again later. I seem to lose a bit faster with RM for breakfast so I am trying it (again) for a while but my main regimen has been to do RM for lunch time and fast the rest of the day. I am not knocking CM's and do eat them from time to time if I am hungry. One thing on this WOE is I do not force myself to starve or be hungry.

Hope you have success and I am off to look up that diet you mentioned since I have never heard of it. LOL

I have a question and was hoping somebody might have the answer. You can only have coffee with cream once a day. Is it ok to have another cup with your low carb meals since it's low carb? I really miss my coffee.

According to the book if it is black coffee you can have it any time. If it is with the cream, you can have it once a day outside of your RM. That means either as a snack on it's own consumed in a 15 minute time frame OR with one of your CM's. The cream is supposed to be 2 ounces or less. Also, I read a letter by the Heller's that said you are supposed to sub the cream for cheese you may have later at a CM but I didn't remember reading that in either the CAD or CALP books.

For the record with my experimentation I found I couldn't have coffee AT ALL even black and decaf. I gained weight. I only have it during RM's if they are morning ones now. I went a month with no coffee, then 2 days in a row had decaf iced americanos black and gained 2 pounds that week! So you have to see how you do. The Heller's in the CALP book discuss steering away from caffeine so I believe myself to be extra sensitive to it and only have decaf now even during RM.

Well so far weight is staying in the 216 range all week. I am going to try a bit more high fat based off a friend who eats similar to me and she is in maintenence in the 106-108 lb range and is doing well. I'll report how it goes.

She is a marathoner and normally runs in the 10-15 mile per day range and has cut way back on running (mainly just walking now after years of daily runs) and also upped her fat content and is actually maintaining and losing. She used to do one meal a day but has been experimenting with additional meals and is a big fan of Gary Taubes and Peter Attia.

Today I wasn't hungry all day and my RM yesterday was way more carbs than I'd like to admit. Today's RM:

1 lg ribeye steak
1 whole head rommaine lettuce with ranch dsg
1 slice Costco brand take and bake canadian bacon and pineapple pizza
1 large iced decaf mocha with 4 oz whole milk
4 choc chip cookies
2 C safeway brand black walnut ice cream

My weights:

Mon 216.6 Tues 216.4 Wed 216.2

Still not in the 213-215 range I had been well over a month ago but I have noticed this is how it goes for me with seeing a new low a good month or two before it becomes my daily avg. Again I know if I cut back my portions and carbs and also upped my exercise I'd see better faster results but I cannot really complain since I am just never hungry and when I do eat I get to really eat!

There is a CAD thread on welltellme.com Called "I lost 25 pounds on Carbohydrate Addict's Diet" or something similar that I post on that when I started 9 months ago had over 12,000 page views and is now up to over 61,000! Just the other day it was only 60,000 so A LOT of people are checking out this diet! I am cross posting about it here if anyone wants to google it and post because I am the only poster there for the last several months and continue to do so because I know people are interested in learning about CAD and CALP but I don't want my posts to be the ONLY exposure people get so if anyone else doing CAD/CALP wants to post there or to at least maybe give their experience and story there it probably would be helpful for the readers. I am not sure why it is not a more active thread but I do tell them about these other groups I am on because I am a firm believer in support for any diet to be more successful is a key ingredient!

Teri, are you still out there? I just checked out your site "lowcarbcompatible" for your dark chocolate almond bark and clusters recipes. I read some of your recent journals. I am glad I am not the only one who experiments with this WOE. I think for some of us we will always be curious and try to push things to the limits- it is just our nature! I love the flexibility of this WOE and I think it more than any other "diet" allows us to quickly see the difference in how we feel, not just weight gain or loss but the other things that I swear I never noticed not even on Atkins! I will be cross posting this to the various CAD sites I've seen you on because I am not sure if you check in or not. I think of you from time to time still especially because we are both from WA and raise rabbits and all the other similarities like starting wts and goal wts, etc. Wishing you the best!

Going to work a little more at staying on plan. It works if I stick to it....

