How is everyone?

I am doing fine.
My parents left Thursday morning, so the boys and I are back a fairly regular routine.

I went to dinner with a friend last night.
We went to a Thai restaurant.

While I usually choose to eat lower carbs foods, last night I didn't.
She and I shared a shrimp spring roll & vegetable tempura appetizer.
(I very rarely eat fried foods).
We also shared an order of Pad Thai.

*We did have our own blue margaritas, though!

Anyway, the meal was awesome.
Most importantly, I enjoyed every bite of food w/o any regrets!
I felt great throughout our meal and afterward.

Then we saw Nights in Rodanthe.
It was nice to be out on a Friday night.

I hope everyone has a great w/e!!!

Hi bee and Rebecca, I've had a pretty busy week--for some reason there are just a million little things to take care of. Guess some of it is getting ready for winter stuff. And I am squeezing in some time with my 12 y.o. grandson this weekend. Eating has been great--satisfying choices that I've been happy with. And the scale seems to be moving downward once again.

bee, I'm sorry to say I never did get that walk in. I did stop in yesterday to visit with my dance instructor who I haven't seen in over a year. I am going to start doing more ballroom dancing once again--it is great exercise and so fun I don't even know I''m exercising

That is so great, Rebecca, and what I love about taking the time to make thoughtful choices and really enjoy what I'm eating. Sounds like you had a really good Friday nite.

Well I am hitting the ground running again today to do some raking in the yard, run errands, and try and sort out what is going on with all this finance crisis and where to move our retirement money--bleah.

Have a good Saturday.

Hi Girls!

Unfortunately, after a year and a half of really trying, I have decided that I cannot (or am incapable of) eating intuitively.

I must get back to a lower-carb woe, in order to maintain a weight I'll feel comfortable at.

That being said, I'll never go back to restricting like I used to.
(That only fueled my bingeing and made me crazy).

I will always allow myself the choice to indulge in non-LC foods, on occasion and w/o guilt.

I'm thinking of starting a journal soon where I might share my journey.

Take good care and I wish you all the absolute best!!!

Hi everyone!

Sounds like you had a very active Saturday sue!!! Did you enjoy yourself? How are you getting on with your IE/IF combination?? Ballroom dancing sounds great! I have decided to join a netball team!!! I love team sports

Rebecca, I hope you are well. Just do what you can and what is right for you. You are always welcome here even just for the chat!!!! Take care!

I've been doing not too bad. I have been trying very hard to just eat when hungry etc. I think i'm conquering the food police, but it is tough stopping eating when full! That is what I need to work on in october - slowing down and taking note of how hungry I feel while eating.

I think you learned a lot from the process of doing IE. I think for each of us it is a matter of combining strategies from here and there that work for us and then drop the ones that no longer serve us.

I hope the very best for you also. I'll see you around the board.

Hi bee, I did have a pretty happy weekend and I'm getting some of my projects checked off one by one. Is netball like volleyball?

I am working on the same issue of stopping when full. I am aware that I am getting full but it seems like it comes up on me so fast, that I'm not quite prepared to stop eating, so I usually slow down and have one or two more bites past being full--it is an improvement in the right direction anyway It is a surprise how fast I get full a lot of times. I think the IF works to shrink my stomach over night and that works for me in a good way to self limit amounts.

Keep hanging in there, we'll get this figured out yet.

Hmmm i would say netball is more like basketball. The difference is when you have the ball you can't move you must pass it. It's really fun!!

Eating has been good today. I wasn't hungry when i got up so I resisted my habit and didn't have breakfast.

Well, bee, it is just you and me in here now. Hopefully others will come along to add their 2 cents

It is great to have a sport you really enjoy. My grandson plays basketball and I bet he would like netball even better, because he doesn't move around the court very fast anyway.

I'm glad to hear you are happy with your eating. I've felt mostly satisfied with my choices, but I want to focus on eating even a bit lighter--I've been pushing my luck with a few extra bites when full and a few tastes of this and that instead of giving myself more time and having water instead--often it is thirst that feels like hunger to me.

I am planning on boosting exercise this week. I took a dance lesson yesterday and I plan on a dance party in Sacramento tonite. I am headed back to my other house in the SF area and I am going to get myself into the gym and hopefully get a bike ride or 2 in with dh. I have been lax on the exercise part while focusing on getting some consistency down with the food, so time to balance that part out...

