Typically, I fast for short duration... 36 to 60 hours or 5 days. Sometimes, I will for a longer duration of 10 days. My longest fast was 19 days a few summers ago, in which I was feeling great but leaving for a vacation that included lots of hiking and driving across the country. I broke it due to the unknown, and I've always been intrigued about going much longer.

Currently, I am fasting on day 5.

There is a fasting thread, however very little activity. I am trying to find the right place to post and share fasting experiences, because we all know the challenges. Not sure if mine fits in here or not?
Most of us here follow Bert Herring's Fast-5, but you are welcome to post here no matter what your fasting choice! Good to see ya over here Hoops!

Sometimes I add in Dr Johnsons UpDayDownDay fast as well and find it easy to do.

Nothing makes me lose weight very fast at all--I stall a lot even while eating totally on plan and not cheating--but I dont care. I AM losing fat--can get into clothes a size smaller even with a weight loss of only a pound or two. (Am at 170.9 this AM) I have recently added a small exercise component as well and love the wall push-ups. But I have never lost weight in the past very fast at all if I didnt exercise so know that the lack of it slows me down.

For me, the health benefits of fasting are even more important than the weight loss so I just keep at it and am not going to give up.

I have been lurking on the IF threads now for several weeks "getting to know the posters here" and feel like I am visiting with good friends when I come here for my daily inspiration.
Welcome! Make yourself at home!

Glad you are loving the wall push-ups. I know if I keep doing them, I'm going to look in the mirror one day and be amazed!

What's the best diet....for you?

Got this in an email. Thought I would share:

The best diet for you is the one that is the least disturbing to you.

The more a diet goes against what you like, how you live, the more probable it is that you won't be able to stick to it.

Here are 3 good guidelines to choosing a diet:

- It must fit in with your individual health needs
- It must fit into your life without having to force it
- It must not seem too restrictive to you

In the case of dieting, with pain will surely come gain. The more pain a diet causes you, the more likely it is to fail, and you will either gain back any weight you do lose, or you will end up sticking with the weight you had already gained.

RD24, you look so elegant--I am inspired by your determination to make and maintain goal just as much as I am by your results...even when the going was slow (Even while fighting off the gremlins of house problems. )

Thanks, Missalissa, these are really a great jumpstart for the struggling IF'er. Oddly enough, even tho many "outsiders" think fasting is hard, it isnt painful or unpleasant for me and fits in fine with the way we live in our house right now (greatly because I have a very flexible and understanding DH)

And below is another quote also very inspiring and encouraging from a wonderful leader of the JUDDD group at traineo. Her name is Beth N and this is what she wrote--it is engraved on my heart.

"
Just because . . .

. . . you see something tasty, it doesn't mean you have to eat it.

. . . it's a down day, it doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself.

. . . you gained a pound, it doesn't mean you should give up.

. . . you're in a bad mood, it doesn't mean breaking your diet will make it better.

. . . others are making poor choices, it doesn't mean you have to go along.

. . . you didn't lose weight this week, it doesn't mean you've failed.

. . . you're trying, it *does* mean you are a winner!"

Isnt that a great list of reasons to keep on keepin' on?! I often think as I hang out here and read what others have written that it is the internet which has made it possible for us to "meet together" and cheer each other on when things get tough and we feel discouraged. Equally, what a joyful place to share a triumph.

WE are the modern day electronic version of an AA group or WeightWatchers...and I have often heard it said that the success of both AA and WW comes greatly from group support where people can bare their souls without being judged and can be uplifted by the others who surround them. I always feel surrounded by that spirit when I come to these forums and especially here at IF.

Rachel, I have loved reading of your summer plans, your new and helpful friend Mark and his help in constructing your new treasures from Ikea, and how you miss your DD even though you know she is having a lovely summer.

And as I read your report of having an auto accident, my heart went out to you in a very special way. On Easter Day, some fool picking a sandwich up off the floor of his truck, rammed into the back of my wonderful 12 year old Aerostar van. I was not physically hurt, but the emotional and psychological damage to me was horrible. I went into a deep depression and it took weeks to recover from it. I am an optimist and not easily brought to tears, but I was tearful pretty often then, while trying to get over the shock of losing my beloved car and the idea that I could be driving along minding my own business, doing everything just right and still be hit. (Sometimes, it is still hard for me to trust other drivers to do the right thing.)

Be patient with yourself--emotional shock can really do a job on your outlook and it takes time to recover and feel secure again. But as time goes on, a lot of natural healing of your spirit will take place and the bad memories will fade and you will be your old, confidant self again.

And try to concentrate on the great new directions your life is taking lately in every other way.

That's great! Thanks for posting it! I'm going to print it out and put in on my mirror!

I don't find fasting hard at all either. Seemed absolutely natural when I started.

I sooooooo love the support of these boards, but especially this thread. I have come to love everyone here and would move heaven and earth to help the ones here that I consider a priviledge to call friends.

maizenbluebabe Thank you so much for your very kind comments. I have had some moments of "back-sliding" & need to keep reminding myself that I will be able to maintain & or release a few more lbs as long as I keep on keepin on. Without the support of the wonderful folks on this thread it would be very easy for me to allow my thoughts to slip back into thinking that I can eat/drink whatever I want without any consequences.
Two other times I've made it to a "normal" weight only to "slip" back into old unhealthy eating patterns BUT this time I'm going to make it for good

Thanks also for posting the inspiring words of BethN.

