Good morning everyone,
I am still awaiting for Dr. Fuhrman's book and can't wait to receive it and dig in for some great reading. Maggy: I see you have received it and are enjoying it very much. Is the cooking DVD worth purchasing? wendysmiling: Your food pictures look so delish. ![]() I hope we can make this board active. I so would love to come to here and share my ideas and got ideas from everyone else. Have a wonderful day. |

That looks yummy, Wendy. I'm going to try that dressing.
![]() I've actually lost a couple of pounds. I'm so surprised. I thought I would be at 135 forever. I'm okay with losing a little more, but I'm in a place where I'm not going to force it. Last night, I had a smoothie made from almond milk, soy protein powder (will switch when it's out), frozen bananas, and frozen strawberries. I had plenty left over for breakfast this morning. At work today, I have a bag of carrots, three oranges, and a potato to stick in the microwave for lunch. |

Wendy, you should be a food photographer...I'm droolingD
I just had carrot chips with red pepper hummus for lunch and am making a huge salad for dinner. I have plenty of fruit for a snack in between. Moretta, I actually haven't recieved the book yet, but I bought 2 DVD's. Eat to Live DVD is a recording of him giving a public presentation of his "diet" followed by Q&A's from the audience and some success stories at the end. I bought that and his cooking DVD and watched both. The cooking DVD is good, but so different from the way I cook, but of course, that is the purpose of it. He doesn't waste time on showing how to make a salad, but he emphasizes on dressings, soups (which I found good because the base is veggie based also) and especially the frozen sorbets )...so yes, I am glad I recieved them although he gives the recipes in his book...I'm just not a patient person to wait for the book, plus I also like visuals to help things sink in![]() Rachael, congrats on the weight loss and that smoothie sounds awesome. I am waiting to make the banana ice cream using frozen bananas, soy milk(I"ll use almond breeze) and he adds dates but I'll add some walnuts. Just need for my bananas to ripen a bit more before I freeze them.Glad to see this thread is still going Last edited by Maggy : 07-29-2008 at 11:55 AM. |

Maggy, I think your daughter is a good influence. I wish I could be vegan.. but there is no way in h*ll I can give up my cheese! I just can't! so what is for dinner tonight everyone?

I thought you all needed this!
My mother gave me an old cookbook of her's. It's titled "Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone".
It's the best cookbook for veggies I have ever seen. It is also the largest cookbook I have ever seen! about 2 1/2 inches thick! I have LOVED everything we have ever had out of this.. and it's got lots of mom's notes here and there and additional recipes in the front and back, written on the blank pages, or bits of space. I made artichoke and caramel onion pasta with parm the other day and it was fantastic! Also just made the eggplant parm. Tonight I made Hummus. Now I have made Hummus for years all different types. This is the best I have ever had. It's got more spices and packs a real bite.. Here is the recipe for you: "Spicy Hummus" 1 t cumin seeds 1/2 t coriander seeds 1/2 t fennel seeds 1-2 (I used 4) cloves garlic minced sea salt 2 T Tahini 1/4 t cayenne (I know I used more) 2 cans organic chic peas (recipe calls for 1 1/2C fresh cooked though) 1-2 T Olive oil (omitted this time and added lime juice) Juice of 1 lemon splashes of water to consistency. toast spices in a dry pan. I then used a mortal and pestle and ground by hand.. throw everything in your food processor and add more lime, lemon and/or water as you whir, to consistency you like.. I like it thick.. It takes a while even in a high power food processor. toasting the spices is key I think.. as is the addition of lime juice.. I didn't add the olive oil because I am watching calories and cutting where I can. If you like hummus.. try this! Yummmmm |

daisyHair: That cookbook sounds fantastic and lucky you for all the great recipes your mom passed onto you. Maggy: I'm like you. I'm not very patient myself. So I am anxiously awaiting Dr. F's book and I hope it arrives soon. I really want to get started on this new WOE. |

Dr. McDougall says no to coffee, but it is vegan. I drink it and don't plan to give it up. I did give up diet sodas at the end of May and don't use any artificial sweeteners.