I forgot, I wanted to also comment on eating breakfast. When I was a teenager and even into my 20's, I naturally didn't eat breakfast and wasn't hungry and didn't miss it. I am just not a breakfast eater for the most part, though now and then I do eat in the mornings if I feel really hungry.

I find my preference is to mostly have an early lunch, a snack, and then early dinner. If I have evening plans for dinner with someone else, I try to move my eating window later, though lately, my body has been resistant to doing that, so I just try and go with the flow and eat during my hungry time of day and that seems to work for me. I am feeling more in control of the food, which is a big thing for me.

Hi there! Yeah i do really love being active and especially getting outside! Although the winter is coming so the weather may mean I can't get out for a nice walk or run as often!

I want to try and eat a little lighter too. I know myself that I am still eating a bit over satisfaction and becomming full. I'm getting better and waiting until I'm hungry to eat. Today I didn't have "breakfast" until 2.15pm. I just wasn't hungry until then. It was the same yesterday too.

I am going to try and drink more water, because like you i think that I'm possibly thirsty instead of hungry sometimes.

I went for a while too when I didn't eat breakfast in the morning. I felt so much better at the time. It's just so hard to break the mould when everyone else thinks it's unhealthy not to have breakfast in the morning. I do some days but now I'm only having it when i'm truly hungry for it.

Found these online and thought they were interesting

The Center for Mindful Eating has created the Principles of Mindful Eating. These principles are intended to guide professionals who are interested in mindful eating. The Principles of Mindful Eating are free to reproduce and distribute for educational purposes.

The Principles are also available as a PDF to download and print. (The Principles of Mindful Eating - PDF 110kb)

Principles of Mindfulness:
• Mindfulness is deliberately paying attention, non-judgmentally.
• Mindfulness encompasses both internal processes and external environments.
• Mindfulness is being aware of what is present for you mentally, emotionally and physically in each moment.
• With practice, mindfulness cultivates the possibility of freeing yourself of reactive, habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and acting.
• Mindfulness promotes balance, choice, wisdom and acceptance of what is.

Mindful Eating is:
• Allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing
opportunities that are available through food preparation and consumption by respecting your own inner wisdom.
• Choosing to eat food that is both pleasing to you and nourishing to your body by using all your senses to explore, savor and taste.
• Acknowledging responses to food (likes, neutral or dislikes) without judgment.
• Learning to be aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decision to begin eating and to stop eating.

Someone Who Eats Mindfully:
• Acknowledges that there is no right or wrong way to eat but varying degrees of awareness surrounding the experience of food.
• Accepts that his/her eating experiences are unique.
• Is an individual who by choice, directs his/her awareness to all aspects of food and eating on a moment-by-moment basis.
• Is an individual who looks at the immediate choices and direct experiences associated with food and eating: not to the distant health outcome of that choice.
• Is aware of and reflects on the effects caused by unmindful eating.
• Experiences insight about how he/she can act to achieve specific health goals as he/she becomes more attuned to the direct experience of eating and feelings of health.
• Becomes aware of the interconnection of earth, living beings, and cultural practices and the impact of his/ her food choices has on those systems.

It is with appreciation and gratitude that we recognize the efforts of the following professionals who have been kind enough to donate their time and wisdom to craft The Principles of Mindful Eating.

I just had my dinner there. I haven't been all that hungry today but i enjoyed my food. I think i may have eaten a few extra bites but i'm not getting too worried about it.

It's a horrible day here, I'm just staying in tonight and probably going to watch tv.

I must say...I have been away from IE for quite awhile...but I am learning that IE is the best thing for me...

I started trying to do the 'eat 5-6x a day' thing...and have noticed it only leaves me more & more hungry...I am never satisfied-no matter how much I eat. This all became a reality to me this past week when all my clothes started getting way too tight. Plus it became another reality when the DH & I sat down, figured out our food bill & realized we were spending over $600 a month on food-for TWO people. To both of us, that was just ridiculous. He was mindlessly munching throughout the day. I was eating every couple of hours. Nonsense. Just nonsense. It was too depressing. And I saw myself getting too obsessive again...over how many calories, carbs, fats, proteins, etc. I was taken in. I tend to have an all or nothing mentality & that is what gets me in trouble all the time-the all or nothing mentality.

