It definitely feels more natural for me. I made my cut off time noon, so on my UD's, I have one "final meal" right before noon, and then eat my DD meal at about 6pm, then just drink coffee the next day until I can start my UD at noon. It fits very well for the way my appetite works. I'm way too heavy to be bouncing up, and I really want something to work, lol.
MUDDDY JUDDD BUDDD - I LOVE it!!!!

Way to shake things up and find what works for you, HG!

Whenever I try to do "real" JUDDD, I mess up almost every single DD. So some sort of MUDDD/Fast 5 works better for me--psychologically & socially, anyway, if not for actual weight loss!

My weight has been going down a bit this week, finally. I've been taking a lot of L-Glutamine, and I think it's helping suppress hunger.

I really need to remember my supplements every day. I've noticed that the DD's (before I went to this) where I took them (including L-Glutamine) were much easier.

I just need to make it part of my routine instead of talking about it.

Just wanted to update that I just weighed, and I dropped 4 lbs overnight. I'm finally almost back to where I'd previously dropped to the first week.

I'll be having a couple of small tacos, left over from last night, for lunch in about an hour! lol

Another update: My body really seems to be responding to this, and I feel so much less deprived and panicky during my DD portion of the program. I had a bit of a panic when I bounced up 4 lbs for yesterday's weigh-in, but this morning I'm showing a loss of 15 lbs since last Monday! Definitely motivating me to stay on track!

My 10yo son made brownies yesterday during my DD hours. I was able to resist knowing I can have one at noon today.

I'm so happy I tried this method, and I feel like it will make it easier to go to the more traditional rotation if it stops working - it's helping me get past the mental block I was having with the DD calories.

Excellent!
I do hate that "deprived, panicky feeling"!
I can fast all day if I know I can have dinner, but night/day/night doesn't work for me...maybe because I have blood sugar issues.

Thank you, thank you!

Btw--I find the scale bounces aren't as dramatic on this schedule. It's easier to see if I'm *really* losing, stalling, or gaining when the scale's not going up & down 3...4...5...6lbs every day!

M is for "mixed".....mixed up day down day.
It's just a 24-hr schedule; for example, your "day" could start at 6pm instead of when you wake up.

It's not really different than JUDDD except for that.
But we call it MUDDD because some JUDDD adherents feel it it's too different from Dr J's plan "as written".

Hi! I just read this entire thread and am pretty intrigued by it. I was wondering if you all are still following muddd and how it is working out for you?
I like the premise of Juddd however I find late at night on dd of I'm still hungry things fall apart, so I'm hoping this may stop that.
I was planning on pattern 3 from post 17.
Thanks for all of the great information!

Yes, I still do it most of the time, although sometimes I do "Fast 5"--fast all day until the afternoon/early evening, eat a small lunch and a "normal" dinner without really counting calories. Fast 5 is also really great when I'm going to a party or a friend's house and I don't really know how many calories are in the food (beer, wine, etc ).

Hey Jenny! Your fellow JUDDD Buddd here!

I'm getting diet fatigue with DDs after 2 months on JUDDD. I just don't want to eat 500 to even 700 a day anymore if I can help it. I did a few days of Fast 5 and counting my calories at 1,300 a day which feels really comfortable to me. However, do you think the fasting period of 19 hours activates the SIRT1? It seems everything I've read points to 24 or 36 hours. Dr. J, page 145 - "...eating 75% of required calories every day activates the SIRT1- mediated calorie restriction mechanism, and we believe that this level of restriction for a 36-hour period of lower energy, as provided by the Alternate Day Diet is sufficient to turn on SIRT1, although not as intensively as lower intakes on the down day." (Some other sites said 24 hours if I remember correctly.)

Now that 75% interests me, as I was hoping to find a way to raise my DD calories to 75%, but then I'd have to lower UD calories or there'd be no calorie deficit and no weight loss. Trying to get the best of both worlds. Anyway, I'm trying to think of a way to even out some of the calories per day, without it just becoming a low calorie diet. Want to keep the SIRT1 activated. (I don't want to switch back and forth between JUDDD, MUDDD and other IFs either.) What are your thoughts?

P.S. Oh, the 75% would look something like UD 1500, DD 1100. That would equal my 1300 calories a day which would make me happy. Maybe I just answered my own question. Well, no, first question was the 19 hour SIRT1 question.

Hi, Heather!!!

I don't have any answers for you...I don't think I've ever seen a definitive answer on "how many hours to fast"...and I haven't lost any weight in a couple months so I am not giving anybody any advice on calories...just wanted to say

Ok, this is really fascinating me.

