I shouldve asked my question here rather than create a new thread...

I just learned from a naturopathic doctor...not to eat too many RAW nuts. Almonds, in particular, contain cyanide. Yes, Cyanide he informed me. Too many raw are not great for you. You can roast them yourself at 325 degrees for about 10-12 minutes. I read in an article that if you don't want the higher temp, you can roast them for about 20 min at only 175. The later temp seems to agree more with raw food enthusiasts as the lower temp doesn't destroy the things they want from eating them raw as much, but yet will still neutralize the cyanide in the nuts. I can't remember where I read about the lower temp roasting....it was from an organic site.....you might google it. Nuts are very nutritious.....just wanted to share what I learned about the raw nuts. Always check it out for yourself, but I just wanted to share. Blessings.

Im on the last handful of raw (whole natural) almonds that i bought. Ill be ready to go out and buy more...

hmmm

what really makes them "raw"?

its not like i'm picking 'em off the tree myself.
I actually have the bag here with me, it has no description of the process used.

Unfortunately, the FDA has been trying to make raw almonds pasteurized-which would mean they wouldn't be considered raw anymore-even though the can might still say raw or natural. I don't know if they've done that just yet or not.

I never heard about the cyanide thing. Perhaps-that's why it's recommended to actually soak raw almonds for two days before you eat them. Also, the digestive enzymes sprout when you soak them for two days as well...and of course, it's easier to digest raw nuts if they've been soaked. But who wants to wait two days to eat nuts??

Peppermint and licorice tea helps the "dairy" bloat.

Would you mind posting a menu? I would love to go raw if my tum would handle it. I think I'd like a dehydrator though to make bread & such.

Back after a L-O-N-G time! New WOE

Hello all! i am sure after some reading i will recognize some of you from years ago. i am still on my journey. i had some re-gain, did nothing for almost 2 years, then decided 2 years ago to go vegetarian... just overate! mmmm beans, hummus! but the calories still added up!

now i know what to do, how to do it and i am doing it. i finally broke 200 for the first time in at least 16 years. i exercise 6 days- 5 cardio, 2 of them weights, one is exercise for 'fun'. no goal. no heart rate monitor (this is HARD not to strap on!), just tennis for fun with kid, etc.

and i have lost about 68 lbs since the beginning.

i will stick around, as i would love your support with the last 36 or so lbs i have to go.

and i would love to hear/read your stories...

oh yeah... anyone drink KOMBUCHA? this is all i drink other than water, ever. i will have one all morning, and then if i have an upset stomach. got really intuned with my innards. know when i need to fast for a morning, and take it easy. this is great stuff. i buy it by the case. this and krill oil. esterC, krill, kombucha, CLA and one more i am forgetting... and that's my vitamin/supps plan. yours??????

take care and see you around.

What's KOMBUCHA?
I went veg in May08. I love trying new things and new recipes. I've had a bit of chicken and egg in the last month, but I don't see it a slipping, it's just part of the journey into veg. I'd like to be vegan but don't think I have what it takes to check everything in everything. Like some people will get upset if they have to take a pill where the capsule is gelatin. I'm notjudging, that's just not me. I feel best when I'm NO lacto or ovo... but having a bit of a challege with my cals so low at present. I take probiotics and B12. I really like liquid cal-mag but with gasoline & groc it's too expensive.

I do mostly mixed salads with sprouts and fruit mixed in for the time being, for lunch and dinners. Green smoothies for breakfast. I have to get making some gourmet meals and deserts, once I get more familiar with this WOE.

I need to purchase some products online and once I do that, I will be on my way to making my gourmet meals.

I got a dehydrator so that should be interesting.

Hi Everybody, Is it okay if I join you? I've been a vegetarian for some time now but as we all know, being vegetarian doesn't mean you will lose weight, ESPECIALLY if you depend a lot on pre-packaged stuff (my HUGE downfall!!) ......... I started off at 257#, went on a low fat diet, got down to 160#, stopped paying attention, put weight back on, tried crazy diets, went up and down and up and down, am up to 198# and am NOT gonna go ANY higher!!! I ordered the book "The Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet: The Fast, No-Hunger Weightloss Diet for Vegetarians"
by Rose Elliot .......... I've heard good things about it, anyone have it, have read it or tried it or ?????..........Anyway, looking forward to going the right direction once again.
Thanks.
Barb

kombucha is a raw mushroom tea that has wonderful properties for healing and so much more... it's my tonic, magic potion... if i get an upset stomach, one bottle does the trick- sipping throughout the morning... it's fermented. so it is MY soda. all else is water and smoothies...

give it a try. any health food store has it. oh, and it IS fermented, so if you are a light weight non-drinker- it may give you a buzz for a few minutes if you guzzle it.

tastes a little like vinegar with flavor. it smells like feet- but it is GREAT! the pear in the small brown bottle is my fave. i drink 1/2 bottle a day usually.

oh, yeah... b12, too! and probiotics... when i am feeling rich, i take digestive enzymes... ain't been feelin rich lately! maybe in the next month!!!!!

been LOVING spinach salads lately, did i already say that??? oh man, can't get enough!!!

Not yet... on a liquid diet currently. When I can transition to food I'll see what I can eat. Raw sounds great though.

I love being raw and it gives me such a feeling of freedom without keeping track of my calories.

I'm thinking of doing a juice feast in the next couple of weeks. I want to order the book first and then dive into it. I hear many success stories from fasting, so I would love to detox my body if I can.

Hi Kind. I'm going to incorporate more raw plant foods into my diet. You're suppose to do it slowly to avoid heavy detox symptoms, but I already have a raw breakfast everyday, so now I'm going to lunch or dinner. Take care,
