Calorie Restriction

Does anyone else follow the CR method? Its supposed to be an anti-aging method to prolong life.

I am in my 40's and have started doing this since over a year ago.

I'm not so sure this is exactly a good way to go yet, not for me anyhow. But it has definitely kept me down to the size that I feel the best and since hitting perimenopause its really helped to keep the little excess of the middle.

I've been reading up on it....find it fascinating.... The one I read about varied caloric intake...one day 500 calories, next day regular eating....and cycled like that....

I haven't followed anything like that plan. I think 500 calories would be awfully hard to do. I stay around 1,000 a day, give or take a little and then on weekends I allow myself whatever I want. Seems to be working good just not sure if its the healthiest way to go.
Sometimes I get a little off track and it goes into 3 days of having a treat but I try and control that.

Yes that would be hard for me on a consistent basis.... I think I prefer the other plan because I occasionally do intermittent fasting and I could fast on the 500 calorie day....and eat one meal....one very small meal lol....

I have been doing this for about 3 weeks and have lost 4.5 pounds but have been taking in about 1200 calories on average. I started at 162.5 and am now 158 wanting to get back down to about 145. I never thought I could do this but I had been doing LC for years and just was sick of it, also staying very tired. I feel great on this. I log everything in to Fitday and that helps tremendously! I am also in my 40s and was finding it much harder to lose than it used to be.

Hey I am in my 40's too and it is difficult... Are you doing the 1200 calories every day or varying it.... Thinking about doing the 500 one day and regular the next....may start tomorrow and see how it goes... May just do IF on my run days and regular eating the next so I have enough energy to do my runs... Congrats sounds interesting...

Yay for you! Some days it might be 900 cal. and then other days it might be 1200-1300. I don't have any set pattern or routine just that I try to keep it somewhere around 1,000. Some days its harder to do than others.

I started this thing in March 07'. I had gained a little more than I like and especially around the middle so I decided to just start portion control. Never have done portion control in my life until then. Except for the time of being anorexic I've always ate large portions. Actually I grew up at home eating that way, we all were pigs!
So, when I started the portion control my jeans were pretty snug and now after doing this for over a year I'm back down to 5/6 jeans. The portion control is not bad after you get in the habit of it. Its amazing just how bigger the portion size I used to eat compared to now and now the smaller portions seem like a lot and don't know how I could have ever that much before!
Although, I've gotten just a little more out of control with my allowed treat days. Before long, my 1 treat day turned into 2 and then to 3 treat days. On the treat days I mainly treat myself with any kind of sweets and sometimes go overboard with it.

I vary it though not really on purpose and don't go down that low, maybe 1000 at times but that's more the exception.

Yep, I know just what you mean! It's SO easy to let it get out of hand! I lost 35 pounds on Atkins a few years back and gradually put a lot back on. I never felt really good on LC either, not much energy like some people. I got pneumonia a couple of months ago and decided to just start eating healthier period. I am amazed how it led to this! It's finally coming off slowly but surely!

I did the Atkins thing a couple years ago and liked it at first because of getting to eat eggs/bacon/sausage,etc. but after a short while on it I did lose some weight but was miserable because I got so sick of having to turn to cheese as a snack and was hard to stick to not eating any kind of high fiber or veggies/salad. I felt as though it was mainly water weight I lost. I blew that off and what I've been doing so far is working pretty well, I just get off track here and there, hormone problems don't help!
I stay away from any potato's, bread or pasta except for my treat days, then I allow myself whatever. I find that if I stay away from these things mostly I can tell a big difference in the weight.
Sweets have always been a very big weakness for me, ever since I was a kid. I've always gone to something sweet with any kind of emotion.

Hey Kim.... I agree with you on Atkins, the first time I followed it after the birth of my dd, I never read the book, I simply did what a cousin suggested, meat and veggies and lost weight well. This time I tried to do what they said on the boards, adding fat and all that and I think it was too much for my hormonal body, and also for the meds I am on...as well as too many calories. I don't think my body metabolizes the fat well anymore...

Sweets are also my weakness but I have kept them pretty well checked on lower carb plans...but I need my good carbs for energy and so I can think clearly....IMHO

Isn't that just the Best feeling when you see you have gone down a few pounds! When I went to the gynec. for my 1 year appt. she said I was 7 lbs. lighter than the previous year and I was elated. So, I lost 7 lbs. from being on this calorie restriction/portion control.

Last night I had the most incredible urge to go get a big bowl of cookies'n'cream ice cream complete with choc. syrup and nuts!! BUT, I stopped and reminded myself of the feelings I would have the next day about it and asked myself if it really was worth it. I decided, as hard as it was, to refrain from it. The ice cream was really calling my name but I chose to refuse to listen and so this morning I was so happy that I did that. Thing is once I do this enough days in a row then it becomes so much easier to walk away from.

Hi, Kimmiekoko,

This article is from the New York Magazine. The author of the story "

That is the same article I actually read not too long ago when I was researching on calorie restriction. It was interesting to read.

Thanks! It has REALLY helped me. I heard the other day that people that keep their foods and calories down (as in a journal like fitday) lose more and keep it off longer than people who don't.