I started doing cardio intervals-only 2-3x a week but was very militant in them. And wouldn't you know? That just really messed me up-low blood sugars, light headedness, two knees hurting, spending an hour in the bathroom feeling sick...I just knew that had to stop as well...I had to stop pushing myself so hard...so I stopped...so now I'm back to walking & doing my weights. I loved doing the intervals but not at the expense of how I was feeling...

And now I'm eating when hungry. Stopping when satisfied. (I don't like the feeling of being full) I took the initiative-finally, after really debating-to add in a whole grain one time a week. I wasn't sure how I'd react to it but haven't had the bloating feelings that used to come with eating grains. This was a nice, welcome surprise for me.

The DH & I are both following IE now. It's great to be on the same plan.

Dyan

I found this on the spark people website. I can't remember if I have posted it before.

Have you ever found yourself in front of an open fridge and didn’t know how the heck you got there? Ever looked down and saw your hand in a bag of chips and wondered why? Ever had your lunch break roll around and realized you had absolutely no idea what you were going to eat?

These are all perfect – and common – examples of not eating on purpose. It sounds like a basic habit, but it’s rarely a habit that people truly follow. Not paying attention to your eating, or eating for the wrong reasons, can sabotage momentum, leave you confused, and ruin any progress you’ve made on the scale. The really frustrating part is that you may not even know you’re doing it.

Emotional eating is a problem for a lot of people. Mindless eating may actually be worse. In a poll of SparkPeople.com members, 33% said they eat most often when they’re bored. Only 13% eat most often at the more appropriate time: when they’re hungry.

We’re surrounded by eat-for-tainment options, where eating becomes a leisure activity. Weddings, themed restaurants, dinner theaters, ceremonies, receptions, reunions, parties – wherever there’s food, there’s fun. It’s easy to see why aimless eating is so common – it’s something to do.

It’s time to wake up from being a food zombie. Take control of your eating habits. Here are some tactics you can use to adopt this habit:

Stop skipping meals
A regular eating routine keeps you balanced and helps you digest food more efficiently. Plus it helps eliminate the starve-starve-starve-binge cycle many dieters suffer throughout the day.

Eat only when hungry
Not when you’re bored, sad, nervous, angry, upset or stressed. If you’re at a party with an appetizer buffet, socialize on the other side of the room, so you don’t habitually graze while talking. Listen to your body, not your mind or emotions.

Cut back on late night snacking
Prime time for television is also prime time for calorie-heavy comfort foods. Snacking at night is often another example of eating to relax or as something to do.

Plan for snacks
If you’re going to get the munchies – and you will – you might as well make the best of it. Keep raisins, carrot sticks, granola bars, and other healthy snacks within arms’ reach wherever you are.

Have a purposeful eating environment
This is especially important at home. Choose a regular time and place for your meals. Cut out distractions, take a little extra time preparing and pay attention to your meal. Don’t eat over the counter, while watching TV or while on the phone.

By paying more attention to what and how you’re eating, you’ll not only have more control over what goes in your mouth, but you’ll also notice how often you previously ate and didn’t even realize it. The best part is that you’ll naturally start to make better choices.

Hi Dyan!

It's great to hear from you again.

I completely understand what you are saying. IE can sometimes feel like we are losing control because it's something new. At the start it is exciting but then it begins to get scary. It sometimes feels like there is lack of direction because there are very few rules. We feel like we are not DOING anything to get to be where we want to be. It's too good to be true!!! I'm really trying just now to push past those initial fears and get into an IE groove. I'm by no means perfect at the moment but i'm getting there.

Keep posting and take care!

I read this quote and thought it was quite inspiring, so I'd like to share it with you all.

Another Quote and a thought to keep in mind today

"Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but doesn't get you anywhere. "

Hi Dyan, good to have you back here posting. Trying to fit in small meals all day long was making me crazy and I never felt satisfied, which set up bingeing. I eat now at the peak times of day for me--late morning and early afternoon.

Hi to you too, Rebecca and bee.

bee, I enjoyed the mindful eating info and especially your quote on worrying. I've been doing a lot of that lately even though I've tried to keep a cool head and deal with all the miscellaneous little details of life that seem to have all accumulated and reached critical mass suddenly Congrats on your success with no mindless munching

I have been hungrier than usual the last couple of days--must be hormonal fluctuations. I made up a favorite chicken and butternut squash stew recipe yesterday and all I will say is there are less leftovers than last time I made it but I sure enjoyed it. Dh was even chowing away, refilling his bowl too.

Well, I am off to keep working on my to-do list. Good intuitive eating everyone.
