So far so good, have had 4 days of alternating( just 1 meal a day(IF), with days of eating (a 5 hour window-2 meals(Fast Five) Then had a weekend doing the 5 hour thing.(Fast 5) All lowcarb.
Weight seems to be beginning to go down, after a week in hospital in Oct I had been yo-yoing 10 lbs, that seems to be gone. More important, this feels right, on days that I am tired I can do the 5 hour window, other days I can make it 23 hours.
Dear Santa, I want me some SIRT gene..

Happy Holidays to all on this thread! I am still experimenting with IF in various ways. I don't do strictly Fast Five and do not do Eat Stop Eat, I just do my own thing but am getting more and more serious about making it work for me as a WOE!

I drop by every now and then. I don't see anyone I knew from last year and hope they are all well, too.

I am also a drop-by-er, and I like to swing through and see how everyone is doing. I have tried IF in the past and found that it is the only way I can lose weight - normal low carb just makes me maintain indefinitely. But I find IF to be so difficult! Going all day without eating makes me feel like a big cry baby. I keep trying to work up the courage to try it again.

You don't have to go all day without eating. Your eating window can be any time of day you choose. I eat between 11:30 am and 4:30 pm. It's much easier for me to do nights without eating than days without eating.

I have mentioned that there hapens to be a difference in how we handel carbs during the day. In normal people they handel carbs best in the morning and become slightly
insulin resistant as the day goes on. This is one reason why a glucose tollerence test
is done early in the morning because if it is done at 2pm a lot of normal people will give
a false positive for diabetes. But in diabetecs this patern is reversed we are most insulin
resistant early in the morning and become less insulin resistant as the day goes on. I
am wondering if this has any bearing on which of us finds eating early or late best for
us. I am one that finds not eating till 1 or 2 pm very easy to do and realy am usualy
not realy hungry when I do eat then. So today instead of being a standard DD I might
just try a total fast. AS the good DR. said fasting on the DD may even be better if you
can do it. I just hadn't thaught about doing it till now. Well here goes it's 1.01 AM I just
wonder if I can make it to friday at 1 pm?

Personally, I think that when we eat depends on our biorhythms to a large extent. When I was in high school and college, I rarely was hungry in the mornings, but I was also a 'night person' who was most energized from 4 pm to midnight.

Now in my old age, I'm definitely a morning person. I'm a very early riser, and if I don't get it done by noon, it doesn't get done. And I not only eat breakfast, but it's my biggest meal of the day.

I was doing like tiva using a 5 hour eating window (fast5) and doing quite well.
But I relaxed a bit and have been eating to much on DD's or skiping a few of
them from time to time. And I just can't lose any weigth on just doing Fast5 .
So I am sort of having to start over with a couple of 20% or less DD's and yesterday
qualified as a real DD with a whopping 20 calories for the days total. I was also
reading in Dr. Johnson's book The Alternet Day Diet that just doing a fast in the
20 hour range like just eating one meal a day may not be long enough to realy
work at bringing about changes like redusing insulin resistance. I quess I am lucky
that fasting for a day does not seem to be all that hard for me.

I also had a little setback because of a diabetic med. I tried it 4 years ago and it made
me gain weight but I thought I would try it again. Well the first week went ok the second
week my weight loss just about quit and then the last 2 weeks I regained about 6 lbs.
Well it's scratch that medication off my list. The only reason I wanted to give it another
try is because if I could take it I would save a little over $1000 a year. I am just hopeing
that 6 lbs is water weigth. I stoped taking it yeaterday so realy should see a big wosh
in the next day or so if it was just water. I may just let today be a DD also so I can get
set for having Christmas be an UD. Perhaps a new song is in order " All I want for christmas is this water weight gone"

Hi all! Well, I've been sticking to IF since Thanksgiving hoping I could maintain at least. The good news is that although I gained 3 pounds during Thanksgiving since then I've lost those 3 plus 5 more! IF is definitely agreeing with me

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday

Hi,
I am in need of some help.
I have been reading up on IF and find myself very confused.