I believe in IFing & it's benefits and want, want, want JUDDD to work for me (and it has in the past to the tune of about 40 lbs), but the DDs are killing me. I rarely get through one very well and it is the nighttime hungries that get to me more than anything. It is easier for me not to eat at all than nibble on stuff and I could very easily fast all day at work and then eat a nice dinner 3-4 days a week, and on the other days pack a big lunch to eat at 3:00 or so before I go home (I don't often have time to eat until then anyway). Weekends are usually late big breakfast, late lunch and then very light dinner. I don't feel like to would take too much tweaking to my natural patterns to make this work.

I am leaving to go camping for a week in the morning and will stick to JUDDD as much as possible while gone. Once I get back and go back to work I think I'll give MUDDD a go. I downloaded Eat Stop Eat and another IF book to read while I'm on vacation.

For the record, I think we should call this plan Pirate JUDDDing. As Captn Barbosa said, "It's really more guidelines than actual rules."

I just read this whole thread and the original by PirateJenny! I love this idea, since I too have trouble sleeping on an empty stomach, namely on DDs. I think I will give MUDDD a try starting Monday! I'm so excited to see how it goes! If anybody is still out there MUDDDing, let me know, we can support each other

Thinking about this too, Marika. I wonder if PJ still MUDDDs? I haven't figured out where the M comes in though. I read the first few pages and all I see is UD and DD, half days each. Where is Mid Day? To be redundant, if I started out today on a DD at 7 am, then UD would start at 3pm? I usually don't eat dinner until 6-8 pm...call me confused, lol. So if I had a UD dinner, then I would have a UD breakfast, UD lunch (I can't eat lunch before 1 pm, so how would that work?), DD dinner, DD breakfast, DD lunch...UD dinner...

I've been reading this with interest. I am seriously thinking of trying this MUDDDing. My eating cycles are so messed up right now (I've been working somewhat of a swing shift on some weekends and mostly 2nd/3rd shift most of the rest of the time) My eating pattern is seriously messed up. I'm not hungry during the morning and early afternoon, and then I have serious munchy problems later on in the evening/night hours. This sounds like it would be perfect for me!!

Hi Joedi, followed your posts on older JUDDD threads and was impressed with your reaching goal and your comments on conquering the binging. Was wondering what you're doing now since I hadn't seen you post on JUDDD. Please fill me in on your progress. Are you still in maintenance?

Hi Carolina!
Thanks for your kind words
Yes, still in maintenance...I weight every friday, and as of last friday I was 134lbs.

I did juddd for my weightloss, and for most of my maintainance, then did a month or two of 5:2, but was starting to feel a little depressed on DD mornings..and found I was eating a bit much on UD evenings, in preperation for my DD.
I was still maintaining, but didn't feel my behavour was healthy, and my depression was not good for me, or DH!
I tried muddding, which is very similar to Eat Stop Eat...fasting from say 4pm one day, to 4pm the next.
I kept a diary of my progress, and found I fine on the days I had to wait till 4pm to eat...but on the days I had to STOP eating at 4pm...I was overeating again!
Then one day DH and I had a day out planned...and I thought, I will do 16/8 today, as I knew with getting ready, travelling etc, I wouldn't have time to do my days eating by 4pm....and that DH would be wanting a nice dinner out too!
And I loved it! My window was 3-11pm, and it was a breeze. After judding, the hunger was no problem, the day flew by, and I didnt end up eating till after 4 anyway...so ended up with a 7 eating hour window.

I have always been a delayed gratification type of girl...and have always ate the majority of my food later on in the day, so waiting to eat really suits me fine.
Food tastes so much better after a 16-17 hour fast, and you just cant eat as much in the shorter window as you can over the day.

I am much less depressed too...each day I know I will get something nice to eat later, so no feeling deprived on a DD...or going mad on an UD.

I have been doing 16/8 for 2 weeks now, and my weight is holding steady...I have just introduced a morning bulletproof coffee into my routine, and I am watching with interest to see if I can keep maintaining with it in my diet...it makes fasting a doddle...fills you up, but had no effect on insulin levels.

For some reason, the extra fat in my diet is really reducing the amount of crap I want to eat too!

I love playing with numbers, and from my calculations, I am fasting only a few hours less on a weekly basis than I did on Juddd, and I would say I am eating a bit less food, as I could really eat my fill on those UUAA days!

I am planning to buy the 8 hour diet book, as I love to read, and I am really hoping I can hold my weight steady with this woe, as it makes me feel calm and content.

hugs

Jo

Jo, I'm so glad you found something that works well for you. I don't know if I could do 4-4 myself, but it does sound like it's perfect for you. I'm interested to see how the BPC affects your maintenance as well. Please keep us updated!