McDougall says coffee raises blood pressure, cholestrol and can be attributed to heart disease. He also says it can cause gastro-intestinal upset in some people.

Well that's one thing I disagree with Dr. McDougall about. While caffinated coffee may give some people the jitters and make them eat more or even cause them a little more stress, countless studies have shown that both caffinated and decaf are pretty harmless and may even have some health benefits. (see Jessi's posts on YOU on a Diet) here on the Other Plans part of LCF. I do agree that for some people the acids in coffee may upset their stomach, but only if they drink a LOT. I only drink one or two cups a day. Dr. McDougall says that imitation coffee made out of grains is OK. There used to be a product called Postum, but it was discontinued earlier this year. I tried a product called Roma while I was doing McDougall and I liked it, but I had to drive to a health food store on the other side of my large city to get it and it was about $4.00 more than the same size jar of regular coffee. I saw no difference in my health when I used it either.

I disagree with him as well. I have tried all the coffee substitutes, and they are expensive and nowhere as good (to me) as real coffee. If I'm going to have a "vice," I think coffee is an OK one to have. Especially since I don't load it up with other stuff like heavy cream and artificial sweeteners.

People who eat vegetarian or vegan solely for health reasons are only against eating meat and animal products because of the high fat and cholesterol. It is really the exact opposite of low carb. Dr. McDougall's plan makes grains and starchy vegetables like potatoes, squash and beans the main part of the diet. His weight loss plan is called The McDougall Maximum Weight Loss plan. You can google Dr. John McDougall to find out more. Dr. Fuhrman makes non-starchy vegetables and fruit the mainstay of his diet. It is called EAT to LIVE. While he doesn't forbid grains and starchy vegetables, he doesn't emphsize them like McDougall does. Dr. Fuhrman also believe that a good portion of the veggies you eat should be raw. He also believes in fasting. You can google Dr. Joel Fuhrman to find out more about his plan. You can also go to vegsource.com and fatfreevegan.com to get more info about vegetarina and/or vegan eating. Last edited by fluffybear2 : 07-31-2008 at 06:31 PM. |

One of my favorite "Eat to Live" recipes
Date-Nut Pop-em's
(About 100 calories for 3 pop-em's) 2 ounces ground raw sunflower seeds 3 ounces ground raw blanched almonds 8 ounce of ground raw cashews 3 ounce of ground walnuts 1 tablespoons of ground flax seeds 10 ounces of soft pitted dates The mix is 3 parts nuts/seeds to 2 parts dates. For Cinnamon Flavor - Add one tablespoon of raw carob powder and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon to the mix. Combine raw ingredients in food processor until completely ground & mixed together. Form into bite size balls. **p.s. I am not technically following a plant-based diet myself. I am doing a Mediterranean diet, which is heavy on veggies, fruits and nuts. So this recipe fits into my eating plan very nicely. Last edited by fluffybear2 : 07-31-2008 at 06:57 PM. |

fluffybear2: Thanks for the information. I am awaiting for the Eat to Live book by Dr. F. which I ordered about a week ago. As to Dr. McDougall, I have been reading through his forum and came across his MWL plan. I printed it out. I am thinking of ordering his book as well.
Which plans have you done fluffybear2. I believe you have done McDougall's as you mention it in a one of the posts I read somewhere here on LCF. Have you done Dr. Fuhrman's plan? I also ordered a Mediterranean book and awaiting for that to. As you can see, I will be busy reading these books once they arrive, and will make a decision based upon the information I gather from these books on which WOE I will be going with. Have you had any weight loss with the Mediterranean so far? Do you feel satiated after a meal? I also like this plan as it has flexibility in it as to some meats to a vegetarian from what I can gather. |
