Hi, STBS. Yes, Strong Medicine was written by Dr. Blake Donaldson, in 1961, who wrote the book after several decades of working with patients who had allergies or were overweight.

For some patients he allowed only meat, water and 1/2 cup of black coffee, three times per day. The meat could be cooked with herbs, celery leaves, and black pepper, for flavoring, but no salt. With some patients, he allowed a potato, or even an alcoholic drink, or a piece of fruit, but I don't recall him allowing more than one of those. If you need to know, I'll see if I can find that.

His book is not a diet book per se, but a series of chapters of how he treated his patients, as well as his own history as a doctor.

People have extrapolated the following diet from his book:

For each meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner: eat meat of three parts lean and one part fat. In the 1950s and early 1960s, stores and butcher shops sold meat with the fat on it, not all cut off, as they do now. Also, patients were instructed to grind their own meat and not buy ground meat due to rancidity, injected water and additives. It could be roast, steak, hamburger, chops, or any cut the person wished.

The meat must weigh eight ounces, in cooked weight. No less.

After ideal weight is reached, add one hotel serving of a potato or other vegetable, or a half a grapefruit. If weight does not stay stable at ideal weight, go back to meat only.

Additionally, he had his patients take a walk for 30 minutes outdoors before eating breakfast.

He also told them to go to bed and train themselves to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day, and to have a set schedule.

Three glasses of water between breakfast and lunch, and three more between lunch and supper. No water after supper.

The demitasse of black coffee with each meal. No coffee between meals. Older people who could not sleep after coffee at supper were to leave out the coffee at supper time.

The book is brilliant and well worth finding. I bought mine through addall.com or abebooks.com. If you check those sites, sooner or later, one will turn up at a reasonable price, not a collector's price.

He addresses many problems of allergies, problematic vegetables, thinking, life, and other fascinating subjects.

He cared deeply about his patients. It is a beautiful book and my gold standard of eating.

I wish I could have known him.

STSB, Dr. Michael Eades says that eggs are fetal meat, so why not?

There is a meat and egg support thread here, if you'd like to join in. The parameters are much looser than what some have decided are Dr. Donaldson's, so you could adjust meals to your own preference.

Dr. Donaldson says in the book that if someone is not allergic to eggs, fish, butter, Hollandaise, or cream, or vegetables, then they can be eaten, if desired. The diet which some people have decided comes out of his book is not as benevolent or inclusive as Dr. Donaldson seems to have been. His beef-only was used as an elimination diet to see if the patients still had allergic symptoms when what we now call trigger foods were removed. For some people, the avoidance of cream, eggs, or other things, was for a lifetime.

The meat-and-eggers are very supportive and inclusive. Whatever you'd like to do is fine! If you can afford it and wish to eat steak three times a day, we'll support you.

So the eskimo is another (or the orginal) verson of MEC diet?
cool I know how to do that!
since modern meat is so "lowfat" would you add fish oil caps or Omega caps to your vits?
right now I take Wm "centrum" silver and HBP tabs every day.

Hi, STBS. I add whatever fats I wish. I take cod liver oil on days I don't eat fish, for the nutrients.
I use butter, beef fat, and some cream, both heavy and light, to add fat to my food plan. You could use coconut oil for cooking, and olive oil for cold things, if wished.

Hope to see you in the Meat-and-Eggers thread.

Good morning!!
I have to be @ work @ 0730 AM so I'm planning my walk after work. I'm going to start my eskimo/MEC on Monday after Mommyday weekend
(we have a BBQ to go to tonight, Sat AND Sunday!!)
Here's my plan so far (still needs tweeking) M-F I "brownbag" brekkie and lunch so thats the easy part of staying on plan Its when I meet up with DH I have trouble
brekkie
boiled eggs or scrambled egg omelette
water, crystal light or iced tea (unsweet or art.sugar)
lunch
bunless cheeseburger or meat
water,srystal light or tea
supper
repeat
snack
jerky,boiled eggs, cheese

I'm going to buy some REAL butter (DH likes country crock marg)
EVOO, and maybe some bacon fat or lard for frying eggs
how does that sound?
the hard thing to give up is my salt shaker I'm a salt-a-holic but I have HBP and need to do it!!

STBS, I think it sounds like a great start. You can adjust things as you go along, and find what works well for you, etc.

This is the Main Lobby and not the Other Plans or Challenges sub-forum, so it'd be great if you could post in the Meat-and-Eggers thread.

All the best to you.