Missalissa Thanks for posting the email about "the best diet for you". It makes a lot of sense to me. That's why I think LC/IF is a good fit for me since I don't have to force it or eat foods that I don't love.

Well said Maizenbluebabe, I totally agree with you
I attended WW & even became a Leader 15 years ago & loved the support. What I didn't care for was the lack of stressing how important good fats & nutrition are. The emphasis was on what "carbage" a person could get "away" with eating & still take off the lbs.

Hi back atacha and I love your attitude about never giving up, and it's one that our thread members seem to employ daily. Yes, I would have to agree; we've all become good friends and care for each other very much!

As usual, very good advice, and I couldn't be happier with the way this WOE Atkins/IF fits into my lifestyle rather than me fitting into it.

Well... I don't even know how to tell this story. I slept wrong last night, so my neck hurt today. So, I took some Advil and laid on the couch for a bit. Kids and I played w/ balloons for a while, then son went upstairs. Next thing I know something hits my face. Hurts like heck. I see blood, run to the restroom. Turns out that son has thrown a Barbie at me from upstairs. She was also broken & headless - neck was cracked and I think that's what hit my face. At first I thought it went all the way through. But, it's just a surface cut on my face and a split lip. I think it will be ok, but it's very swollen and ugly-looking.
I can't believe I got cut by a Barbie. I cut all the hair off a Barbie when I was younger. Do you think this is some sort of perverse Karma for that? ROFL
I will definitely have a scar. It looks like a comma. I will keep an eye on it closely.
Good news is that w/ 1/2 my top lip swollen it gonna be hard to eat. lol
Hope y'all are having a better day than I am.

Oh, Melissa what a freaky accident!

If you have any Vitamin E capsules around, you may want to split one open and apply that to the affected area. Vit. E has saved me from many scars in the past, cause being a gardener has its hazards. Keep applying the E until the wound is closed entirely.
Hope you feel better soon.

Ok, did my 90 wall push ups for the day, and still feeling a bit lethargic, but I believe it's the humidity......even though I'm inside, when it's hot, it's hot........

Thanks for the welcome.

Gracie~ Thanks! I made my son go outside again today when I weighed in on the weigh. He told me not to lock him out.

Ragdoll~ Thanks! I know your name was posted earlier when I skimmed through. Is it Debbie?

Maizenbluebabe~ I am new, too! Nice post!

Lissa~ Thanks! That is a great post… the best plan is one we can incorporate in our lifestyle. Unfortunately, my lifestyle is too indulging. I need to change that and figure out something.

good morning all! nice to see ya here Hoops and glad to see you maizenbluebabe- some good words of advice that you shared- thank you!

to u Rach- hope all is ok. I know what those minor upsets can do to a person. I think you know, that you have the support of all of us here.

Wow Melissa0 freaky accident. AND MY NO! I DO NOT ACCEPT DOLL KARMA! I use to cut my doll's hair off when I was a kid because i wanted boy dolls lol! Hope your healing is speedily.

DESPITE all else going on seemingly- I have stuck to eating what I could call sensibly and the scale is going downward finally! Of course I KNOW what it is from! I threatened to throw it away! It is in a mode of self-preservation!

I have also been reading Dr. Oz book-YOU ON A DIET. It tells me alot about belly fat. I have not dealt well with stress my whole life- "they" figure that my having POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER goes back to when the original abuse started, which was actually 5 months old. I was NEVER taught per se by anyone when I was a kid how to deal with life. The good ol' family doc *choke* started me on tranquilizers at age 5, because I was already having physiological responses to being unable to cope with stress; headaches, stomach aches and hives. So whenever I would "stress" they would "DOSE ME". Isn't that HORRIBLE?!??!?!

So ANYHOW= all of this what Dr. Oz is saying about the OMENTUM and stress makes that proverbial light bulb come on! Will share more later gals! Hugs to all!

MelissaF. Ouch on your lip. Hope the swelling is down today. I once fell off a bike & split my upper & lower lips. Without thinking I had tomatoes to eat & did that ever sting my lips, LOL! Speaking of doll karma, I once tried to feed a doll that wasn't meant to be fed. I then had a doll missing her top teeth & now I'm having trouble with the upper caps in my mouth.

In the cold light of day I look a little better. It's starting to look like a beauty mark because the swelling has gone down a good bit. The cut looks very much like 1/2 a heart. lol. The weirdest thing was that just the day before I was reminiscing about when I was a kid and I hit a table and put my lower teeth through my lip. I've also got scars from hitting the side of a pool w/ my chin. So, now I've got a new one to add to the goatee collection of scars. rofl

Today my schedule will be farily busy, and I'm ready for it.

Our new shopping center is having its Grand Opening this Saturday, but some stores are opening little by little before then. We needed them so badly, as Wal-Mart was hogging all of the business, now Super Target, Ross and Kohl's are going to be giving them some competition....our community is very happy about this!

S/Target is already opened, so I'm headed over there in a bit, then I have my quarterly appointment with my homeopath this afternoon, so I'll have a productive day.

I'll be back later to see how you're all doing!

Ciao~~