Some background,
I have been low carbing for 7 months.
I have had great results, down over 60 pounds.
I have been eating under 20 carbs the whole time.
As my wight loss slowed down I kept lowering the
number of carbs. I am now down to almost no carbs.
My weight loss has pretty much stop all together.
I am bewildered and in shock. I never, never cheat.
At least 70% of my calories come from fat.

I am looking for ways to start the scale moving in the
right direction again.

When I read about IF I often find it said that you can eat
what ever you "want" when you are not fasting. I am very afraid
of eating high carb food especially sugar and grains. I actually
would not put high carb foods in the category of foods that
I "want" to eat.

So my first question is will IF work with a very low carb woe?

The other thing I am confused about is the fasting time. There seem
to be so many variations. I decided to try fasting by eating dinner
only(on the fasting days). I was talking this over with my husband
and he suggested that instead I try eating a big breakfast and then not
eating until the next morning. I have a gut feeling this will work
better for me.

My second question is does it make any difference what time of
the day you eat before and after the fast?

After writing this I am thinking I will probably have to work out what is
best for me by trial and error.

Thanks so much for reading this. I would love to hear about any
successes or failures with IF.

Reading all the posts, it really is true we each have our own pattern, I seem to be doing a lowcarb Fast Five, I guess, from 12 to 5 pm. Then I seem to do ok in the evenings.
I am lowcarb, and a little Dukan( alternating protein days with protein-veg days). All this sounds a little goofy; but I hope I can get some long term loss with this.
In the past, everything works for me, then I get into stalls. Anyway, these are the foods I like the most and I don't have to think too much with the 5 hour limit. If I stall I'll just wait it out. My goal is a pound a week.

I do fast-5 (a 5 hour eating window) with low-carb. My eating window is from 11 am to 4 pm, and you can choose whatever time you prefer. I also try to mix up days a bit, so I alternate some days with 2 meals in my window, and some days with only 1 meal in my window. With IF, i can eat a lot more veggies and nuts than I can if I do straight LC. Good luck! A morning eating window will be fine, if that's what works the best for you. And by all means, stick to low carb. But do feel free to experiment with eating more veggies, nuts, and things slightly higher on Atkin's carb ladder.

Hi, All! I happened to stumble upon this thread and found it interesting, and also found some of my "JUDDD BUDDDS" familiar faces here!

I will have to go back through and read more, but I have been doing forms of IF (besides JUDDD) lately.

I started LC in the summer, then found JUDDD in October, then went to what a member called Pirate Jenny termed as "MUDDD," which is a 24 hour schedule of JUDDD (JUDDD is normally around 36 hours).

I reached my goals by doing J/MUDDD's calorie cycling, but over the last week I had started waiting to eat until until noon or early afternoon each day, meaning a minimum of 14-15 hour fasts daily. I did this because it works with my natural appetite and because I wanted to reap more fasting/near fasting benefits.

I dropped from around 145# before Christmas to 139# today! And I was not trying to lose, but was simply maintaining. And this was during all the holiday eating.

I believe those little fasts on most days helped contribute to this new, unexpected weight loss.

I eat moderate carb, though I've been naturally going for more whole, healthy fat and protein type foods when I can lately.

Well, I may pop back in to say more, but I intend to read more definitely, and wanted to say "Hi" to all of you, and to say that like you, I believe in short-term fasting in whatever method one wants to do it for health and weight loss too!

MAINTENANCE since 11/12/11, & have lost more weight. I shake things up all the time with my version of Pirate Jenny's MUDDD, my "Fast 5" & other IF. ...low-moderate fat....and eating "healthy" foods 75+% of the time which lets me have real life and indulgences too I've reached my goals, improved my health & appearance, and enjoy my lifetime woe!

Thanks for your help.
I started today. I had my usual
big breakfast and have not been hungry
at all until dinner time. It wasn't that
bad. Was able to fix everyones meal with
out any major suffering on my part. I have not
decided how many times a week I will do the
fast. I am just going to see how it goes.
I would love to add a few nut or cheese back!
It is kind of exciting.
Hopefully I will get some results!
