First TOPS meeting

22 ppl, 2 men. A bit corny, but genuinely friendly and supportive. They all go out to breakfast after, and it appears there is a financial penalty for gaining a pound, or part of one, plus five dollars a month, plus quarters for something.

I have some confusion but I think she said they pay 10.00 for gaining a pound. I may be the only person there still working, not that I'm younger, but for both financial and mental fitness reasons. To me this is a lot for gaining part of a pound, but I may have it wrong. And if that's right, it may indicate a degree of seriousness about weight loss that I can appreciate.

I'm not sure I want to breakfast either, but since I'm convinced I need to work on connections it may make sense. At least breakfast is easy LCHF.

We pay 10 cents for gaining a pound and pay $2 per month. There was an initial joining fee of $29 that includes a monthly TOPS magazine subscription.

ETA Just remembered we have a voluntary quarter thing which is a total of 50 cents. One quarter goes into a basket and the loser of the week wins this basket, the second quarter basket goes to a member who's name is drawn from the pool of those who participated, if the winner of that drawing gained that week the money is not given and is added to the next weeks drawing. Also we can donate $1 a month and the loser of the month wins the proceeds.

Wow! $10 would be a lot for a gain! That would probably help motivate. We donate 25˘ if we gain but it is optional.

National dues are $28 a year which includes the magazine. That should be the price for every chapter in the US. It is different in Canada. Our monthly dues are $4. The monthly dues varies as it is set by individual chapters. We do put in a dime each week and the best loser receives that money.

Not so much now but when I first joined I was always winning something, I have probably come close to winning back every dollar I have spent! Some of our members go out to dinner after our meeting but I don't go. It is almost 8pm by then I am ready to just get on home.

Don't know

Maybe she meant to say 10 cents instead of ten dollars, it was a rushed explanation. Or maybe I misheard -- I suspect cents makes more sense than dollars. I already paid the yearly fee online when I was looking for a meeting.

Our weekly dues are $3 a week or if we pay the whole month at once it's $2.50 a week which usually comes out to $10 a month. We pay a quarter if we gain but it's only for those who want to and at the end of 3 months there will be a winner of the whole coin jar.

Our group votes down anything that punishing us for gaining weight. I think it would motivate me and maybe others, though. Even though I love my group sometimes the corny positivaty gets old. "Susan, you gained 5 pounds. That's ok, we are glad you came". blah, blah. Sometime I need to hear "come on, girl. get with it!" :-) But maybe that's just me :-)

If you gain up to a lb its .25 so a 1.25 gain will cost me .50 cents & the gainers name is put into a basket to draw a name for the person giving the program next week SOOO I try really hard to avoid that gaining basket..lol I don't remember the dues I think I just paid it all up front. Our Star of the week lost last week & this week also = a 2.00 payout And then Star of the mo = biggest loser with no gains is 4.00. All the chapters do thing differently. I so hope you like your.. I really like the ladies at mine... And some of them do go out to eat afterwards. Some of it is very confusing But welcome to the wonderful world of TOPS

There is a suggestion on the TOPS website that mentions paying the piggy bank if you gain. Nobody seems to have a problem with it in my group. What kills me is the "loser of the week". Some people GAIN upwards of 5 lbs...then the next week they lose it and they win loser of the week. This happens again and again with the same people. I don't think it's very fair for the average person who has a REALLY stellar week and loses 3 lbs but gets no recognition because some people lose and gain so erratically. Does anyone else feel this is not really fair?

Our group you have to lose 2 weeks in a row.. to be one of the "Stars" & it's not on the amount lost.

We had that problem so about 6 years ago. We decided it was not fair. In order to be the best loser of the week, you could not have gained the week before. That way it rewards the actual losers. We would have the same people winning every 2 weeks or so. They would lose then gain it back then lose. So that stopped us rewarding that behavior. Kismet you might bring that up in an executive meeting.

It could be something that's brought up but it not carried out yet since it's not in the bylaws. Also, it would have to be something like if you had a gain last week you have to lose more than the gain to be loser of the week. Last week someone gained .4 then the next week lost 6.4. That to me is a true loss. Someone who gains 8 lbs one week then loses 7 of those pounds is not a true loss. I dont' know if I'm making any sense but there just has to be a better system. To top it off, it is usually 2 of our board members who gain then lose big numbers so I'm not sure how that will fly with them!

we pay a dime when we gain.
I have a question. I have still not been back to the meetings, Mostly because of time. I often have my granddaughter till 6:30 or layer on Tuesdays. Our weigh in is between 6 and 6:30, but then the meetings don't start till 7 and go till about 8. I can take Kay with me to weigh in, but then I would have to leave to take her home, and then come back for the meeting at 7 (assuming DH is home by then for her to stay with if DD is on an afternoon shift) and it really is a pain. That is at least 1 hour and 40 minutes IF I arrive at 6:20(pretty much the latest I can get there and still get on the scale before the 6:30 cutoff.
Do your meetings/weigh ins take that much time?

My opinion

Curve control, I think the real question is why does your meeting have a half hour gap between the end of weighing and the start of the meeting? Surely 5-10 minues would be adequate.
I would suggest you call and talk to your leader and others about this, as it is very possible you are not the only one negatively affected, and maybe a change could be made to accommodate people who don't have that half hour to waste but want to attend meetings.
Or maybe not, but there is no harm in bringing up a problem and asking for help in arriving at a solution.

Ours is a 15 min gap between end of weigh in and the meeting starting. This gives the recorders time to add up the gains/losses of the week, month etc. and do the quarter basket drawing.

I think 3/4-1 lb. is awesome. Especially as you are so close to goal!! It does get harder when you are close to goal. The weight loss slows down but you will do it.

Our weigh-in begins officially at 5:45 but we start at 5:30 if there are people there. It is over at 6:15 and they get back to the rest of us within 5-10 minutes usually. Once in a while it takes them 15 minutes to go over the stats for best loser, net loss, etc.

we start the meeting with best loser, net loss and all that so that is the first 10 min of the meeting. I will mention it to the leader tonight.

You're group sounds active, our leader just kind of half halfheartedly mentioned that there would be a rally. I didn't even go to my meeting last week, but will go this Wed. It seems like I get bored and unmotivated and want to quit but then look forward to going again after I miss a week.
