Non-Specific LC/VLC/ZC - #3

This thread was started to provide a place for those with a Low Carb diet who are not on a specific name brand diet. The general idea is that carbs are the problem, not the solution.

This is the third thread in this series. The population has drifted over time and the majority of folks here are either VLC or ZC now. Everyone is welcome but if you are looking for ways to add carbs back to your diet you will probably find more support somewhere else.

Hi Guys.

I did really well on LC for quite awhile but the last two years have found me sliding in my WOE and I have had a 40 pound regain - I have returned to LC this week - it's the only WOE that works for me and I lose best at VLC or ZC.

I look forward to getting to know all of you as we kick butt in our weightloss. I am just glad to say that I have stopped it and started going the right direction again before I gained it ALL back.

Yes, thank you, Looweewoo, for the new thread.

Looweewoo, I searched for the posts you wrote on nocturnal ketosis, and one in particular stood out to me, in which you mentioned eating a few carbs at breakfast to "trigger" (my word, don't remember exactly what you wrote) the process of being awake, then tapering off carbs as the day goes on. I have noticed that if I eat a small amount of plant food, with breakfast, say 1 or 2 T. of a low starch veg, then I am more alert and satisfied. Otherwise it is easy to mistranslate the need for that 2 or 3 carbs into wanting more food altogether, or more fat. I really appreciated your posts on this. They confirmed some things in my own experience which I had not yet named so specifically. I do better with that 2 or 3 carbs, than without them.

Do you know if, other than maintaining a constant blood sugar level, there is a biochemical reason for some folks doing well eating their main food early in the day, some folks late, and some at regular intervals throughout the day? VLCers and ZCers seem to cover the whole spectrum of when meals are eaten.

Thanks very much.

Thank you to everyone who responded and thanks Looweewoo for the new thread!

here is the great warm pudding recipe.I love how it has CO in it and I have been having it for breakfast  YUMMYY!!

RECIPES FOR EGG/PROTEIN FAST.....

I have to add that I couldn't do it for 30 seconds as that just cooked the eggs,so I just cook it for 10 secs at a time and that works for me.

So far the week has been good for me but I am not weighing myself until TOM is gone and the suspense is KILLING ME!! lol!

I know I really need to increase my exercise still I am going to exercise at least every other day for 30 mins on my treadmill.

Hugs!

Hi all - I've decided to reign myself in and get strict in order to lose 10lbs by Christmas

I have no problem sticking to two zero carb meals a day. Actually I only eat when hungry - two meals is not a concious choice, it's just what my hunger dictates. My problem recently has been wine. I live in a wine producing area and indeed walk my dogs in the vineyards two minutes from my house, but I can usually leave it alone. However, in the last month I have had three lots of guests and wine has been consumed throughout each visit! I haven't gained - but I've hardly lost (only 1lb for the whole four weeks)

SO - from now on - NO WINE. I'm also giving up coffee as I have read that caffeine provokes an insulin response

Meat, fat, water, herbal teas and the occasional dollop of fatty creme fraiche only from now on...

Hope you're all well

I just started out doing weights again.6 yrs ago I was a certified personal trainer until I got dx'ed with Fibromyalgia and between the pain and the meds I gained like 50 lbs in 1 yr

The really sad part is when I show people my picture from 6 yrs ago they think it was taken 20 yrs ago

Now I know I can't lift like I used too - I was aggressively working out and basicly following a bodybuilding diet - tuna, oatmeal, eggs etc but I am going to do what I can. to get back in shape

I am even thinking of getting recertified

Today I did

Barbell curls 3 sets of 10
tricep kickbacks 3 sets of 10
one armed rows 3 sets of 10
barbell squats 3 sets of 10
plie squats 3 sets of 10

I started out low with 15 lb weights

I also did ab curls on my exercise ball 3 sets of 15

It's a start!

Hugs!