Soooo glad you are still here! I get so lonely sometimes! LOL Just hang in there. You can do it. I remember your posts about how good you felt on it and how even though it was slow you lost 10 lbs and were doing so good. Just get back on that horse! I gained 8 pounds in 4 days and was so horrified I am glad I am back too because I was so tired it was awful.

Well I cheat.. I can't stick to way of eating that makes me miserable, that's why the strict LC/Atkins thing didn't work at all for me, I hated it. When I found this diet it felt right from day one and now I know I'll be happy to stay on it.
But I drink tea - all day. I compromised with using Soya Light instead of fresh milk, or sometimes Alpro Light (almond milk). They have 0.something carbs and to me that's fine. I'm losing a pound every second day now- (after a steep loss then stall on LC) -and have lost 16lbs in total, just started the CAD on 18th July.

I was busy all day and didn't have time to eat so I will have my ususal dinner of ribeye, salad doused in ranch, Haagen Dazs ice cream, diet coke.

Well that is incredible! Whatever you are doing it is the right thing and don't quit or change a thing. My problem is I have too much fun with Oriana playing around with my WOE I am going to have to find something that works well for me and just stick with it! LOL But I love the flexibility of CAD and I just do my best to stay within it's boundaries (for the most part) and I can experiment to my heart's content!

I have been at work last 2 days so I can't do the ice cream but I am doing this for my one hour and RM only days:

Large 4-5 cup salad
3-4 tbsp ranch dsg
1 large ribeye steak
16 ounce iced decaf mocha with half & half
2-3 chocolate chip cookies
2-3 oreo cookies

weight has been bouncing from 216.4 to 217 for several days back to 216.4 lbs today. Hoping to actually see a dip down to the 215 lb range and if not I will go back to my usual Large Lunch RM time and eating 1 part veggies, 1 part protein/fat and 1-2 parts carbs.

I'll keep you posted on the wt loss. However I have been NOT HUNGRY at all eating like this which is great

New on This Board and New to CAD.......

Hi friends, I just started about 4 days ago. I am not hungry, thankfully, but I do feel sleepy and lethargic. Will this pass? I have a lot of weight to lose and I need all the help and tips that I can get.

It's really hot here in Texas and it's not helping this feeling of dizziness that I have.

Drink drink drink. This WOE since it can be low carb you will lose a lot of water weight to begin with. I never felt dizzy but maybe it is the heat? I also got more energy. Maybe you aren't getting as much caffeine as before or something. Just hang in there. Be sure to get lots of veggies and protein. Some people go over on the carbs but that is ok as long as you are balanced with the veggies and protein so don't skimp on those!

I know that it makes it tougher when no one is posting.........and if I don't check in here it usually means I am falling off plan. Trying to get back at it.

Glad. To be here

Just keep coming back!!! I keep many threads going and this one is no different. I know some of it has to do with it being Summer. Most of us want to look good in swimsuit season so we diet all the year but once Summer rolls around many fall off plan. I have seen tumble weeds blowing through a lot of CAD groups and threads but I do try to post at least once every 3 days or so.

At least back in control enough to eat 3 meals plus 1 snack.

cutting back (again) on diet pop and SF drinks.

That is starting again, for me.

Hi, I've posted over at the One Meal A Day thread, but I have been reading all these really good, informative posts.. I decided to try the one meal a day, and if necessary have a snack of boiled egg, cheese, celery, etc. This Is my first day, so I just finished my first RM, having 1 cup spaghetti, 1 cup meat sauce, cauliflower, cole slaw , and a big salad.. I am so stuffed. haven't eaten this much at a meal since Thanksgiving. I plan to continue this because I am currently finishing up a course of steroids because of a bad allergic reaction.. taking them really messed up my previous weight loss, so I am hoping this will work for me, it seems to be a great way to eat.

Welcome! I too am probably going to have some meat and salad later because I did my carb meal (RM) early today compared to the last few days and am getting hungry. The beauty of CAD is that you do what works for you!