Rhonda

Glad to see a fresh new thread started

Today has been bacon day for me. I cooked up a few pounds last night to capture the grease for use later in other meals. So my meals today have been:

B: Bacon
L: Bacon
S: Bacon !
D: something that is not bacon

Finally re-entered ketosis this morning which is the good news. So it was the typical 48-72 hours from when I get back from an overseas trip. Bad news, is I leave for Japan in a couple of days. So time to milk this ketosis session for all its worth

Well, what the heck. I might as well join this thread too. Been lurking about a bit, and posted on a few threads but it's time I joined the party.

Started low carbing about 4 weeks ago. Man, was that HELL!! Went VLC about a week and a half ago. Only lost about 4 pounds so far. But man, has my body changed!! My swollen gut is gone! And I have TONS of jiggly fat now!! LOL!

BUT for some strange reason, I gained it all back overnight. LOL! Probably water weight. Think I ate too much protein and salt last night. Had bratwurst and sauerkraut (roughly 6 grams of carbs in 1 link and .5 cup of kraut). Also didn't take my Metformin until last night to see if it would make my fasting BG go down. Usually took it first thing in the morning. Also drank some Propel fitness water late last night and this morning. Think that impacted my weight gain as well. Luckily, my sugar hasn't gone up from it though. Been staying pretty steady. Not great, been between 95-120. But far better than it has been! Also still in ketosis. Not turning it dark purple, but it's been moderate.

Diet has been
Breakfast:
2 eggs, fried or scrambled (sometimes with cheese, OR zucchini, onions, and a sprinkle of parmesan)
2 pork sausage patties
6oz coffee with 2tbs HWC and a few drops of Torani's SF vanilla or hazelnut syrup

Lunch:
6oz ground beef patty w/ slice Kraft Deluxe Am cheese
2Tbs Mayo

OR

My own lo carb cream of mushroom soup
3/4 cup beef broth
2 med chopped mushrooms
2oz HWC

OR low carb egg drop soup
1 cup chicken broth
1 small chopped scallion
1 egg

Dinner:
4oz steak or ground beef patty
6 or 7 asparagus spears or 1/2 cup broccoli
1tbs butter

Snack:
2oz HWC whipped with 1tbs cocoa powder and 1 tbs Torani's vanilla or hazlenut SF syrup

I usually enter all this info in my ****** account. Calories have been anywhere from 1300-1600/day. I'm usually getting roughly 80%fat, 15% protein, and 5% carbs. I saw somewhere about limiting my protein to just what I need to maintain my current muscle mass as excess protein can cause a sugar spike in me. So I figured it to be about 81 grams of protein a day. Not eating any PUFA, mainly cooking with unsalted butter.

Thinking about limiting my caffeine. Didn't have my coffee this morning. Think I really need to get my water intake back up!! But I'm also really working hard at keeping my sugar down! I feel so much better since that has gotten close to normal!! But I'm wanting to see it down into the 90's!! But I probably won't be able to see that until I can get some more exercise going. I'm a freelance artist and I have some heavy duty deadlines right now so I've been chained to my drawing desk. LOL!

Nice to see everybody here! So much support and a wealth info here!!

Yeah I find if I have too much salt (sodium), I'll retain water bad. Which for me usually comes from sausages or spicy sauces (they really have lots of sodium).

Coffee is something you need to experiment with as it affects some folks and not others. I can drink tons of it and not suffer for it. Others will stall hard on it. Same with artificial sweeteners. I stall badly with aspartame.

Anyway ... glad to see you here!

Hello everyone!

I'm just checking in...I love this VLC way of life...

For breakfast I had coffee, vitamins, CO
Lunch I had Crackerbarrel's spicy grilled catfish and 3 bites of green beans
Dinner i had a porterhouse steak

I've been stuck at 165 since last Tuesday...I'm hoping to see a loss in the morning!

My life is so much sweeter since I gave up carbs!

Thanks for the warm welcome!!

Tonight, I had shrimp in lemon butter, and asparagus. So good!!

I'm finding that I do well enough with the SF syrups. Actually, any of the liquid versions of the sweeteners. As long as I stay away from maltodextrin and any of the granular versions of sweeteners, I'm ok. Just can't go overboard and have too much!

Every once in a while, I'll have a couple chunks of cantaloupe. We're getting some really good ones now in Florida!!

Sodium! You know I never had any issues with it until just recently? LOL! NEVER! I was always getting TOO LITTLE!! Oh well. It will all flush out.

I just feel better that my blood sugar is closer to normal range, and that I'm still in at least moderate ketosis. I'm sure the weight will come right back off. I'm going to have a superbusy weekend. I'll probably lose the extra weight and then some.

nuts?

I love nuts.

Ever since I read about the nurses study which associated the nurses who ate nuts with better health, I have eaten them without guilt.

I realize they are highly caloric but they seem to have a good ratio of fat to protein. I could and would give them up if someone could give a good reason.
I'm not worried about the calories. I eat about 1700-1800 calories per day and lose weight.

Nuts are about the only non animal food I eat except for coconut oil and apple cider vinegar.

Someone, please give me the lowdown on nuts.

CalRon, I eat pecans, almonds, and sometimes macadamians. I chose these to try to have the least amount of polyunsaturated fat and the most saturated fat, and because I like them. I eat one or two tablespoons of nuts or nut butter each day, usually.

Kristie, welcome. Ask away! There is not a set rule for eating very low carb. That's one of the things I like about this thread. "Non-specific" includes all of us.

I eat eat beef, beef or chicken liver, tuna, salmon, egg yolks, low starch vegetables, and a little bit of heavy cream, and as Ron does, nuts. Almond butter or yoghurt I make from heavy whipping cream and gelatin are my treat foods.

The best advice, in my opinion, is the "Get Started" page, at Dr. Kurt Harris' blog, PaNu. I also used the search engine here at LCF, and looked for posts by Looweewoo and Leo41, as their posts have helped me a great deal.

I eat circa ten carbs per day. Others here eat may eat a few more, and some try to not eat carbs at all. Meat has a few carbs in it, so do eggs. There isn't really a zero carb diet, but the meat-only or meat/egg-only diet is often referred to that way. There are several definitions floating around.

I often have a beef burger for breakfast, perhaps with a couple of slices of tomato, or raw okra. I drink tea, sometimes with a few drops of heavy whipping cream in it, sometimes black. (Though I like eggs and beef bacon, too. ).

Midday, I eat meat of some kind, and a low starch veg. Usually less than 1/2 c. of veg. Sometimes I mix tuna or salmon with egg yolks and fry them in beef fat. If I don't have any beef fat, I use butter or clarified butter (sometimes called ghee). Sometimes, I use purified water and make it all into a soup with an egg yolk mixed in. I especially like meat/bone broths. Usually, also eat 2 Tablespoons of homemade yoghurt, either plain or with almond meal mixed in.

Supper: meat, a tiny bit of veg., either a bit of HWC-gelatin yoghurt or almond butter.

Extras: sometimes I make mascarpone cheese from heavy whipping cream and fresh lemon juice. Fresh lemon juice in water, either hot or room temperature is a nice drink. This summer, I ate some berries (after phasing out sweeter fruits). I drink meat/bone broths sometimes.

I drink at least one gallon of purified water throughout the day.

Some folks eat once a day, some twice, some thrice, some four times, either at set times or not at set times, or they eat any time.

Hope that's enough to start with. Please do ask whatever you'd like to, if something would help.

All the best to you.

First if all welcome!

As mentioned above, there really aren't any hard rules or definitions. This seems to be mostly folks that just naturally drift to lower and lower carbs as they find it makes them feel better. At least that was my case. Most folks here (but not all by any stretch) are in the <20 net carbs a day with many less than 10.

Also, this diet helps a lot of us never feel hungry as the protein and fat naturally suppresses the hunger you feel.

My diet is mainly meat, eggs, a little bit of cheese. I never really have liked veggies (a guy thing I guess). Most veggies I get are a very small amount in the homemade tomato salsa I make to spice things up a bit.

My advise is to not fear fat content. You really need it for energy otherwise you will be tired and even dizzy if you keep it low too. So I snack on a very small amount of meat (with fat in it) during the day to keep my energy level high.
